Don’t forget to add an hour – 25/26 March
MARCH 2017
Welcome to the latest edition of the magazine, I hope you are all still finding it interesting. We would still welcome any new ideas for the magazine, so if you can think of anything that might be of interest to other people do let us know. If you are putting any events on in the village hall, that you wish people to attend, please remember to advertise in this magazine so everyone will know about it. As you may know the Stickney Show Committee is no longer part of the Parish Council. The new Show Committee would welcome new members to help with the organizing the Show, or maybe you could volunteer to help for a couple of hours on the day - they need as much man power as they can get to help the event run well. Welcome to any newcomers to the village, I hope you will soon settle in and be happy in our community. You will find lots of information in here and important phone numbers are at the back.

ST LUKE’S CHURCHAs I write this the weather forecast has suggested snow for the end of the week, and there were a few tiny flakes hitting my windscreen as I set off for the Church Coffee Morning. Hopefully the only patches of white covering the ground will be the snowdrops under my trees as well as in the churchyard and along the Carrington Straight. They have suddenly emerged, clearly visible amongst the debris of autumn and early winter. Beautiful yet delicate they herald the coming of spring flowers and the anticipation of renewal in gardens and countryside. Nature's cycle is something to wonder at and give thanks for.
Enjoy your Shrove Tuesday pancakes and then you are invited to St Luke's on WEDNESDAY 01 MARCH for our Service with Ashing at 11.00am. This will be followed with Soup and Rolls served by older students from the William Lovell Academy. Last year it was great fun and we hope to offer them much support and encouragement.
FRIDAY 03 MARCH 10.30am the service for the Women's World Day of Prayer will be held in Spilsby's New Life Fellowship Church (opposite St. James'). The service has been created by the women of the Philippines. Afterwards we chat together over bring and share refreshments. If anyone would like to attend and needs transport please contact 01205 480661.
WEDNESDAY 08 MARCH in St Luke's at 7.00pm we will be holding the ANNUAL CHURCH MEETING when the activities and accounts of 2016 will be presented. The Church is the oldest village building. We would appreciate your presence and interest.
PRIZE BINGO Saturday 11 March at 7.30pm in Stickney Youth Centre - our first fund-raising event of this year. Yet again we ask for your generosity by donating prizes, and invite you to join us for the evening.
REMINDING AGAIN: The ANNUAL AUCTION for our Cluster of Churches will be on 13 MAY at 2.00pm in Stickney Village Hall.
POSTAGE STAMPS which were collected through 2016 have been passed on to THE LEPROSY MISSION. Thank you for your support. There is a box for postage stamps on your left as you enter St Luke's. We are asked to leave a margin of 5mm when we cut them from envelopes.
FLOOR REPAIRS: At last the work has begun to replace the area which had dry rot at the rear of the Church. It has taken so much time to set things in place for the change to a solid floor. We have to work with our architect and the D.A.C. and usethe correct materials for a listed building. It will be quite exciting to have this area of the Church in use again.
ST. LUKE'S is an OPEN CHURCH, unlocked daily around 9.00am until approximately 4.00pm. Its space is there for each and everyone of us.

Gardening Tips for MarchHopefully by the time this is being read the soil, as well as the pace in the vegetable plot, is beginning to warm up. Don't, however, be lulled into thinking that we are over the hill yet - the weather can still turn nasty at this time of the year. Concentrate on sowing only the hardiest vegetables outdoors. Indoors, there's plenty to be getting on with to give you a flying start to the new season.1] One outdoor job is planting onion sets. Red onions don't crop as well as brown onions, which probably explains why they are more expensive in the shops to buy as a vegetable. Plant in a weed free soil, loosen with a trowel and push the set into the earth so that the tip is covered. Space them 10cm apart in rows 15cm distant. Watch for birds pulling them out and replant if necessary.2] Amongst the seeds you can sow indoors are aubergines, celery, cucumbers, globe artichokes, salads, sweet peppers and tomatoes. If you can provide a gentle heat you will get better germination.3] Sow calabrese, summer cauliflowers and Brussel sprouts now in a greenhouse or a sheltered spot outdoors. Use 7cm pots or modular trays filled with multipurpose compost. Although more expensive, F1 hybrids give better germination. The packs can be resealed and the seeds kept till next year, though some F1 hybrid varieties have very few seeds per pack.4] Later in the month you can sow your first lot of carrots. Don't be tempted to buy those grown in plugs and sold either on line or in markets. They are expensive and the results are just not worth it. To my mind plug plants for carrots, beetroot, spring onions and radishes are a waste of money.5] Help - I've run out of space. In essence, sow indoors now: leeks, plant shallots, broad beans in pots and outdoors: beetroot, peas, parsnips, turnips, spring onions and radish. Be prepared to cover everything with cloches or fleece if the weather is bad.
Wendell Berry, an American poet and novelist said: "The earth is what we all have in common"
Happy gardening.

Fundraiser for Stickney Show to be held on 15th July, 2017
Stickney Show CommitteeThe Stickney Show Committee are organising some major fund-raising events to raise sufficient money to put on a great village show and to
hopefully be in the position, to give back some of the profits to worthy local causes. With the support of you, the reader, we would love to be able to double the £1,000 donated last year?! As in the words of a popular song, it might be a case of “To dream, the impossible dream...”, but we believe that:
WITH THE PEOPLE OF STICKNEY ON OUR SIDE THE DREAM COULD BECOME A REALITY
Did I imagine you say, “But how can I help?” Well, if you are a local business person you can Sponsor the Show and get your business advertised on the Showground and have a free advert in the Official Show Programme for 2017, or if your business lends itself to it you could ask for a Booking Form to bring along a Trade Stand/Stall to promote your business. Local Organisations can have a stand or stall which is FREE and they can take the opportunity to do some fundraising for their own organisation. Local individuals can, for only £10, have a stall – just get in touch for a Booking Form. Finally, you might be able to offer an hour or two of your time to be put on a rota of helpers for the day itself – don’t worry if you aren’t as agile as you were, there are lots of jobs which can be done sitting down but we do require active people as well! Why not involve a friend so that you have somebody you know helping alongside you? Information for your calendar and diary:08 April – Easter Bingo in Stickney Youth Centre17 June – We are hoping to pull off a “ Supper followed by an

Friends of Stickney SurgeryWe are a small group of people who all have a common interest that being to help the patients of Stickney Surgery in whatever way we can.
We have in the past arranged speakers to talk on different health subjects and would be open to suggestions for any future talks.
We also do some fundraising which allows us to purchase items for the surgery which we feel would benefit the patients and which would not normally be funded by the NHS. Our popular ongoing quizzes can be purchased from the surgery reception at £1 per sheet. They are not too difficult hence no need for having the use of a computer. There are 3 small prizes with 3 larger prizes for the Christmas quiz, the winners of which were Mrs J Johnson, Mrs J Dalleywater and Mr B Houghton who received shopping vouchers of their choice to the value of £15, £10 and £5 respectively. The current quiz runs until 16 March with the next one running from 20 March.
We would always welcome new members so if anyone would be interested in joining us our next meeting will be our AGM and will be held at the surgery at 10.00am on Monday 27 March.
If anyone would like to know more about our group or put forward for discussion any item for a future talk you can contact our Chairperson, Mrs Audrey Braybrooks on 01205 480504.

Planning Applications Received The following plans were looked at and SUPPPORTED by the Parish Council:S/169/02454/16 - Mr F Booley - Outline erection of 3 dwellings (means of access to be considered) at Lynwood, Main Road, Stickney.
The Parish Council OBJECTED to the following applications:S/203/02501/16 - Mr D Nelson - Outline erection of 3 dwellings at land adjacent to Holme Farm, Stickney Lane, West FenThis application has been re-submitted with the additional wording on the Design & Access Statement of “outline erection of 3 affordable detached dwellings”. The issues of each property needing a car to access local amenities remains an issue; the speeding vehicles along Stickney Lane remains a problem to access the highway; the fact that there is no footway for families to safely walk to the village amenities is still an issue; the fact that trees align the highway in this area is still a fact; the fire hydrant will still need to be improved for any additional properties in this area and the development is outside the boundary of the sustainable village and is not in keeping with the area.S/169/02377/16 - Mr & Mrs Bradshaw - Erection of 1 detached house on the site of existing mobile home which is to be removed to include the provision of parking at Charnwood, West Fen Lane, StickneyThis application was previously refused and an appeal was dismissed on the grounds of this being in an unsustainable countryside location, this was upheld on appeal. The same issues exist with the new application. Planning was never given for the siting of the mobile home. Residents living in West Fen Lane need a car to access village amenities. There are a number of other areas in the village being developed where cars would not be a necessity and all the amenities are accessible. S/120/02241/16 - Beeswax Dyson Farming Limited - Excavation of land to form a lagoon for the storage of digestate fertilizer with embankments to a maximum height of 2 metres and erection of perimeter fencing and gates to a maximum height of 1.8 metres at Land at Grange Farm, Barlode Drain, MidvilleThe increase in traffic along Hall Lane, Horbling Lane and Midville Lane, which is already in a poor state of repair. The weight of the vehicles using these residential roads. The potential odour from the lagoon affecting residents on Midville Lane
Planning DecisionsFULL planning permission has been received for:S/169/02037/16 - Miss J Knight - Extension to existing dwelling to provide a living room at 1 Portland House, Main RoadS/169/02106/16- Ark Wildlife Park Consent to display 1 free-standing sign at Ark Wildlife Park, West Fen Lane
REFUSAL of planning permission has been received for:S/169/02377/16 - Mr & Mrs Bradshaw - Erection of 1 detached house on the site of existing mobile home which is to be removed to include the provision of parking at Charnwood, West Fen Lane, Stickney
The following application has been WITHDRAWN:S/169/02243/16 - Visual Developments Limited - Erection of 3 houses each with a detached single garage on site of existing dwelling which is to be demolished at Woodbine Cottage, Hall Lane
Great British Spring CleanIf anyone is interested in taking part in a ‘Spring Clean’ in Stickney, litter picking and tidying up the village, for one day on 29 April 2017, please advise the Clerk or the Chairman of the Parish Council. If there is enough interest then ELDC will be approached to provide litter pickers and bags for the day and they will collect the full bags afterwards.
The next Parish Council Meeting will be held on Thursday 02 March 2017 in the Youth Centre at 7.30pm. There will be a public forum from 7.15pm.
