Wildlife preservation: Our 50 million gallon lakes continue to play home for many migrating birds on their annual flight south and north each year. Canada Geese to crane, the wildlife abounds at the Desert Springs JW Marriott Resort & Spa. While some birds call us home for a couple of days, others make us their permanent home.

audubon soCiety: On June 26, 2008 both golf courses at JW Marriott Desert Springs were designated as Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuaries. The Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program (ACSP) addresses five key environmental quality areas: Wildlife and Habitat Management, Chemical Use Safety and Reduction, Water Conservation, Water Quality Management, and Outreach & Education.

Waste management:-Reduce, Recycle, Reuse… This is our philosophy when it comes to handling waste and excess.

-Colored recycling bins have been placed at the service lifts on each guest floor.

-All the landscaping waste from the resort’s 450 acres are sent out to a local composting facility.

-Reusable linens and guest amenities are donated to charitable and community organizations.

-We have replaced paper and plastic products in our Hummingbird Café (the associate cafeteria) where we serve 1,400 associate meals daily – with china, glass and silver.

-Chefs in non-public view kitchens wear linen, washable and reusable hats to cut down on paper use.

-Toner and ink cartridges are sent back to our vendors for recycling to help reduce waste.

Water and energy Conservation: -Our property has installed water flow restriction devices, and regularly collects and uses rainwater and reclaimed water for landscaping which is particularly effective in our dry desert climate.

-Our laundry and washers reuse the final rinse water as the first wash cycle of the next batch.

-Guests can request reusing their towels and bedding during their stay.

-The resort has installed energy saving systems for heating and cooling which monitor the thermostat settings in public and unoccupied spaces.

-We participate in our country’s energy savings program by running our laundry facilities only in off-peak hours.

-We have reduced the resort’s annual electricity consumption by five (5) percent by turning off lights, copiers and computers when not in use.

-The resort has installed an energy savings hotline and report form where associates can report energy wasters or potential savings suggestions.

-Our kitchen and laundry equipment has energy saving devices built in.

-We have installed reflective diffusers around the fluorescent lights to maintain the same lighting levels.

-Electronic ballast and T-8 technology lighting.

- Our guestroom windows are double insulated to reduce heat gain.

-We conserve water with flow limiters in bathrooms, automatic shut-off valves in the resort’s public restrooms and have instituted a full-load policy for our dishwashers.

-Keeping in theme with our green initiatives, the resort has installed blackout drapes in all guestrooms and, as part of the housekeeper’s daily activities, the drapes are closed during the day to help conserve energy.

-An “Eco” message for energy and water conservation is stressed during the daily 15-minute training in our Engineering Department and in the Daily Humm, our associate eNewsletter. Speaking of the Daily Humm, we have available on-line to help reduce paper cost. The resort’s letterhead and copy paper are all supplied by recycled paper. Toner and ink cartridges are sent back to our vendors for recycling to help reduce waste.

Clean air initiatives:We have helped reduce greenhouse gases by replacing existing heating, ventilation and cooling equipment with more efficient systems. Our resort maintains over 200 electric powered golf carts. These electric carts help cut down on emissions and greenhouse gases. Our Housekeeping Department protects the ozone by using environmentally friendly chemicals. We have partnered with Ecolab to ensure we are using green certified products.

bio fuel:Bio-Fuel usage at Desert Springs, creating cleaner air quality. In 2008 Desert Springs purchased a Biodiesel Extractor to process used cooking oil (approximately 45 gallons per week) into useable Biodiesel fuel to run our landscaping equipment. Bio-diesel technology is bio-degradable and creates lower emissions resulting in cleaner air quality in the Coachella Valley.

Marriott International has a world-wide ECHO program. For more information about Marriott’s environmental practices, contact Marriott Community Relations, One Marriott Drive, Washington, D.C. 20058, USA, 1-301-380-7772.

Clean-up Campaigns:The Desert Springs JW Marriott Resort & Spa follows our founder’s philosophy of “The Spirit to Serve.” Our associates pick up litter. Whether we do it on our own or as part of a larger campaign, cleaning up our streets, parks, desert and other public spaces is one of our favorite ways to contribute to the communities in which we live and work. We celebrate World Environment Day by cleaning up the neighborhood around the resort, by fixing and repainting public chairs, cleaning out street drains and weeding around trees.

Our new laundry system is saving 50% water and electricity

Evapotranspiration Monitoring - system maximizing watering efficiency. Ratio/relationship between level of humidity, wind speed and watering frequency to insure quality playing conditions coupled with effective watering protocol.

We are currentlyinvestigating the possibility

of utilizing our 7.7 acres of roofspace for solar power. This solar

power is a year and a half away, butwould generate one third of our electricity on site and would be

100% clean energy.
