STEP THREE: TAKE A SNEAK PEEKSchedule a tour of your favorite apartments with the landlords or property owners. Try to visualize yourself living there. See if the apartment matches your personality.

STEP ONE: AMENITIES & BUDGETBegin your search by making a list of all the required apartment amenities. Next, decide what you can afford. If your amenity’s list outweighs your budget, you may consider getting roommates. Some apartments are all inclusive, with utilities included in the rent, and some are not. Always inquire if there are additional expenses such as water, electricity, gas, cable, appliances, parking and Internet. In addition, ask about signing bonuses, special or discounts.

If you are reading this article you are probably looking for an apartment, or you are

simply preparing yourself for the process. Apartment hunting is not a complicated task as long as you know what you are looking for, and know how to organize your search. Realizing your daily routine is full of important tasks and crucial obligations; we have provided you with tips and ideas on how to simplify your apartment search.

STEP TWO: THE SEARCH Begin your search by researching apartments around the Marquette area. Word of mouth is often your best gauge, but that often provides limited but useful information. Try Internet sites such as www.MarquetteLiving.org, which will help you organize your search according to location, price, square feet and amenities. MarquetteLiving.org will allow you to login and setup a “Favorites” page that organizes and saves your favorite properties.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT APARTMENT

Page 15: Marquette+Living Fall 2015

PAGE

15

STEP FOUR: SIGNING SCHEDULEAfter carefully analyzing all your options, the time will come to finally make a decision and a commitment. Keep in mind the landlord’s signing agreement’s schedule. Some apartments need a one-year advance notification of your intention to rent. Some have physical waiting lists that require you to stand in line prior to assignment. Contact the landlord or property owner for schedules, time-lines and signing requirements.

STEP SIX: MOVE IN!Now that you have found the perfect apartment to live in, go ahead and start planning your move. You will have to consider many things, from summer storage to all the different decorations for your new home. For more tips on moving, please go to page 26 and read our article, “Moving In.” Good luck on the rest of your adventure!

STEP FIVE: RENTAL AGREEMENT Signing the agreement is a legal and binding contract between you and your landlord. You will need to provide documents that prove you have the funding to pay for the apartment. This may include a pay stud, last year’s W2, your social security number for credit score purposes, or your most current bank account statement. Campus landlords realize parents can supplement their child’s rent, so they too may need to provide some sort of documentation. Ask about the financial need to secure the contract. Will you need first months, last months and the deposit when you sign the contract? If so, ask about payment options. Can you use direct deposit, checks or credit cards? Remember, in Marquette’s tight rental market it is often the one who has the paperwork and funding first, who will be considered first for the apartment.

Moving into a new apartment is an exciting time. Prior

to moving there are a few things that need to be done. Here are three simple steps to keep in mind when having to move into a new place.

1. Coordinate with your roommates what each will contribute. Figure out who is bringing the couch, chairs, television and coffee tables. Further, consider the kitchen and any other shared spaces.

2. Determine how to move your items. Friends are always a great source, but when they are not available there are numerous moving companies in the area that will help you pack, move and unload furniture.

3. Look for a storage facility. They are perfect for keeping your belongings safe and secure for the following school year.
