If one were to attend a SpecialOlympics New Jersey competi-tion, there’s a decent chancethey’d get to see 32-year-old Marl-ton resident Steve Rodenbeck.
Rodenbeck is a busy athlete, competing in programs year-round in flag football, basketball, floor hockey, volleyball and ten-nis. He’s participated in numer-ous Special Olympics events, in-cluding on a floor hockey team atthe Winter World Games in Boise,Idaho, in 2009.
Just a few weeks ago, Roden-beck got to check off another boxon his long list of athletic accom-plishments
Rodenbeck played on the TeamNew Jersey unified volleyballteam in Los Angeles last month atSpecial Olympics Summer WorldGames. The team was chosen torepresent Team USA in the uni-fied volleyball tournament.
The World Games is the largestinternational summer event forSpecial Olympics. Like its Sum-mer Olympics counterpart, it isheld once every four years. Los
Angeles hosted this year’s event. It was the first time the SummerWorld Games were held in theUnited States since 1999.
When Rodenbeck found outhe’d have the opportunity to par-ticipate in the Summer WorldGames for the first time, he wasecstatic.
“I was jumping over the stars,”Rodenbeck said. “It was a greatfeeling to be selected.”
Rodenbeck was one of just 17athletes from New Jersey selectedfor the games. In addition to theunified volleyball team, fourtriathletes, two gymnasts and twocyclists from the Garden Statealso traveled to Los Angeles. Hav-ing already represented the Unit-ed States at the Winter World
Games in 2009, Rodenbeck could-n’t wait to do it again.
“I feel very honored to repre-sent our country,” he said. “It’s
just a great overall feeling. It’ssomething we were very proudof.”
Rodenbeck began playing uni-fied volleyball a couple years agoafter participating in a clinic. He

Residents who need a little helpfinding their way around the Eve-sham Township Municipal Com-plex will soon have just that.
The help comes as EveshamTownship is set to soon launch itsown touch screen informationkiosk, which will stand at the en-trance of the municipal buildingpast the building’s second set of sliding doors, next to the stairway
and elevator.According to township manag-
er Tom Czerniecki, the kiosk willreplace the current system of di-recting residents, which is a largeeasel with a sheet of paper listingthe location of the services a resi-dent might be looking for.
“In 2008, we said let’s list theservice your looking for ratherthan the department, and the
room number, so that was a leapforward, but we realized that weactually need both,” Czernieckisaid.
“We need an actual map by de-partment, and we also need a mapby service.”
Czerniecki said that the coun-cil budgeted for the project sometime ago, but finding the softwareakin to the type of system thatmany corporations use was ex-pensive.
As such, Czerniecki said town-
ship management informationsystems director Lisa Ott wasable to use Microsoft’s basic Pow-erPoint program to design a sys-tem to suit the township’s needs.
“We were really reluctant tocommit to any one vendor be-cause historically we tend to payfor more than we use, but withthe reduction in cost for some of the touch screen technology
that’s out there, Lisa worked real-ly hard to find a way to makePowerPoint useful with this,” Cz-erniecki said.
Upon approaching the kiosk, users will see a screen that willfade in and out when the kiosk isnot in direct use that will displayupcoming meetings set to takeplace at the municipal building.
On that touch screen will betwo options for residents to selectwith their finger – an option forthe building’s directory by de-
partment name and number, andan option for a directory by serv-ices available at the complex.
Users can select the buildingdirectory if they know the exactdepartment they’re looking for, which will take them to a pagelisting the different departmentsand their room numbers.
Touching one of those roomnumbers will then take visitors toa screen with a map of the munic-ipal building, as well as writtendirections telling visitors how to
get to the room they selectedusing the stairs or the elevators.
If a resident approaches thekiosk and is unsure what depart-ment they’re looking for, they canselect the service directory, whichCzerniecki said will give them alist of the top 10 services and in-formation available at the munic-ipal building that residents do notperform online
Those services include con-struction and zoning permits,
court business, employment ap-plications, fire inspections, mar-riage licenses and vital statistics, miscellaneous licenses and per-mits, pet licenses, property as-sessments, tax payments andwater and sewer business.
The kiosk’s screens will alsofeature a QR code for municipalbuilding visitors to scan withtheir smart phones that will allowvisitors to follow the township’sFacebook page.
Czerniecki said an audio but-
ton would eventually also beavailable to announce directionsas well.

few more weeks. That’s all
that we have left of summer.
Technically, there are about
six weeks left, but in the lives of us
New Jersey residents, Labor Day –
when most schools go back in session
for the 2015-2016 year – marks the end
to our summer. No more beach. No more pool. No
more fun – OK, maybe that’s a bit dra-
matic.
But it’s not all doom and gloom with
summer gone. In fact, there’s plenty to
be excited about, and we’ve been hard
at work covering this excitement al-
ready.
Our senior associate editor, Mike
Monostra, loves this time of year.
That’s because the end of August
means the start of one of his pas-
sions – covering sports. Mike has been
on the summer sports camp trail for a
week or so now, and he will continue to
be out and about on local fields as ourhigh school teams continue to prepare
for the upcoming season.
Soon, you’ll see some of the photos
Mike and our other editors have taken
at these camps. Soon, you’ll begin read-
ing more about the teams, players and
coaches who are involved in the games
they love. And soon, on Sept. 9 to be
exact, you’ll be receiving The Sun’s
High School Fall Sports Preview guide.
Our fall sports preview special sec-
tion is a stand-alone piece previewing
each high school fall sport, with full
schedules for the entire season and fea-
ture stories as well.
Mike is reaching out to every high
school coach and athletic director for
the fall season for the section. But
we’re calling on parents, coaches and
even players to participate as well.
Sports will be a major focus of up-
coming issues of The Sun, as you’ll
soon see. And not just high school var-sity sports. We want to cover the JV
and freshman teams, as well as all the
community sports teams.
But we can’t do it all by ourselves.
We need the help of the extended com-
munity. Have a story idea, a score, a
picture? Send it over.
If we can’t send an editor out to do a
full-length story and photoshoot, we’ll
make sure your team, sport, league or
club is still covered.
Our doors are always open – as are
our phone lines and inboxes. Let’s
make this fall sports season one to re-
member!
in our opinion
Play ball!Calling all coaches, parents and players – we need your he lp this season

competed with Team New Jerseyin the sport at the SpecialOlympics USA Games in 2014.
Unified volleyball is a uniqueevent at Special Olympics whereathletes with disabilities competewith those without intellectualdisabilities, named “unified part-
ners.” Rodenbeck said playingwith unified partners has allowedhim to make new friends andlearn more about volleyball strat-egy.
“What happens is they showyou how to position yourself,” hesaid. “There were a couple timeswe had to switch from right to leftand from left to right and the part-ner would show us how to get setand in position on offense and de-fense.”
Shortly after the 2014 USA
Games ended last summer, thevolleyball team found out itwould be going to the WorldGames in 2015.
“We received a letter in themail saying we’ve been chosen torepresent the United States,” Ro-denbeck said.
The team traveled to Californiathe week prior to the start of theworld games and trained at Uni-versity of California-Riverside.
Once the competition got un-
derway, Team New Jersey raninto some tough competitionagainst countries such as Ger-many and Austria. Rodenbecksaid the team’s goal was to put itsbest effort forward each match.
“We just wanted to go outthere, do our best and have agreat time,” he said.
The team fell short of a bronzemedal, but Rodenbeck said partic-ipating was enough of a reward. Some of his favorite memoriesweren’t the actual match, but
rather activities the team did off the court.
“I enjoyed the different tripswe made,” he said “We went toHollywood, the Walk of Fame, theMadame Tussauds Wax Muse-
um.”Rodenbeck also loved the inter-
national flavor of the WorldGames. He said it makes the eventunique from some of the otherSpecial Olympics events he par-ticipated in.
“We get to trade things with
them,” Rodenbeck said. “I eventraded my USA polo shirt for aFinland polo shirt.”
Rodenbeck plans to continuehis busy athletic schedule withflag football this fall and hopes toreturn to the World Games in thefuture. He also hopes others in hiscommunity get involved withSpecial Olympics, saying a littlebit of effort can go a long way.
“Just do your best and havefun,” he said.
