Using the Internet to find a place to live isn’tall that difficult these days, but doing so whilealso being a dog is a bit more of a challenge.

That’s the story of SweetSuri, the nearly 1-year-oldpitbull mix who is trying tofind a permanent home, oras her Facebook page putsit, a “Forever Family.”

A bear affairBy MIKE MONOSTRA

The Sun

He took down a bird feeder, went for a swim in a pond andtook some time to tweet about hisadventures.

For six days, a black bear be-came the talk of the town in Eve-sham and Mt. Laurel.

Local residents kept their eyespeeled for the bear, which wasfirst reported in Evesham onThursday, June 12. The townshipposted a picture of the bear eating

out of a bird feeder near the sideof the road.

On Saturday, Evesham officialssaid the bear was seen in KingsGrant, Barton Run and near theMemorial Sports Complex beforedisappearing into the woods.

Township officials were notpleased with the lack of actionfrom the state Division of Fishand Wildlife. A post on the town-

ship’s Facebook page said thestate refused to sedate and relo-cate the bear. Mayor RandyBrown, council, township manag-er Bill Cromie and deputy town-ship manager Monica Vanden-berg signed the post, saying the di-vision’s decision was “frustratingto the township and makes littlesense.”

Township officials could not bereached for further comment.

In response, the state’s Divisionof Fish and Wildlife preferred toallow the bear to continue on its

way rather than relocate it. Thebear was not to be sedated unlessit posed a threat to residents orproperty.

After spending the weekend inEvesham, the bear reappeared inMt. Laurel last Monday morning.Early reports indicated the bearwas seen near the intersection of Mt. Laurel Road and Haines-

55 pounds and isn’t expected toget much bigger, is crate trained, housebroken and would be a

great fit in a home with otherdogs.

“Definitely a home with otherdogs,” Anderson said. “She lovesother dogs. We’re unsure of smallanimals and cats as of right now. We’re not sure if she would getalong with them or if she wouldthink of them as toys. Childrenwould also be good. She gets alonggreat with kids.”

Suri is on medication forher mange, which will eventuallygo away, so Anderson saidfor a short time longer, Suriwould probably be better off in

her foster home, but after that shewill be ready for her forever fami-ly.

“I describe her as sassy,” An-derson said. “She’s sort of a bigpersonality in a little body. She’s

just this huge personality inthere. She’s just silly. I’ve nevermet a sillier dog in my life. She’s

 just social.”Those interested in adopting

e realize that you may have

other, more pressing con-

cerns on your mind. After

all, summer has officially started, the

kids are out of school, it’s hot, it’s

rainy, then it’s hot again.

You’d rather be by a pool or at the

beach, avoiding the South Jersey bear

or the Jersey Shore shark, planning

your Fourth of July celebrations, your

family vacation, or pondering the silli-

ness of the government making salt

water taffy the state’s official candy.

And yes, we realize that late June is

not typically the time for reflection.

That is usually reserved for the wan-

ing days of December and the begin-

ning of a new year.

But for us at Elauwit Media, we’ve

spent the last few months looking

back, and we’ll be spending a chunk of

our summer doing the same.

That’s because, come August, we’ll

be turning 10 years old. Our first

newspaper, The Haddonfield Sun, de-

buted in August 2004. Since then,

we’ve expanded quite a bit.

Along the way, we have some great

memories. We’ve made great contacts,

some great friends and have done our

best to serve the residents of every

town we cover.

Now, it’s time to reflect on those 10

years. This summer, we’ll be celebrat-

ing the last decade, and we want your

input.

What has the last 10 years meant to

you? What does your life look like

today compared to what it looked like

in 2004? What does any stretch of 10

years mean in a larger sense?

Over the summer, we’ll be compil-

ing stories, photos and more that help

us paint a picture of what 2004-2014

has meant, both to us specifically and

to the town and its residents.

If you’d like to be a part of this ef-

fort, if you’d like to contribute your

thoughts, your insights, your stories

and your photos, please send an email

to [email protected].

We’re involving our readers in our

10-year celebration because you are

the reason we started our first Sun

newspaper, you are the reason we

started more, and you are the reason

we continue to publish every week.

The last 10 years have been great for

us, and we hope they have been equal-

ly as great for you.

Help us reflect on these past 10 years

as we prepare for the next 10, and

hopefully even more.

Evesham ponders taking control of two roadsBy ZANE CLARK

The Sun

Mayor Randy Brown recently had thetownship explore the idea of assumingcontrol of Main Street and Maple Avenuefrom Burlington County, arguing the townwould have an easier time planning townevents and attracting developers if it hadsole control over the two roads.

The roads are under the township and

county’s joint-authority, but Brown wantsEvesham to have full control of Maple Av-enue between Routes 70 and 73 and MainStreet between Route 73 and ElmwoodRoad.

Brown asked township manager William

Cromie and Councilman Steve Zeulli toreach out to county officials concerningthe idea, and at the most recent townshipcouncil meeting, they reported back withthe county’s response.

The two met with the head of theBurlington County highway department, who said the county would be willing togive Evesham sole control over the tworoads.

However, the highway department head

said the county would not be willing to giveany money the county currently spends onthe roads or accept an equal amount of Evesham’s roads in exchange, both possi-bilities Brown and council had previouslydiscussed.

“We got no indication that they were in-terested in taking any other road that wewould offer them, and secondly, there wasno offer of dollars in order to offset any-thing that we would have to put out,”Cromie said.

Zeulli expressed his concern about as-suming control of the roads and taking onthe extra costs associated with paving andmaintaining.

“I look at it and I say, well we’re getting

the service of something now for free, andthen we’d have to pay for it, and whatwould we be looking to pay for it from whatwe would get in return,” Zeulli.

Bear left township last week

port/Mt. Laurel Road.Hillside Elementary School

was hosting its field day on Mon-day when reports came in sayingthe bear was in the school’s vicini-ty. School district director of com-munications Marie Reynolds said

the bear was not seen near any of the schools, and field day activi-ties went on without a hitch.

Updates on the bear’s where-abouts did not just come from thelocal authorities. A Twitter ac-count, @Mtlaurelbear, began totalk to followers on Tuesdaymorning, around the time whenthe bear was reported to be wan-dering around the Birchfield de-velopment off Union Mill Road.

“It's great to be back in Mt. Lau-rel! Think I'll stop by the Birch-

field pool or pond today,” the“bear” said.

The Twitter account was origi-nally created last year. In 2013, ablack bear wandered residentialcommunities such as Delran,

Moorestown and Mt. Laurel, cap-turing the attention of local resi-dents.

The appearance of bears thelast two years has some residentswondering if more will wanderinto the area in the future. BobConsidine from the state Divisionof Fish and Wildlife said bears aremost commonly found in thenorthwestern section of the state. However, there has been an in-

crease in bear reports in Burling-ton County. There were 30 uncon-firmed reports last year, up from22 reports in 2012.

“I’d say it’s uncommon, but notunheard of,” Considine said of bear activity in the county.

Considine acknowledged therehas been a trend of bears migrat-ing south through New Jersey, butit is difficult to tell whether it willcontinue long-term.

“We’re getting more sightingsin Central Jersey this year, but

(bear sightings) happen everyyear,” he said.

The Division of Fish andWildlife provides tips for thosewho encounter bears in theirneighborhood. Among these are

avoid eye contact with the bear, make noise by banging pots andpans, and back away slowly fromthe bear instead of running.

For now, Mt. Laurel is bear-freeonce again. Mt. Laurel Police saidthe bear left the township lastTuesday evening, departing eastfor Hainesport Township. As of the morning of June 19, he hadtraveled north of the RancocasCreek and into Westampton

Township and Mt. Holly. Therehave been no reports of injuriesor property damage in connectionwith the bear.

BEAR SAFETY TIPS

• If a bear enters your home, provide it with an escape route bypropping all doors open.

• Avoid direct eye contact and never run from a bear. Instead, slow-ly back away.

• To scare the bear away, make loud noises by yelling, banging potsand pans or using an air horn. Make yourself look as big as possibleby waving your arms. If you are with someone else, stand closetogether with your arms raised above your head.

• The bear may utter a series of huffs, make popping jaw sounds bysnapping its jaws and swat the ground. These are warning signs thatyou are too close. Slowly back away, avoid direct eye contact and donot run.

• If a bear stands on its hind legs or moves closer, it may be tryingto get a better view or detect scents in the air. It is usually not athreatening behavior.

• Black bears will sometimes “bluff charge” when cornered, threat-ened or attempting to steal food. Stand your ground, avoid direct eyecontact, then slowly back away and do not run.

• If the bear does not leave, move to a secure area.• Immediately notify the Department of Environmental Protection’s

24-hour, toll-free hotline at (1-877) 927-6337.• Families who live in areas with high black bear populations should

have a “Bear Plan” in place for children, with whistles, air horns andan escape route.

• Black bear attacks are extremely rare. If a black bear does attack, fight back.

“We’ve seen the cost outlineshere, and they’re significant.”

The county provided pavingcost information and data statingthat Main and Maple had notbeen repaved since sometimearound 2004 or 2005, and shouldbe repaved around every sevenyears. Brown disagreed with thatassessment.

“They both seem to still be inpretty good shape,” Brown said.

“They only thing I don’t agreewith is that you’re going to repavethem every seven years, I don’tagree with that. I think you’regoing to be repaving them every10 to 15 at the most.”

Zeulli also argued that even if the time between repaving can be

longer than the county estimates, costs have gone up since the lasttime they were paved and thenumbers the county provided.

“Just out of normal inflation, you can add 2-3 percent a year.Expect that when you’re dealingwith a commodity like asphalt. It’s very volatile, and it’salways going to be more expen-sive,” Zeulli said. “So the price of a simple overlay, about 40 percentis the cost of the asphalt in that

 job.”Brown still believed the town-

ship could manage the costs of as-suming the roads, 2.6 miles in

total, because of the money Eve-sham would gain from havingmore developers willing to investin the town if they didn’t have todeal with two planning boards.

“We lose how many hundredsof thousands of dollars in tax dol-lars and how much money in rat-

ables because the county saysthey didn’t like the project,”Brown said.

Councilman Robert DiEnna

said he wanted more time to re-search the pros and cons of tak-ing on the responsibility of theroads.

“There have been occasionswhen we have sat here and lookedat some of the decisions that weremade prior to this mayor andcouncil, and going back quite aways and you say ‘Wow, whatwere they thinking when they didthat?’” DiEnna said. “I don’t wantto be identified with a decision

down the road unless I’m con-vinced that it’s the right way togo.”

Other members of thecouncil agreed, and Brown ulti-mately said the issue should bediscussed further in a futurework session.

Issue to be discussed furtherISSUE
