The use of visualizations alleviates these problems. Analysts leverage visualization tools to get quick overviews of data as well as to drill down into and explore their information to get better insights. These visual analyses often reveal trends and patterns that would otherwise not be found through non-graphical means. To provide visualizations for analysts, application developers have to start with a system that fully supports the underlying data. Analysts today scan through more than just tabular data, as they need to analyze a wide variety of data types including documents and reports. In other words, they need to analyze Big Data.

They want to search for information, browse by categories, aggregate values, and plot all the results onto a visual display. The growing volumes of information available today continue to put a heavy work load on data analysts. It is difficult and often too time consuming for analysts to separate the useful information from the rest. They risk drawing incorrect conclusions because they missed buried, relevant information. Or they risk missing a critical deadline or opportunity because it took so long to analyze the data.

Visualization Widgets

Developers want an integrated, out-of-the-box set of graphical widgets that can be used to visually display data. Rather than write custom code to integrate third-party libraries, they want a built-in package that is supported with the underlying database. MarkLogic Visualization Widgets provide the visualization capabilities to let developers add visual displays to their MarkLogic applications, and gain more value from their Big Data.

The Visualization Widgets are a suite of HTML5 components built with tuned APIs to display summaries of data stored in MarkLogic. They let developers speed time-to-deployment when building applications with powerful user interfaces, without having to code/recode intricate interface details. They include:

• Bar, column, line, and pie charts• Plotting of points on an interactive map, and

visualizing the density of geospatial occurrences over large data sets• Interactive filtering of results by user-drawn regions• JavaScript API and data access utilities

operational and BI database. This allows organizations to make decisions with Big Data in real time while also simplifying their IT architecture.

With MarkLogic BI Tools Interface, organizations can connect IBM Cognos or Tableau to MarkLogic to run reports. This lets analysts leverage existing BI reports on data stored in MarkLogic without requiring custom integration work or custom code. It also lets organizations avoid additional expenditures for new BI tools.

At the core of the BI Tools Interface is an ODBC driver that enables connectivity from the BI tools to MarkLogic. Views created in MarkLogic allow all BI tools to query data in an expected tabular format.

BI Tools Interface

Analysts who are already using business intelligence (BI) tools on tabular data can now leverage those tools on a wider variety of data, including both structured and unstructured data. One challenge with reporting on unstructured data is the use of multi-valued items (e.g., multiple phone numbers, multiple bank accounts, etc.), which leads to complicated modeling into the rows and columns of traditional technologies. Instead of spending significant time with extract/transform/load (ETL) tools to get unstructured data into a separate BI system, analysts want to run reports directly on their consolidated
