Renaissance Period: Time Span
• From: Approximately 1425• To: Approximately 1600
• Renaissance: A French word for rebirth– Rebirth of philosophy, literature, art, music
and theater• William Shakespeare, Playwright• Leonardo de Vinci, Art/Painter• Nicolaus Copernicus, Scientist/Astronomer
Renaissance Period: The Music
• Church Music– Most music in this time period was written for
church and religious ceremonies– 1517: start of the Reformation period
• Catholic church splits• New branch called Protestant led by Martin Luther
– New music written in the language of where the church was unlike the Catholic music which remained in Latin
Renaissance Period: The Music
• Music as Entertainment– There was more freedom for music
composers and musicians– Emphasis on lyrics that were poetic or was
very meaningful– Music would convey emotions
• Polyphonic music was new and popular
