$500 range, with most $50-$200. The gallery/dealer prices can be a
multiple of the auction values.

higher premium, several hundred dollars into the tens to hundreds
of thousands of dollars.

Major Value Factors For Wine
• The Pedigree Of The Particular Winery – Wines with
impeccable reputations such as the French first growth
Bordeaux, such as Haut Brion, or Domaine Romanee Conti in
Burgundy are reliable investments as the demand almost
always outpaces the supply. A number of these wineries have
been in business for several centuries.
• The Pedigree Of The Particular Vintage – The best
vintages are those that had just enough rain, not overly hot or
cold, that produced the best grapes in that region. In
Bordeaux the greatest vintages in the past 50 plus years are
2009, 2005, 2000, 1990, 1989, 1982, 1961.
• Desirability – This is the “it” factor.
54
Major Value Factors For Wine
• Drinkability – Most Bordeaux have arcs of 25-30 years to peak
drinking, but can be still drinkable for many more years,
especially if stored properly.
• The Wine’s Rating – By Wine Advocate, Wine Spectator, critics
such as Robert Parker, Jancis Robinson, Hugh Johnson, Steven
Tranter, etc., the more critics who rate the wine highly, the more
desirable and valuable.
• Production Quantity – First growth Bordeaux produce 10,000-
15,000 cases each year. The average production for Domaine
Romanee Conti is 500-600 cases and sells from $8,000-$20,000
a bottle; La Tache 1,500-2,000 cases and sells from $1,500-
$4,500. Screaming Eagle in Napa, the US’s most valuable wine,
bottles several hundred cases and sells from $2,000-$10,000 a
bottle. Gallo produces hundreds of thousands of bottles and sells
for about $10-$15. Supply vs. Demand.
55
Major Value Factors For Wine
• Age – As wine is a comestible, as time goes on, bottles are
drunk. Therefore, older wines are far rarer than newer wines.
Supply vs. Demand, Part II.
• Condition – This becomes more important as bottles age, but
as a comestible, wine needs to be stored in cool, constant
temperatures, ideally between 50-60 degrees, with moderate
humidity, with no light and no vibration.
• Provenance/Authenticity – One of the biggest issues today is
authenticity. Therefore, wines that can be traced without a
doubt to their source are more desirable, in less supply and
more valuable.
56
Size Can Matter
Many larger bottle are named after Biblical kings.
57
Age Classification Of Wines
“Commodity” Wines - 1982 To Present: These are usually easy to
value as there is a plentiful supply, with great consistency. Range - $5-
$20,000, most sell for $20-$2,000
“Modern Era” Wines – 1961-1982: These are usually not rare, but less
common than commodity wines. There is less consistency in quality,
although most were still bottled at the chateau. There can be variations in
the glass of the bottle, the printing and paper of the label, and overall
packaging. Range $20-$50,000, most sell for $200-$5,000
“Pre-Modern” Wines – 1945-1961: These wines are far rarer than the
modern era and commodity wines. Tasting is less consistent, much rarer,
which means that the chain of ownership and provenance are
exceedingly important. Because this market is generally so much higher,
the possibility of fakes and forgeries is much higher. Many wines were
bottled by négociants, so knowledge of importers is important. In valuing
these wines, knowledge of historical sales is vital. Range - $500-
$100,000, most sell for $1,000-$25,000
58
Age Classification Of Wines
“Golden Age” Wines – 1900-1945: Taste is inconsistent
and examples are exceedingly rare. Most are bottled by
négociants and there is little consistency in labeling and
packaging. Range - $500-$100,000, most sell for $1,000-
$25,000
“19th Century And Older” Wines: These wines are
extraordinarily rare, documentation of chain of ownership
and reconditioning is essential, condition extremely
important. Range – wide, most sell for thousands into
hundreds of thousands
59

Appraising - Physically Reviewing Wine
• Physically Inspect Wine Cellar, Noting Any
Issues With Storage Conditions
• Temperature – 52-58 Degrees, Stability
• Humidity 60%
• Location – Vibrations May Affect Flavor
And Bouquet
• Bottle Condition – Low Fill, Heavily Soiled
Label, Protruding Cork, Seepage From
Capsule, Mold, Loose Label
• Ullage – The Amount Of Wine Evaporated
• Cooked Wine – Exposed To High Temps
61
Assumptions – Wine Reports
• The appraiser assumes that the bottles have been unopened,
and the labels, capsule, cork and contents to be original and
unaltered in any way unless otherwise specified.
• The appraiser assumes that the wine has been stored in
similar conditions to those found upon physical examination.
The appraiser is not responsible if the wine has been
incorrectly stored in the past or the future.
• The appraiser assumes that the wine listed in the comparable
sales is in similar condition to the wine being appraised.
• The appraiser assumes that the wine is legal property of the
clients.
62
Wine – Limiting Conditions (AKA, CYA)
• This appraisal is limited to the appraiser’s observation at the
time of the on-site inspection. No statement is made as to
past storage or future storage of the collection, which could
affect the value of the wine.
• As the appraiser could not open the bottle(s) of wine, the
appraisal is limited to the appraiser’s assumption that the
bottles have been unopened, and the labels, capsule, cork
and contents to be original and unaltered in any way.
• The appraisal is limited to the assumption that the wines
listed in the comparable sales are in similar condition to the
wine being appraised.
