Team Poseidon places first, advancing to National SeaPerch Challenge in May

From left are Team Poseidon members Channing Reynolds and Luke Swann. Both are seventh graders at Northumberland Middle School.

For the second year in a row, Northumberland Middle School (NMS) participated in SeaPerch, a robotics project led by Shauna McCranie, coordi-nator of gifted services for the schools.

Team Poseidon from NMS placed first in the competi-tion to qualify for the National SeaPerch Challenge, said McCranie.

The participating students gave up six Friday afternoons to remain after school at NMS or travel to the YMCA swim-ming pool in Kilmarnock to build and practice with their underwater Remote Operating Vehicle, called a SeaPerch, she said.

These students in grades six through eight learned to cut pipes, solder electrical panels, waterproof batteries and work as a team, she said.

“Congratulations to all of Northumberland’s partici-pants for their hard work in the SeaPerch program,” said McCranie.

On April 15, four NMS teams of two took their SeaPerch to

the University of Mary Wash-ington and competed against 75 other teams, said McCranie.

After tallying up all the scores at the fifth annual regional SeaPerch competition,

four teams came out as winners. These teams have been invited to Georgia Tech University on May 19 and 20 to compete at the National Sea Perch Chal-lenge, she said.

The Rappahannock Art League recently announced nationally recognized artist Catherine Hillis will lead a workshop May 15 and 16 at the Studio Gallery, 19 North Main Street, Kilmarnock.

The theme will be “Light Effects in Watercolor,” reported Anne Cotter. The workshop will include an afternoon of plein air work at the Rappahannock River Yacht Club.

Hillis has painted all her life, winning hundreds of awards and honors regionally and nationally, said Cotter. She is one of 40 elected members of the Washington Society of Landscape Painters in Wash-ington, D.C.

She regularly competes in national/international water-color and plein air competi-

Hillis was featured in a five-page article in Watercolor Artist Magazine, April 2017, Plein Air Magazine, and American Artist Magazine. She garnered second place in watercolors in the book, Best of Virginia Art-ists and Artisans, 2005.

She primarily paints in water-colors, including busy street scenes, coastal landscapes and her favorite, the historic sites near her home on the Blue Ridge in Virginia, said Cotter. The hallmarks of her work are the effects of light and move-ment, with a touch of humor.

Boys & Girls Club of the Northern Neck selects April standouts

Zy’Yare Ball Corey Smith Jr.

Zy’Yare Ball, 6, and Corey Smith Jr., 15, have been named the Boys & Girls Club of the Northern Neck April Youth and Teen of the Month, accord-ing to youth program director Sheena Hebbons and teen pro-gram director Lex Wormley.

Ball is a first-grade student at Lancaster Primary School and she has been a member of the Boys & Girls Club for a year. She is a participant in the choir, good news club and garden club. She has a brother, J’seric Ball, 9, who also is a member of the Boys & Girls Club.

Ball was selected as April youth of the month because she is very polite and well-mannered, is a good volunteer, works hard to get good grades and is always smiling, said Hebbons. When she grows up she would like to become a fashion designer.

When asked how she felt to be chosen as BGCNN’s April youth of the month, Ball said “I’m happy!”

A freshman at Lancaster High School, Smith has been a club member for six years. He participates in the basketball, teen chef and money matters programs. He also plays on the basketball team at school.

Smith was chosen as April’s teen of the month because he has good character, is becom-ing a strong leader and gets good grades in school, said Wormley.

Being chosen as teen of the month “is a surprise because I have never received anything like this before,” said Smith. When asked what his future goals are, Smith said he would like to be either a professional basketball player or an accoun-tant.

The Lower Northern Neck and Botetourt alumni chap-ters invite all William & Mary area alumni, parents and their guests to a spring banquet from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, May 4, at Indian Creek Yacht & Country Club in Kilmar-

nock.This year, we are delighted

that Dr. Matthew T. Lambert ‘99, vice president for univer-sity advancement, will join us from the college as our special guest and speaker,” said com-munications vice president

Ronnee Taylor.A buffet dinner will include

fried oysters, stuffed chicken breast, roast potatoes, salad bar and desserts. A cash bar will be available.

For reservations, call Taylor, 580-4520.

W&M alumni to hold spring event

The top five teams were Team Poseidon, NMS; The Five Stars, Grafton Elementary School; J&J Mechanics, Mar-garet Brent Elementary School; SeaPerchin, Rodney Thompson Middle School; and Raindrops, Chesapeake Science Point Public Charter School

“Way to go team #12/Team Poseidon, Luke Swann and Channing Reynolds,” said McCranie. “You two are an amazing team. Congratulations to Luke as this is his second year competing at the National SeaPerch Challenge”

Special thanks to Dahlgren, the Northumberland Associa-tion for Progressive Steward-ship, Keith Swann, Matthew Sprague and the Northern Neck Family YMCA for helping the students with the SeaPerch pro-gram, she said. This has been an amazing grant opportunity and hopefully Northumberland will be able to continue this awe-some STEM initiative for years to come.

Fifth-grade students go green with Indian Creek Yacht and Country Club

Lancaster Middle School fifth-graders (above) participate in the Earth Day exercise.

Lancaster Middle School fifth-grade students on April 21 visited Indian Creek Yacht and Country Club in appreciation of Earth Day.

Students learned just how “green” golf courses are and what they can do to take care of the Earth, reported market-ing coordinator Megan Ste-phens. The students visited several stations and learned about native plants and birds found throughout the golf course, presented by volun-teers Debbie Gillispie, Jeffrey Wainscott and Henry Reily.

They then visited Certified Golf Course Superintendent, Peter Stephens, where they learned about the importance

of bee preservation and how hives work, said Stephens. Chef David McMillan and Carrie Stevens taught children about growing their own fruits and vegetables and the impor-tance of recycling.

While environmental edu-cation was the main focus of this trip, the children were also given the opportunity to simply enjoy Mother Nature with a fun station, which included tennis and golf games with the Indian Creek professional team.

“Thank you to Lancaster Middle School for allowing Indian Creek to be a part of the hands-on science exploration of the 2017 fifth grade,” said Stephens.

Sisters read 1,000 books before Kindergarten

From left are Brielle Matthews, Jan Bates and Zoey Matthews.

Brielle and Zoey Matthews are the first children to read 1,000 books before Kinder-garten, as part of a national literacy program sponsored by the Northumberland Public Library.

Every 100 books, the children brought in their 1000BooksB4K reading log and received a special little prize, reported children’s pro-grams coordinator Jan Bates.

“But the biggest prize of all was hearing all those stories,” said Bates.

Natalie Matthews, Bri-elle and Zoey’s mother, is the computer lab teacher at the Northumberland Elemen-tary School. She said being at school every day is an advan-tage because she is able to check out lots of books and carry them home for the girls. She started at the beginning of the first shelf in the picture book area and just kept right on

Art workshop will explore alcohol inksTwo Rivers Art Workshops

will present “Creating Fine Art with Alcohol Inks” with Sheryl Williams May 15 through 19 at General’s Ridge Vineyard, 1618 Weldons Drive, Hague.

There are many new medi-ums and approaches available in the art world but the jewel-tone colors of alcohol inks are exciting, plus people just love

them, reported Janice Jones.“Many of us have taken

classes using these inks and have learned to enjoy the free-dom of what we were told was our inability to totally control them. That’s in the past,” said Jones. “Sheryl’s unique teach-ing approach and what makes her different from other teach-ers is that she takes you step

to seek the best match in learn-ing settings for their child and helps to ensure that the region remains an attractive profes-sional destination,” said Nost. “Chesapeake Academy’s rig-orous curriculum focuses on authentic, place-based learning that develops vital 21st cen-tury skills. With a priority on developing good citizens who

answer the call to leadership, the Academy has been a strong contributor to the local com-munity for 51 years.”

Founded in 2001, the Faye Society recognizes contribu-tions and charitable bequests for the long-term growth and sustainability of Chesa-peake Academy. The society is named in honor of Capt.

and Mrs. James Faye who generously included Chesa-peake Academy as a benefi-ciary of their estate in 1987. Their foresight, thoughtful consideration and charitable planning made a tremendous impact on the Academy’s future and fiscal stability, said Cook.

Membership in the Faye Society recognizes patrons who have made Chesapeake Academy a part of their planned charitable giving. Since its founding 15 years ago, 60 individuals have taken a leadership role by making a commitment of planned giving to Chesapeake Acad-emy. Gifts are invested in the school’s endowment.

Chesapeake Academy’s Faye Society offers estate planners flexibility for donors that can solve a variety of estate planning needs. This sort of legacy gift is an option for all income brackets.

NES library staff started pulling books they thought the girls would enjoy to add to her daily stash. The family also makes frequent visits to NPL, where they are still discovering books they have not yet read, said Bates.

Natalie Matthews said they girls read right after school, while cooking dinner, before bedtime, waiting for their big brother “Q” to start his bas-ketball game, at halftimes….whenever and wherever they could fit in a book, they did.

Even Q Matthews got into the mix, as he delighted the

girls with his own take on books, changing his voice to match the characters in the sto-ries, said Natalie Matthews.

“The girls love it when Q reads to them using his ‘funny’ voices,” she said.

“This family is a real inspi-ration for other families in our community,” said Bates.

She encourages all families of preschoolers to strive to read 1000 books before Kin-dergarten. Anyone can sign up and start any time.

“As a retired reading teacher, I can report that children who go through this program will definitely be at an advan-tage over those who have not been read to when they begin school” she said. “It’s fun and starts a love of reading that will continue for a lifetime.”

KILMARNOCK—The Just Gardens Tour this year celebrates its 17th year of garden tours. The tour in Northumberland County this year, will feature four gar-dens and a historic school.

The tour will be held 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 12 and 13. The rain or shine event will benefit The Haven Shelter and Services.

A large stand of southern pine trees dominated the two-acre property owned by Margaret and Ted Curtis, before a hur-ricane landed on the shores of the Northern Neck. Not all the pines were lost and not everyone looks at disaster the same way. For the Curtises, disaster became an opportunity and opportunity became a woodland garden, reported CJ Carter.

The garden, created in the understory of towering pines, has matured and evolved over time. A collection of azaleas highlights the area in spring, while hollies, viburnums and Japanese maples add color and texture during summer and autumn.

The property on Harding’s Wharf Drive was purchased in 1985. A barren lot with pine trees and brush, the Curtises waited until they were ready to site the

The interior of Shiloh School depicts a classroom from the past.

The Curtis garden is among four private properties on the tour.

Just Gardens Tour set May 12-13house and begin the building pro-cess to enlist the help of Bonnie Williams Bonnell who drew the original perennial garden plan.

In the fall of 2000, Bon-nie’s husband Bill Bonnell, of Greenpoint Nursery, supplied the plants and labor to install the garden plan. Multiple varieties of hydrangea can be found in the shade and semi-shade gardens. Ornamental grasses lead your eye to the water’s edge and a col-lection of raised beds house herbs and perennials.

“Blessed with good rich soil,” Margaret says she is thankful there is “no erosion management required either.”

Opened for the first time in 2010 for the Just Gardens tour, the Curtises say they have been “busy buying plants to finish off old plans and create new spaces.” Several paths lead to destination gardens such as the Meditation garden where a large Buddha sits in a peaceful repose. The Angel’s Path and Wyatt Park offer their own surprises.

Visitors will find several places to rest and enjoy the views. Pergolas and benches dot the landscape. The Curtises rely on garden helper Julie Thostenson

who has been working in their garden since 2001.

Shiloh School, a Historic Vir-ginia Landmark, was built in 1906 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Its predecessor school also on the Shiloh School property was built in 1884. It too will be open the days of the tour.

Bag lunches will be for sale and the school property has new bathrooms and picnic tables for visitors to use. The school is notable for its stark simplicity in the landscape. Northern Neck Master Gardeners will sell rain barrels and the Northern Neck Native Plant Society will answer questions and share information.

Tour tickets are $20 in advance and $25 on tour days. Tickets may be purchased at The Dan-delion in Irvington, The Pedestal in Kilmarnock, Dream’s Fash-ion Boutique in Burgess and the Shoppe for Haven’s Sake in Warsaw.

LANCASTER—The Lan-caster County Chapter 1406, United Daughters of the Con-federacy met April 19. The highlight of the meeting was a program given by member Betty Penley.

As a graduate of the Gem-ological Institute of America and with over 20 years of expe-rience as a certified gemolo-gist appraiser, Penley presented wonderful insights into antique jewelry of the period, reported president Susan Hudson.

Interestingly, she discussed how political, cultural and soci-etal influences of nobility and the wealthy from the mid 1700s through the 1800s shaped the design of Victorian and Geor-gian jewelry. In most cases it was their life events that dictated the detail of jewelry worn by women and men of the period to include the colors of stone and type of metals used, the role symbolism played in the overall design and how the pieces reflected outward sentiment of what was happen-

ing during different periods, said Hudson.

Penley’s talk included a slide show of period nobility, dress and jewelry as well as including some of her favorite pieces as a demonstration.

Among other business, mem-bers welcomed Betsy Trexler-Pastoor to the fold. Trexler-Pastoor qualified for mem-bership based on her ancestor Samuel Field who provided material aid to the cause in Vir-ginia during the War Between the States.

Additionally, according to registrar Jude Degen’s report, it is all good news on the new member front as she has another five approved certificates in hand, three additional applica-tions pending approval at the division or general level and research has begun on another five prospective member’s lin-eage.

Second vice president Betty Christopher, reported several scholarship candidate packages

have been received from area high school seniors.

JROTC chairman Susan Christopher, provided updates about awarding a medal and cer-tificate at each high school next month.

Grave Gals chairman Laura Hazel said she is looking for members with interest in researching or walking cem-eteries to document Confederate and other veteran graves in Lan-caster County.

The Monument commit-tee reported research has been completed to identify a list of all that served in the War in Northumberland County. This has resulted in 474 names of Confederate veterans and pend-ing a bit more fundraising, these names will be displayed around the base of the Confederate monument in Heathsville.

Members also were reminded of the upcoming walking history tour at Malvern Hill Battlefield Park this month and Spotsylva-nia Battlefield Park in May.

ROANOKE—The Virginia Daughters of the American Rev-olution recently held its annual state conference at the Hotel Roanoke.

Regent Cheryl Brown Davis, registrar Jude Degen and member Michele Tucker of Cobbs Hall Chapter, joined 132 other Vir-ginia DAR chapters from around the state for workshops, business and a memorial service. The meeting was conducted by state regent Judith Joy Surber.

The Cobbs Hall Chapter brought home 25 state awards or certificates for 2016 according to Davis. Of these, Degen, Anne Wolski and chaplain Joyce Pitt-man were specifically recognized for individual outstanding contri-butions.

Degen was awarded the 2016 Virginia DAR Outstand-ing Volunteer Genealogist, the highest award a DAR registrar can receive, said Davis. Degen also was awarded the Lineage Research Committee’s Outstand-ing Service to Lineage Research Award and the Outstanding Ser-vice-Assigned Volunteer Gene-alogy Certificate. With success-fully processing 19 new member applications in 2016, the chapter was awarded second-place for the number of new members for comparably sized chapters.

Wolski was awarded the State Conference Exceptional Ser-vice for Veterans Award for her outstanding outreach support to veterans. Wolski heads up the chapter’s efforts to provide per-sonal hygiene kits every three months to the McGuire Veteran Hospital in Richmond as well as the ‘Sweats for Vets’ campaign

which provides sweatshirt and pants during the holidays. The chapter also received the Excep-tional Veteran Support Award, said Davis.

Pittman received a second-place award from the Extraor-dinary Service, Dedication & Respect for all Members and Community Committee, contin-ued Davis. This award exempli-fies Pittman’s commitment to support those at times of need.

Largely due to the work of Dotti Vallone, the chapter was presented the Outstanding Con-stitution Week Teamwork Award and four additional state awards related to all the associate Con-stitution Week accomplishments for print coverage, participation with area government’s Constitu-tion proclamations and ringing of churches bells in celebration of our Nation’s independence, she said.

In addition to these awards, the chapter placed first for Service to America with a Chapter all-time high of 11,172 volunteer hours, first for Outstanding Chapter Report on American History and first for Outstanding Media and Print Coverage, said Davis. These three first place State awards makes the chapter eligible for National Awards at Continental Congress later this summer.

Another nine State Awards or Certificates were presented to include a Level I Chapter Achievement Award, State Honor Roll and recognition for work in nature and conservation, support to Stratford Hall, community classroom contributions and out-reach genealogy workshops, she said.
