JELD-WEN Communities

2008

Project Architect & Designer

Named the Community of the Year by Builder Magazine, Brasada Ranch was envisioned as a sustainable resort community that combines environmental stewardship with an attention to design. All of the main buildings in the 1,800 acre development, including the Recreation Center, are designed to LEED Gold Standards. The Sales Center has been awarded LEED Gold Certification, mak-ing it the first resort structure in the country to do so. The Recreation Center includes indoor and outdoor pools, a workout gym, yoga studio, and a children's center. The building is designed around an open central core which houses a smoothie bar, lounge, and fireplace. As project architect, my role was both technical coordination and building design. Working with the project manager we envisioned and developed all major design ideas, from overall massing to material selection and design details. This can be seen in the inventive and expressive use of materials and forms.

Project Manager and Lead Designer

Designed around a central landscape courtyard, the house is both inward and outward. Inward to the private natural oasis and outward to the surrounding views and terraces. The dynamic falling water fea-ture starts at the top of the property and works its way through the site along the path to the home's entry. Like hiking along the many area creeks and streams, guests are carried up to the entrance along the water's rocky edge. The entrance itself is a bridge that links the two volumes of the residence. The glass passage is crossed frequently by the family over the coarse of the day and provides amazing views of the landscape and the ski area above the site. The house is made up of two types of volumes. Gabled pavilions house the important primary spaces including the Living Room, Dining Room and Master Suite. These pavilions are linked and served by shallow-sloped forms which make up the rest of the composition. As project manager, I was responsible for project team management, maintaining the client relationship, and all major design decisions. Beginning with early massing models I led an aggressive design process that included physical models, hand sketches, and computer renderings. This role continued through construction as I clarified con-struction questions, developed additional design details, and insured the proper delivery of the project design.

Design Team (Project Designer)

In the tradition of great neighborhoods, Obermeyer Place, located in the heart of historic Aspen, Colorado, both belongs to its community and distinguishes itself. The design of the 230,000 sq. ft. mixed-use project combines timeless Aspen materials with unexpected contrasts, such as bold projecting balconies and bay windows. Living spaces are open and bright. Alluring architectural elements lead residents down human-scaled streets to sun-filled gathering places with vistas to the mountains beyond. As a member of the project design team, my focus was on the building massing, exte-rior elevations, and the exterior skin detailing. A vigorous design process was applied to all five buildings, each of which is completely unique in scale and form. I developed custom canopies, railings, cornices and brick details.

Mountain Air Country Club and Resort

(Project on Hold)

Job Captain (Project Coordination, Detailing, and Design)

Cottle Graybeal Yaw was hired to develop a new image for Mountain Air, a golf com-munity located in the mountains of North Carolina. Focusing on creating a sense of community, our design team developed a new village 'heart' with a mountain lodge, children's chautauqua center, and a village green for gathering and special events. The Cooper's Ridge Project was designed as a three unit multi-family dwelling that would be both a part of the overall community and also allow the families to quietly enjoy their mountain setting. Using local materials and building forms the homes create a sense of harmony with the immediate surroundings. Despite placing the residential portion of the project on hold, the Mountain Air village projects that were completed have received design citations and significantly boosted home sales and new memberships.

Deep Creek Development

On-going

Project Architect and Designer

CCY Architects was hired by Deep Creek Development to revitalize the existing resort through the design and planning of a series of new projects. These projects included a new mountain-top village built around the ski area and a new whitewater park, a clubhouse and golf facility for the new Hale Irwin designed Lodestone golf course, and a 22,000 s.f. lakeside marina club. In addition, we designed a number of residen-tial prototypes to be used throughout the resort. The mountain top village design was based on the historic camps of the Adirondacks. The village core is made up of mostly one and two-story structures. By keeping the structures at this scale, the village maintains the camp-like feel. As one moves away from the core, the residential buildings slowly grow to more than six stories. My role in the village was to lead the conceptual design of the key buildings including the main lodge, the ski school building, and the resort spa. I also worked closely with the landscape architects to direct the overall plan and choreography.

club

The Lakeside Club at Deep Creek Resort

The Deep Creek Lakeside Club provides boat slips and storage as well as dining and leisure benefits to its members. Membership also provides access to other resort amenities in the mountain village. Due to its tight site, the club also includes structured parking and is connected to a series of new luxury condominiums across the adjacent county road. All of these buildings have spectacular views of the lake and the ski area beyond. As lead project designer I directed the overall design direction. This meant developing multiple schemes and concepts as well as insuring that all design decisions met our established approach.

Deep Creek Resort - Lodestone Golf Club

As the centerpiece of the new resort expansion, the Lodestone Golf Club is designed to be the premier facility in the region. The course was designed by U.S. open champion Hale Irwin in association with Todd Schoeder from Design Workshop. Located on top of Marsh Mountain above Deep Creek Lake, the course winds through the mountainous terrain opening up views to the surrounding region. The clubhouse compound includes a proshop, locker facilities with massage rooms and members lounges, and restaurant and bar. All of the main structures are connected by covered walkways and enclosed porches creating a camp-like environment. From the early planning stages I directed the design staff and pro-duced computer models and design concepts. This also included many presentation drawings and renderings for client reviews.

On Hold

The main living volume of the house is defined by a glass box. In order to alleviate the impact of sun exposure and subsequent heat gain, we devised a vertical glass fin system. This was necessary to reduce the invasive west sun since the build-ing is not oriented north-south. To further complicate the design, we incorporated one-piece hydraulic doors to completely open the walls of the kitchen and sitting room automatically. This not only eliminates the separation of interior and exterior space, but it virtually expands these spaces by providing a trellis-like structureon the exterior. The use of glass is carried to the interior where it is used for railings, partitions and floor panels. With the addition of poured-in-place concrete walls the material palette of the house is akin to an art museum, which was encouraged by the client who is an avid art collector.

Studio B released from project

Project Manager and Lead Designer

Designed for a prominent family in Chicago, the project is a dialogue of wall, skin and porosity. The meandering walls organize the interior and exterior spaces and create a buffer from the nearby country road. In addition, the walls help enclose the sound and energy of the creek below. The building skins define the two main volumes. One volume is encased in a solid steel panel exo-skeleton, the other in local stone. These skins are broken and punctured to allow for natural lighting and access to the surrounding mountain views.I was specifically hired by Studio B to manage and design this important commis-sion. Based on early conceptual sketches, I developed numerous plan and massing schemes as well as structural and material concepts. I also directed the design team in the production of many computer and physical models.

Fall 2004

Project Designer

Designed on the idea of service and served spaces, the Ryan Residence is made up of stone service masses that anchor the home's primary spaces. These areas open up to the immediate landscape and the views in the distance through large expanses of glass. The roof forms are simple curves which keep the building height low and provide counterpoint to the flat-roofed service spaces.A natural stream cuts through the middle of the site and becomes a central focus of the design. Visitors are greeted by the stream as they arrive to the home and are brought to the entrance along the edge of the moving water. On the far side of the property the house also borders the slopes of Snowmass Mountain Resort. This pro-vides easy access for the owners to the new base village just down the hill.As a key member of the conceptual design team I helped produce study models, design sketches and overall design concepts. I also assisted in client presentations.

Project Designer

Located on the side of a mountain overlooking the Park City valley, the home was designed as a retreat and artist's studio. For privacy and to hide its actual size, the residence was sunken into the hillside exposing only the studio on the uphill side. This keeps the scale down at the entrance but allows for the rest of the house to cascade down the slope.

Under Construction

Project Manager & Lead Designer

Designed for a local business owner, the house needed to be budget-conscious and built in a short period of time. These constraints led to the decision to design the house for modular construction. The project site is part of a historic lot split which allows an owner of a historic property to divide their land into two parcels. This process helps to give incentives to owners whose property is otherwise limited in improvement options. Due to the split the building envelope for the property was very constrained. This lim-ited the options for the basic building form and determined the overall spacial layout. The ground level contains the garage and the master suite along with the main entry. In order to provide access to the dramatic mountain views, the main living spaces are located on the second level with access to above-grade decks (including a roof deck). The open floor plan allows the family to enjoy different activities while being together.

On Hold

Project Manager / Project Designer

Designed for a local community college in rural Colorado, the facility needed to house a wide range of vocational curricula, from Cosmetology and Massage Therapy to Mine Safety and Industrial Electrician Training. The design challenge for this project was to house such diverse building functions under a single roof and meet the limited project budget. The design solution responds to these challenges by simplifying the structural systems and using economical materials in creative ways. In order to reduce the interior lighting load and meet state environmental standards similar to LEED, a large volume of the building was clad with translucent polycarbonate panels. This would allow a significant amount of light to enter the building and still provide the required thermal envelope. In the evening these panels would also create a subtle glow like a lighthouse for the college campus.
