Scott of Greenock in 1826, the 290 ton barque Hanover wasone of a small fleet of eight vessels built over the years for theWest Indian sugar traders Stirling & Gordon of Glasgow, making many round trips to Jamaica. Hanover served heroriginal owners until 1843, when she was sold to W. Blues ofLeith for their Africa trade. By 1846 she was transferred toHalket & Co. of London and was absent from Lloyd's Registerby 1848. An earlier painting by Clark dated for 1830 depictsHanover arriving in the Clyde just as her consort, the Christian, departs. Literature: A.S. Lot: 17OLIVIER LE MAY (1734-1797) An English Squadron of the Redencountering multiple water spouts, probably off Gibraltar, whilst in pursuit of a Spanish armed merchantman Signed 'O LeMay' (lower left on stern of principal two-decker) Oil on canvas19½ x 29in. (49.5 x 73.7cm.) This intriguing scene undoubtedlyrecords an incident which has yet to be properly identified.Frustratingly, the artist has signed the picture where the mostobvious clue - the vessel's name - might have been put. However, the vessel apparently aground under the headland, isflying a white flag with a red saltire - although Ireland was notfully part of the Union of Great Britain at that time, neither didshe maintain a significant navy, merchant or otherwise; Themost likely candidate would seem to be the "Ragged Cross"flag. This 'Cross of Burgundy' as it is also known, was in use asthe Spanish naval ensign between 1506-1701, and as aBiscayan merchant ensign between 1511 and 1830. If this isindeed a Spanish armed merchantman run ashore by Britishvessels intent on booty, there are several Wars which wouldhave provided them with a suitable excuse, however thelooming headland in the middle distance looks distinctly like thefamous Rock of Gibraltar which has served as a notorious flash-point between Great Britain and Spain ever since it was handedover in perpetuity by the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713. Her original designation was to have been P213 but there wasresistance against having an unlucky '13' in the number, so shebecame P247 - which still added up to 13. She was namedSaracen in January 1943 and was issued with a named bell(this lot, which has many strike marks, becoming redundant). Her short career started auspiciously when she sank U335 inthe North Sea on 3rd August 1942 - one of the two survivorsdied when he refused to be rescued. Latterly she sank theItalian submarine Granito, the sub-chaser Maria Angelette andseveral axis merchantmen and convoys. Her end came on 14thAugust 1943 when, cruising off Bastia, Italy, she was spotted bythe Italian corvettes Minerva and Euterpe who promptly depth-charged her. Forced to the surface, her crew evacuated andscuttled her to prevent capture. After a day of talksthey were imprisoned and tortured, resulting in about twentydeaths - the bodies almost unrecognisable. To deter theChinese from using kidnap as a bargaining tool again, LordElgin, the British High Commissioner to China, reacted byordering the destruction of the Old Summer Palace, which wascarried out on October 18th by 3,500 British and French troopsand took three days to set the whole complex ablaze. Dr.Duckett was aboard one of the ships carrying marines whichassisted and where he acquired this lot. Charles Gordon, acontemporary officer in the Royal Engineers, gives a flavour ofthe episode: We went out, and, after pillaging it, burned thewhole place, destroying in a vandal-like manner most valuableproperty which [could] not be replaced for four millions. We gotupward of £48 apiece prize money...I have done well. The[local] people are very civil, but I think the grandees hate us, asthey must after what we did the Palace. You can scarcelyimagine the beauty and magnificence of the places we burnt. Itmade one's heart sore to burn them; in fact, these places wereso large, and we were so pressed for time, that we could notplunder them carefully. Quantities of gold ornaments wereburnt, considered as brass. It was wretchedly demoralisingwork for an army. I suspect the French frigates have been escorted by theRussians.. ...No account yet of the French fleet - I shalltherefore proceed of cape Sapienza for a few days and gettingto advise of them return to the coast of Sicily.. (2/1/1808); laterthat year: A Portuguese boat from the Nilia Real, and brot.[sic]information that on the 13th July a numerous Body ofPortuguese 7 Spaniards attacked the French at Lisbon - theycontinued the assault for 6 days.. (3/8/1808); continuing withsimilar content and ending with an interesting account of theBattle of the Roses: ..the Enemy is in possession of some ofthe end works - in this town is a Military company of women - of260 called the Company of St. Barbara - armed and doing dutyon the Garrison - they are Commanded by a Lady of fashion, the officers are women of quality - this [illegible] Corps isdistinguished for its gallantry -- (10/12/1809), bound betweenoriginal vellum boards inscribed on cover -- 7½ x 6½in. (19 x16.5cm.) Manuscripts by Collingwood are comparatively rarewhen considered in light of his great friend Nelson'sphenomenal output. He was a succinct man who rarely usedtwo words when one would do, which means that this littlevolume is packed with interesting detail and shows just what afraught place the Mediterranean was at this date. Little wonderthat Collingwood never set foot in Britain again after the Battleof Trafalgar - there was simply no let-up in the various intriguesarising from the continuing Wars with France and Spain, andCollingwood was occupied in important political and diplomatictransactions in the Mediterranean, in which he displayed tactand judgement. His health began to decline alarmingly in 1809and he repeatedly requested the Admiralty to allow him toreturn home, which was finally granted. Collingwood died onboard the Ville de Paris, off Port Mahon as he sailed forEngland, on 7 March 1810. He was laid to rest next to Nelson inthe crypt of St Paul's Cathedral. Davies;the Victory fully modelled in fruit and box woods with plankedhull copper sheathed below the waterline, contrasting black andyellow hull with open gun ports on upper two decks with gunsfitted with red tompions run out forward, the latter ports glazed, finely carved head-piece, glazed stern and quarter gallerieswith internal fittings visible, planked decks and bound mastswith standing and running rigging of correct weight, yards andstun's'l booms, flying the signal to 'unmoor' from the mizzenmast, the decks crowded with numerous crew and officersundertaking tasks including furling sails, stowing anchor ropes, preparing to raise an approaching pinnace, with a company ofmarines being drilled, the poop deck with Nelson pointing andHardy watching as Pascoe stows signal flags, the wholemounted in a 6in. deep rippled green glass sea with paintedwhite flecking, a pinnace with ten oarsmen, two officers and amarine approaching, contained in a bespoke glazed case withbackdrop and stern views painted by Geoff Hunt showing theheadland and rest of squadron, internal electric lighting, dusttrap and legend to front, mounted on tapering legs.Measurements overall -- 75 x 53½ x 26in. (190.5 x 136 x 66cm.);framed charts of location and description of activities; servicetable (5) Born of a frustration with the inadequacies of somemodels to show the Victory accurately enough and to put it intoan interesting moment of history, this model evolved into whatis possibly the most complex and detailed presentation of thisfamous ship yet undertaken. Log books and site visits wereused to determine Victory's precise anchorage at this date, from which photographs and period pictures were used byrenowned marine artist Geoff Hunt to provide the backdropcanvases; detailed discussions with historians and the curatorof H.M.S. Victory were undertaken to extraordinary degrees toestablish precisely the arrangement of the vessel at this date -there was a small refit before the Battle of Trafalgar whichprovided additional challenges. Three years of trials were takenwith the sea to get it realistic. It is uniquely poured around thehull to conform to the modeller's wishes to create the correctlight refraction, so the hull and anchor cable look as they didwhen Nelson gave the order to set sail. The success of thevignettes on the deck, in the rigging and the pinnace is a rareachievement with very few models so successfully employingthis detail. To preserve the model for posterity, the modellerdesigned an airtight case with temperature-controlled climateand a dust trap on top, however should anything ever comeastray, full instructions on how to access it are provided alongwith a table of the right height to slide the model on. Lot: 262A FINE AND WELL-PRESENTED 1:48 SCALE STATICDISPLAY MODEL OF THE WORLD'S FIRST TURBINE-POWERED CRAFT TURBINIA DESIGNED BY SIR CHARLESPARSONS IN 1894 modelled by John R. Haynes with bespokepre-formed hull, painted deck with superstructure and fittings asappropriate and including anchor, winch, glazed wheel housewith steering wires to aft rudder shoe, deck rails with named lifebuoys, raked buff-coloured funnel, engine room companionwayand observation post, fitted dinghy with gratings, oars etc, thetwo-tone hull fitted with three propeller shafts each supportedthree brass propellers, mounted on brass columns withinwooden glazed case with maker's plate. Cased measurements -- 9¾ x 31 x 6in. (25 x 79 x 15cm.) Turnbinia was designed bySir Charles Parsons, inventor and builder of Parsons turbines. She was built by him in 1894 to test Parsons turbines in serviceand to demonstrate the advantages of turbine vs reciprocatingengine propulsion. Naturally, the fastest type of craft should beused for such demonstrations. It was a sad blow when, powered by one radial flow turbine, Turbinia made less than 20knots due to cavitation at the high turbine speeds of 1800-2000RPM. Parsons made many studies of cavitation. The singleturbine was removed and replaced by three Parsons parallel-flow turbines, each driving a shaft with three propellers on eachshaft as clearly seen in this model. The Royal Naval Reviewfor Queen Victoria's Jubilee took place at the Spithead in 1897.With all the ships of the Navy, guest vessels, and huge crowdslooking on, the tiny (comparatively) Turbinia ripped through therows of cumbersome naval vessels at an astonishing 35 knots. This bravado display effectively demonstrated beyond questionthe superiority of steam turbines, and in a very short timesuccessful turbine installations had been made and put inservice on coastal steamers. The Cunard Line experimentedwith turbines in the 20,000 ton Carmania, and then entrustedturbines to their Mauretania and Lusitania. Both ships becameworld famous, the former holding the transatlantic speed recordfrom 1910 to 1929. Turbinia was solely a demonstration vessel

to show, as she certainly did, the advantages of turbine drive. Her weight of 44½ tons divided by her horsepower gave a verylow 49 pounds per horsepower, only to be surpassed five yearslater by the American Arrow which, even with reciprocatingengines, achieved a figure of 36 pounds per horsepower. Shortly after being photographed alongside the Mauretania, thefirst large, fast, turbine powered ocean liner, she was laid up onthe Tyne. Her after part was retired to exhibition in 1927 in theImperial Science Museum in London. In 1961 both halves wererejoined in Newcastle on Tyne where she can now be seen. She tookpart in Villeneuve's West Indies expedition in May/June 1805,and fought at Calder's Action on her return that July. Howeverher most glorious (and final) action was at Trafalgar. Captainedby the bluff-but-experienced Louis Infernet (who had assumedcommand in August), she formed part of Vice AdmiralDumanoir's van squadron. Attempting to relieve the pressureon Villeneuve's centre, L'Intrépide was the only one of ten shipsthat sailed straight for the mêlée and, during two hours ofintense fighting, engaged seven or eight British ships, on oneoccasion coming under fire from four or five simultaneously.Incredibly Infernet came through unscathed, however 242 of his745 crew were casualties, and ultimately dismasted with herrudder shot away and wheel smashed they were "obliged toyield" as Infernet put it. During the severe storms that followedthe action it proved impossible to preserve all the prizes andL'Intrépide was burnt on Collingwood's orders. Six months laterInfernet returned to France as part of a prisoner exchange andwas awarded the Grande Croix Légion d'Honneur by Napoleonand is one of the few French naval officers to have his namecarved in the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. As one of the mostillustrious French vessels at Trafalgar, it is not surprising thatthe prisoner who made this model felt secure enough to nameit, as Lt. Senhouse of the Conqueror commented afterwards, she put up one of the most gallant defences I have everwitnessed and would have been a viable commercial prospectin an age when heroic gallantry counted for as much, if notmore, than the cause in which it was deployed.
