Mario Possati founded Marposs in 1952. Since its inception, Marposs has been producing standard and custom systems for industrial applications to measure and control dimensions, geometries and surface quality of mechanical components and for control and monitoring of the machining process. Marposs engineers work with both end users and machine tool makers, from the development stage of a project through implementation and long-term service support. Application solutions are obtained with standard or engineered products and cover all requirements from the immediate control of the machine tool, to the final inspection of the finished pieces and to the collection and statistical interpretation of the measurement data. Marposs was established in Bologna in 1952 by Mr Mario Possati (1922-1990).

The idea behind the company was to manufacture and market innovative electronic gauging equipment for use during grinding.Electronics was a very new technology at the time, without previous uses in a workshop environment, but it allowed much better performance compared to existing products.The technology required a few years of research and testing to guarantee the overall reliability that the market demanded, but once this objective was reached, the product soon caught on and became increasingly successful.

In the early sixties, as well as consolidating its sales presence, Marposs acquired the necessary structural strength to confidently look at future developments.As it was back then, Italy continues to be a sizeable exporter of machine tools. This put Marposs in the difficult situation of guaranteeing technical and after-sales support in the countries importing Italian machine tools.The company, therefore, decided to open offices in some of the most important countries: Germany (1962), Switzerland (1963) and United States (1963). In 1970, after 18 years of business, Marposs opened its first office in Japan; this marked the beginning of its penetration into the Asian market.

Today Germany, Japan and the United States are, along with China, still Marposs’ most important markets. Marposs now boasts its own Sales and Technical Support companies in 24 countries with 80 offices. A further 9 countries benefit from dedicated networks of Agents and Dealers.

The company headquarters is in Bentivoglio (Bologna), in the heart of the Italian industrial area.The headquarters coordinates all the activities of the entire company and is the location of central R&D, marketing, design and production.

After the year 2000 Marposs began a program to acquire solid, well-structured companies, each able to supply a top-quality product in its field. As a whole, today the companies of the Marposs Group can supply a wide range of equipment for quality control in production environment.

All of these companies were leaders in their field, but operated within local areas; by joining Marposs Group, now they can take a great benefit from the worldwide presence of Marposs, with its capillary sales and service network able to reach customers anywhere. These acquisitions have given Marposs the ability to expand the range of products and solutions, thus enhancing the capability to satisfy customers’ needs.

Today the whole group has about 2800 direct employees. 1070 work at the Italian headquarters and the other Italian premises, 600 in the rest of Europe, 300 in America and 850 in Asia.

THE GROUP

Millennium Automation Inc., founded in 1996 and located in the heart of the Silicon Valley in California, was in business with the Hard Disk Drive (HDD) industry and electronic industry in general. In January 2000 Marposs acquired Millennium to enter that promising market.All of the main producers of HDD found an immediate advantage from

the experience in metrology and quality control that Marposs brought inside Millennium, and the Marposs solution became a de-facto standard for the metrology requirements of all the HDD industry.Thanks to the worldwide diffusion of the Marposs sales and after sales service organization, it was easy to satisfy the requirements of the HDD market in the Asian countries, giving customers a great sense of confidence.

MG S.p.A., established in 1954 near Brescia, Italy, specializing in attribute gauges (go - no go), mechanical measuring systems, leak testing and functional inspection machines, became part of

the Marposs group in June 2000. At the time, Marposs was already a market leader in the field of variable gauges all over the world, but was almost absent in the sector of attribute gauges; on the other hand, MG was a leader of attribute gauges in the Italian market. Joining Marposs, MG could expand its market to a worldwide dimension and Marposs, adding MG products, could benefit from a significant product range enlargement.

COMPANIESOF THE GROUP

Trace S.A.S., a French company founded in 1984, leader in Europe for leak test systems and well-known for its cutting-edge technology in helium applications, was acquired in September 2006. The acquisition allowed to consolidate Marposs presence in this strategic field.

Kern S.A.S., a French company established in 1954, recognized as a reliable supplier in the

automotive and aerospace sectors, was acquired by Marposs in January 2008 and integrated in the group with the purpose to increase Marposs presence in the strategic market of the aerospace industry.

The synergy between Trace, Kern and Marposs products has also allowed to widen the range of applications that can be offered to the automotive market, one of the traditional pillars of Marposs business.Trace and Kern have been located in the new Marposs SAS plant in Chelles since the end of 2012.

Control Gaging Inc., located in the USA in Ann Arbor, MI, was founded in 1974 and was a tough competitor on the American market in responding to

some specific needs of the grinder industry with innovative gauging solutions.The Control Gaging acquisition by Marposs in October 2007 offered the great opportunity to integrate Marposs in-process and post-process products, thus creating an incomparable range of solutions for nearly any application requirement.

Artis GmbH, established in 1983 and located in Egestorf, Germany, was acknowledged as a main player in tool, process and machine monitoring and adaptive control. Marposs was not present in this specific sector and, in the continuous effort to offer customers the most complete range of solutions, was interested to enter this

business and immediately acquire a position in the market. With this target, Artis was acquired by Marposs in October 2008, allowing its traditional customers to have more instruments to increase productivity and decrease total life cycle costs of machine tools.

Helium Technology S.r.l. was established in 2010 near Pavia, Italy, to answer to the growing requirements for leak test systems using helium mass spectrometer technology in strategic industries as refrigeration, pharmaceutical, food.

Metrel S.p.A., founded in 1975 and located near Milan, Italy, has gained the experience and know-how to satisfy all measurement requirements in mass production of precision mechanical parts, mostly in the automotive and aerospace industries, offering the best balance between cost and performance. Mechanical and electronic design are all performed within its premises, as well as machining, assembly and inspection.

Brankamp GmbH, established in 1977 near Düsseldorf, Germany, develops, manufactures and markets systems for machining process monitoring for various

machine types and industry sectors. It makes a wide range of solutions for applications on metal cutting machines as well as on deformation machines, for press and forming processes.Brankamp’s market-leading solutions are primarily used in the automotive industry, as well as in other industrial sectors, to prevent process errors, provide support for quicker machine set-up and to eliminate or limit costly damages. The over 50,000 systems installed worldwide help Brankamp’s customers increase productivity and decrease total life cycle costs of machine tools.

Dittel Messtechnik GmbH, located in Landsberg am Lech, near Munich, Germany, was founded in 1959 to develop and manufacture aeronautical devices, and has been classified by the German Aviation Authority (LBA) as a certified developer and supplier. Today, the core competencies lie in

the development and manufacture of intelligent, comprehensive process monitoring and control solutions for use in machine tools, with main focus on grinders, and their components. For over 50 years, the name Dittel has stood for precision, quality and reliability in the metalworking industry.

The headquarters facilities are in Bentivoglio, about ten kilometers north of Bologna, Italy.

The headquarters consists of three factories set side by side, plus other service buildings (an internal restaurant and technological centers).The total covered space measures 38 000 sq.m., surrounded by 30 000 sq.m. of gardens plus yards and parking lot.Internal to the main facility are 14 green, open-air atriums that are each 100 sq.m. in size. These areas work to enlighten and decorate the office area.

The working area is an open architecture without fixed dividing walls. This concept facilitates easier area reconfiguration according to changing needs.

HEADQUARTERS

The manufacturing organization in the headquarters has two major components:- the Product Manufacturing Center which produces standard equipment- the Special Application Manufacturing Center, which produces customized systems to be integrated into customers’ facilities.

Both Manufacturing Centers work in close cooperation with the R&D department and with the three commercial divisions:- the Machine Tool Division operates in the world of measurement and control on machine tools- the Standard Products Division works in the field of standard gauges and components for the

gauge makers- the Special Applications Division covers the area of customized gauging stations (manual

benches and automatic machines) tailored to the specific customers’ requests.

DIVISIONS AND MANUFACTURING

Research and development are the lifeblood of the constant technological innovation that characterizes today’s global manufacturing community.Recognizing this, Marposs invests approximately 10% of its revenue in Research and Development and participates with a number of partners in international research programs.The productivity of these efforts is enhanced by many years of real-world experience which helps

Marposs efficiently identify and pursue the most promising new technologies.Marposs’ Research and Development Centers synthesize the knowledge gained from both customer applications and Marposs’ own internal operations and applies it to the ongoing basic research.All Marposs gauging solutions (mechanical, air-electronic, contact-electronic, optical) have their origins in the Research and Development Centers, and so will the advanced new technologies which eventually will replace them.This continuous improvement is necessary to allow Marposs to maintain its leadership in the world for gauging systems engineering.

RESEARCH &DEVELOPMENT(R&D)

Test labTesting of extreme environmental conditions, life test and material verifications are performed to ensure and improve the product quality.The Marposs Test Laboratory is qualified by the presence of a skilled staff, controlled environmental conditions and a variety of equipment like a scanning electron microscope (SEM) with EDS probe, several benches for endurance test (shakers) and reliability test (life test), climatic rooms for thermal and humidity tests, a chamber for resistance to corrosion test and more specific systems.

EMC test labThe electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) test lab can check the compliance with national and international standards and legal requirements.

The lab is equipped with an anechoic room that allows compliance verifications at all the stages of a product development, especially during the design and production monitoring.Furthermore the lab cooperates with several certification organizations for what concerns radio emitting device validation.

TEST LABS

In its manufacturing sites Marposs has several metrology laboratories, accredited as calibration centers: the most important labs are in Marposs headquarters in Bentivoglio (150 sq. m.) and in MG manufacturing center in Brescia (three labs for a total of 440 sq. m.); also the recently established MNA manufacturing center in Nanjing has a well equipped 110 sq. m. lab.All the room floors are separated from the rest of the building and/or lay on anti-vibration bearings; the rooms are in a slight overpressure to keep dust out and are controlled within 20°C ± 0.3°C (or even ± 0.2°C in some labs) and relative humidity 50% ± 10%.The labs are equipped with 3D CMM’s, height gauges, Abbe universal length measuring

machines, roundness and shape measuring machines, CMM gear testing machines, master scanners, roughness and surface testers, durometers and other high precision instruments, all used to certify:- reference standards (masters) used to calibrate Marposs gauges- sample parts used for metrological tests during the gauge run off- thread gauges, spline and master gears sold for go - no go checks.

METROLOGY LABS

The provision for maintenance and maintenance support is a key element in ensuring the dependability of items (products, equipment and systems) throughout their life cycle.

Intended functionality, capability and dependability performance are achieved by providing the necessary maintenance and maintenance support in conjunction with appropriate design (in terms of functionality, reliability and maintainability), quality manufacturing and sound operating practices.

Marposs after-sales organization is present all over the world in about 80 centers to be conveniently close to the customers’ plants to minimize downtime of production lines; it accounts for approx 300 service engineers, mostly native, to assure the best possible understanding of customers’ needs, qualified to provide the maintenance and maintenance support required.

PRODUCT QUALITY AND AFTER-SALES SERVICE

Training is one of the fundamental elements of the company philosophy.Both internal and external technicians are thoroughly trained in all aspects of product knowledge and application skills. Managers are trained in both technology and business issues, as well as interpersonal relations and behavior skills. An in-house recording studio produces multimedia tools which are used to disseminate information on technology, products and processes.

EDUCATION& TRAINING

An advanced information system, optimized for data transmission among the various distribution centers through an intercontinental network, allows Marposs to manage all the sectors of the company in an integrated manner. Proposals, orders, distributed inventories, customer specifications, application data and field problems flow through a worldwide network of servers allowing efficient interaction of geographically distributed workgroups.The data necessary for a global scale management are collected and processed by a corporate data center which houses an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) fully integrated with the engineering and manufacturing systems.

INFORMATIONTECHNOLOGY(IT)

Marposs has always operated a comprehensive environmental protection policy, not only complying with directives and regulations, but also implementing voluntary initiatives since long before the ambient safeguard laws came into force.An excellent example is its purification system for the factory wastewater: a harmoniously functioning eco-system, which uses a natural method to clean wastewater by means of hydrophonic plants that reduce levels of nitrates and phosphates, which are the main causes of water eutrophication. For this project, realized in the early 90’s, Marposs received the ERA environmental award in 1995 from Emilia-Romagna Region.
