MARIO CASTELNUOVO-TEDESCO: VIOLIN CONCERTO NO.2, Op.66 “I pROfETI”
(“ThE pROphETS”) pAUL BEN-hAIM: VIOLIN CONCERTO
This recording is further proof of the close connection Itzhak
Perlman feels both to music steeped in Jewish tradition and to the
repertoire introduced to him by Jascha Heifetz. As he himself has
often recalled, listening to Heifetz as a teenager made him want to
play the works championed by his illustrious elder and predecessor,
whether it was those of Sinding (volume 21), Korngold and Conus
(volume 27), or this concerto by Castelnuovo-Tedesco. “I profeti”
(The Prophets) was dedicated to Jascha Heifetz, who had given its
premiere in 1933 under the baton of Toscanini. Six years
later, its composer was driven into exile in the US as new
anti-Semitic legislation came into force in his native Italy.
According to Castelnuovo-Tedesco, the concerto, with its episodes
of exaltation, heroism, mystery and lamentations drawn from ancient
Jewish sources, evokes “the glorious voices of the prophets of the
past, whose eloquence rose above the voices of the people and those
of nature”. Perlman brings out its intensity with passionate
lyricism and compelling introversion. His absolute focus and the
brio of his playing on this live recording are a worthy match for
the legendary studio version recorded by Heifetz in 1954 under the
baton of Alfred Wallenstein. Here, Zubin Mehta inspires a sparkling
dynamism from the Israel Philharmonic, creating a vibrant, vivid
atmosphere redolent of that of a film soundtrack. Paul Ben-Haim,
born Paul Frankenburger, began his musical career as a conductor,
working under Bruno Walter and Hans
Knappertsbusch in Munich, but left Nazi Germany in 1933 for
Palestine. He wrote a sizeable quantity of orchestral music, works
which reveal an original fusion between German Romanticism and the
charms of Middle Eastern music. Like the Castelnuovo-Tedesco, his
Violin Concerto is built on the Classical model and takes most of
its inspiration from Jewish themes, thus continuing, to a certain
extent, the tradition established by Bruch’s Kol Nidrei and Bloch’s
Schelomo. The writing exploits both the emotional depths of the
solo instrument and its virtuosic potential, two areas in which
Perlman is entirely at home, expressing the work’s colourful
rhythms and meditative pathos with verve and sincerity.

MARIO CASTELNUOVO-TEDESCO : CONCERTO pOUR VIOLON N° 2
Op. 66 “I pROfETI” (“LES pROphÈTES”) pAUL BEN-hAIM : CONCERTO

MARIO CASTELNUOVO-TEDESCO: VIOLINkONzERT NR. 2 Op. 66 “I
pROfETI” (“DIE pROphETEN”) pAUL BEN-hAIM: VIOLINkONzERT
Wallenstein aufzeichnete.
