In a year of market shocks that put many sectors of the Marine & Offshore industries under severe pressure while others enjoyed an unexpected boom, the key qualities needed by operators were resilience and agility. Resilience to maintain quality of operations while drastically reducing costs, and agility to change course and move into areas offering better prospects. Throughout the turbulence Bureau Veritas was a steadfast partner, helping companies under stress maintain quality while smoothing the way for those who were able to move into new markets. But we did not let the current choppy waters divert us from looking ahead, notably by investing in digitalization to support companies with better and faster services in the future.
Throughout the turbulence in 2015, Bureau Veritas
was a steadfast partner, helping companies under
stress maintain quality while smoothing the way for those who were able
to move into new markets.

Marine & Offshore WorldwidePresence
The falling oil price and volatile freight rates changed markets right across the globe during 2015. Those changes created opportunities for some and risks for others. Bureau Veritas strengthened and widened its network and increased the services available locally in every part of the world to ensure it could offer the right support at the right place. That meant more focus on OPEX services in areas with abundant offshore energy, more focus on LNG fuel in areas with tighter air emission rules and more focus on tailored services for shipowners under financial pressure. And more focus everywhere on deploying advanced technology to deliver the exact service needed.

Damen is an international shipyard group with a simple philosophy. We deliver tried and tested designs
of competitively priced and innovative vessels by listening to the customer’s needs. Since we developed the AXE bow concept with Delft University high speed craft have been an extremely good growth area for the group. We had a record order book last year and I see a strong future for patrol craft. High speed craft need special solutions and that is why Bureau Veritas is our class of choice. They are strict but they are willing to listen to us and work with us not against us.

École Centrale Nantes is one of the major French Schools of Engineering, home to the main French laboratory on marine hydrodynamics.
Building on the acquisition of HydrOcean by Bureau Veritas, we created a 10-year international research chair programme on hydrodynamics. We will jointly develop and assess numerical methods to study hydrodynamic and coupled hydro-structural problems related to ship performance and safety. I am also working with Bureau Veritas and other industrial partners on other collaborative projects related to using CFD in the marine environment. Bureau Veritas is a major partner and the collaboration is very fruitful. We have made many advances which will be much increased with the new chair programme.

MARine ACTiViTies
Bureau Veritas grew its classed fleet in 2015, and also grew its range of services, helping smooth the path of every area of marine endeavor. The classed fleet grew by 5.5m GT, or 370 ships, as owners voted with their tonnage to take advantage of the global network and expertise we deliver in every sector of shipping. The introduction of CFD into many services and moves towards a digital platform, coupled with the spread of lean management techniques, continually speeded service delivery to cut costs for owners and yards.

LDA is a French family-owned group and a shipowner active in maritime transportation and services. We offer
our clients tailor-made maritime solutions and integrated services. Our forward strategy is to maintain a high level of adaptability thanks to our know-how, our commitments, our reactivity and innovation. In 2015 we finished the construction of a series of eight Handymax and two Capesize bulk carriers. Bureau Veritas was the classification society of these newbuildings. We always use them as classification society because we have close relationships which allow us to solve technical issues quickly, we benefited from strong support of Bureau Veritas China for our own site survey team and, for bulk carriers, we have strong confidence in the application of CSR rules due to Bureau Veritas’ deep involvement in CSR rules elaboration.

New Times Shipbuilding Co is one of China’s top five yards, but it is not sheer size which sets New Times
apart. It is new thinking. We have grown quickly. We did that by always striving to be the best, to deliver quality when perhaps others looked at quantity, and by looking always for where the market was going, not where it is. We deliver environmentally friendly, economic, high quality vessels. Our cooperation with Bureau Veritas began many years ago and our close relationship is continuously strengthened not only through classed new building ships but also on R&D projects and close technical contacts on the development of new rules and regulations. New Times has recently built a series of 10,600 teu container ships to BV class.

We are a unique shipping company almostentirely owned by our employees, it givesus a special dimension. We want to be the
most open and transparent company in shipping.Tankers are very much our core business and we will grow that, but we are also eyeing opportunities in the difficult dry bulk sector. We class all our fleet with Bureau Veritas and last year we were busy together as we took four newbuildings and had eight special surveys with them. We choose Bureau Veritas on the basis of trust, quality and cost. We benchmark them and challenge them continuously and I can say we are satisfied it was the right choice.

IN BV CLASS
Multraship operates a large, modern fleet of tugs, self-propelled floating sheerlegs, diving support vessels and other units. Our simple aim is to
provide the best possible service, taking pride in our commitment to respond - rapidly and competitively - to the needs of our clients. This year we have ordered two evolutionary Carrousel Rave Tugs (CRTs) from Damen Shipyards Group. These new vessels will provide tug operators with more power, more freedom and more durability, as well as eliminating the risk of capsizing under a tow load. We chose Bureau Veritas to class these innovative tugs because they share our values.
global growth andinnovation
During 2015, Bureau Veritas’ inland navigation business grew both in termsof the diversified types of vessels classed and the wide geographical area covered,
with confirmed leadership in Eastern Europe and South America.

Touax group owns and manages river barges, rail cars and sea-containers all around
the world and today manages a fleet of 125 vessels on the main European, North and South American rivers. Our strategy is to provide our customers operational and financial solutions in short- or long-term leasing contracts. We chose BV class for our barges because it is the reference for classification of inland vessels. We are sure that the quality of our barges is guaranteed by the Bureau Veritas process. We also want to show our customers that they can be confident about the barges they rent to us. It is always a pleasure to work with Bureau Veritas people because they are happy to be helpful.

Building thebunkerchain
Despite the clean and green advantages of gas as a fuel uptake of LNG was held back during 2015 by fears over availability and cost. Bureau Veritas worked
hard with suppliers to develop the first LNG bunker barges and to help owners and yards who want their ships to be gas-ready but not move to gas yet.

We deliver high quality services in the offshore, towage and accommodation vessels sectors worldwide. We pride ourselves on the quality
of our crews and our innovation. We are happy to be leaders in developing dual-fuel escort tugs. Our three dual-fuel escort tugs building in Spain to the RAstar 4000 DF design will have an LNG installation provided by Wärtsilä. They will operate at Statoil’s LNG terminal near Hammerfest, handy for LNG supply and delivering a green profile. We chose BV class because they have the experience and a cost-effective package. We did a good Hazop on the LNG and the co-operation is working very well so far.

focus switches toOpex
The low oil price stopped most new projects for offshore oil exploitation in their tracks. However there was continued interest in floating solutions for LNG and those projects already underway continued. Operators switched their focus strongly towards controlling operating costs.
Excelerate Energy L.P. is the market leader in innovative floating LNG solutions. It provides integrated services along the entire LNG value
chain to deliver rapid-to-market and reliable LNG solutions. Excelerate controls a fleet of ten LNG ships that include a traditional LNG carrier and nine Excelerate Energy Bridge® brand FSRUs. We are bullish for the regas market. We go into projects for the long run and we want to work with people who will solve problems with us. All Excelerate’s regas vessels are BV classed and as we have evolved we have worked with Bureau Veritas to traverse uncharted waters for our port/static regas model. They have earned our admiration and trust and they are a real help in a rapidly changing business environment.

Putting more underwater
Although the low oil price suppressed new projects, two trends became clear in 2015. One is that more and more equipment and processes will be installed
on the seabed for future projects. The other is that the companies providing the different elements of subsea production systems (SPS) and subsea umbilical risers
& flowlines (SURF) are allied to provide end-to-end deepwater engineering solutions.

established provider of offshore support vessels and integrated offshore marine solutions to the oil and gas industry. Our strategy is to develop niche offshore project collaborations and correspondingly niche vessels that can support the offshore services market more efficiently and cost-effectively. We own numerous offshore vessels under BV class and last year, two of the larger projects that both parties worked on successfully were the conversion of a tanker to an Offshore Floating Supply Storage Vessel and the upgrade of our pipelay heavy lift construction barge to a pipelay heavy lift construction vessel, complete with full DP3 notation. Marine renewable energy saw offshore wind turbine technology maturing in 2015, while other technologies
are still under development. The sector benefitted from Bureau Veritas’ expertise in reviewing designs and
certifying offshore wind projects. We also developed frameworks and provided vital calibration, testing
and approval in principle for current and tidal turbines and ocean thermal energy projects.
The continuing strong move towards offshore natural gas projects of all kinds drove increased demand for Bureau Veritas’ expertise in risk identification and assessment.
Tecnitas was also in demand for a wide range of marine services, particularly buckling and spectral fatigue analysis.

1MWOTECdemonstrationplantdevelopedbytheKoreaResearchInstituteofShipsandOceanEngineering.
KRISO (Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering) has been studying Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC)
plant since 2010. We have designed a 1MW OTEC demonstration plant to support sustainable development based on ocean energy and seawater with ecofriendly technologies. BV has been involved in AIP as a partner. Constructive collaboration was made through several feedbacks of evaluation, clarification and improvement between the two parties. A series of evaluations and advices with enthusiasm on original and revised designs played a key role in the success of this challenging work to demonstrate the 1MW OTEC plant in the near future.

Debmarine Namibia is a marine diamond prospecting and mining
company, owned in equal shares by De Beers and the Republic of Namibia. The Company operates five diamond mining vessels and we are currently building a deep water diamond exploration and sampling vessel. A subsidiary of Bureau Veritas, MatthewsDaniel, was part of an audit team of subject experts that conducted an Organisational Risk Assessment (ORA) audit on the Company. The audit team’s objective was to pressure test critical controls and their effectiveness in the Company. MatDan also conducted a standards audit for Debmarine Namibia on firefighting safety training providers. MatthewsDaniel was selected because of their knowledge, skills and practical experience. They brought us a different perspective and we got a good quality outcome.©

Mitigating risks
Against the background of a plummeting oil price, MatthewsDaniel continued to grow market share and strengthen in new areas. In the risk assessment sector
field rig moves continued to be popular, and MatthewsDaniel was able to deploy its expertise as rigs were repositioned around the world, many to stacking locations.
Loss adjusting continued to be a buoyant sector for MatthewsDaniel, which secured appointments on many high profile offshore incidents during the year. It also continued
to diversify into downstream, power, mining and other heavy industries.
