GM Powertrain has focused on the marine market segment.

For more than 40 years, GM has been a leader in marine engines. Its first official entry into the marine market was in 1958 with a 284-cid, 185-hp Chevrolet engine. In 1960, a group was formed within GM to fully support marine original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). Today, GM Powertrain supplies a wide array of engines to several marine OEMs.

The Vortec 6.0L V-8 VVT engine is one of GM Powertrain’s newest marine engines. It is the first marine engine from GM’s portfolio to feature Variable Valve Timing (VVT), and it comes standard with coil-near-plug ignition and EFI. It takes the technologies used in our award-winning Gen-IV truck engines and carries them into the marine environment where we continue to raise the standard in gasoline-powered marine engines.

GM Powertrain’s introduction of marine electronic fuel injection (EFI) revolutionized the boating industry. As part of a complete electronic engine management system, EFI brought smooth, instant acceleration and reliable turnkey starts to a new wave of boaters.

The current electronic control module is the sixth generation offered by GM. It reflects GM Powertrain’s continuing commitment to improving the boating experience, while helping to protect the environment.

GM focuses it’s marine engine testing on durability, includ-ing the Marine GED (Global Engine Durability) test, which runs the engine at wide open throttle under load conditions for an extended period of time. This test and others, allow GM to design a host of engines that offer great performance while requiring minimal maintenance.
