Greetings from the ProducerIn 2010, The Marin

Builders Association purchased the 34-

year- old Home Show from Doris Bagley. This event was a perfect match for the MBA, which

effectively represents and promotes its members and the Marin home-building and remodeling industry. For our second year, the goal of the Marin Home & Garden Expo is to further establish the event as a significant and important marketing opportunity for our sponsors and exhibitors and a fun and educational experi-ence for all those who attend. Our showcase for this year of “Mid-Cen-tury Modern” has a special resonance with me, as one who grew up in Marin in the ’50s and ’60s. Though it wasn’t as coveted by the whole wide world then, it truly was by all of us who lived here. It was then, as it is now, a rare and exceptional place to live, work and grow up. We are attempting to bring a taste of this gift that is Marin and its unique lifestyle to this year’s Expo. A great part of Marin’s creativity and pas-sion is reflected in our homes and gardens. The 2012 Marin Home & Garden Expo spon-

sors, exhibitors, lecturers and performers are proud to bring their own special contribu-tions and insight to address our attendees’ individual requirements and visions. When you take on a project like this you assemble the best team you can to accom-plish these challenging goals. I am lucky to work again with one of the most commit-ted staffs and supportive clients that I have enjoyed in 36 years of developing and producing events. The dedication and resources brought by our staff of Liz and Andrea to this task has made our Home Team a production manage-ment dream. The tireless efforts of Erma of Murphy Productions and Publicity in devel-oping and administrating the lectures, dem-os and entertainment as well as the Expo’s awesome publicity and advertising campaign is without equal. Last, but certainly not least, is our relationship with Marin Builders Association, its management, staff, commit-tees and board, which has been exceptional. They have been completely engaged in this project, constantly providing encouragement and support. We are your Marin Home & Garden Expo “Home Team” and we hope you enjoy the show. <—Steve Bajor, CEO • Pacific Expositions

Thank you Humboldt Redwood for donating 500 Redwood Saplings to attendees at the Marin Home & Garden Expo.To pick up your free redwood tree, visit the Contractors Pavilion. There will be 250 given away each day. Get there early!About Humboldt Redwood: Humboldt Redwood forestlands are managed in an environmentally responsible manner and are FSC certified- ensuring the longevity of our precious forests. Homeowners prefer natural Humboldt Redwood to plastic composite lumber for many factors…including its natural beauty, warmth and authenticity.

Since 1958 The Marin Builders Associa-tion has served the construc-tion industry by promoting

high ethical and professional stan-dards, providing quality services to our members, and working responsibly with our commu-nity for the enhancement of the building industry.

The 2012 Marin Home & Garden Expo is the culmination of the hard work and dedication of its staff, the members of the Expo Committee, the MBA and Pacific Expositions. In our second year as the show’s presenter, we have completely revamped the event to allow exhibitors and sponsors to showcase products and services, offering expert ideas in all facets of living space design, style and improvements.

This year, the theme of the show is the “Iconic Marin Lifestyle,” spotlighting the Eichler homes of Central Marin, the design influence of architect Daniel Liebermann on the Marin Civic Center complex, architect

Frank Lloyd Wright’s controversial and last commission, and a presentation by Allison

“your handywoman” Oropallo, a for-mer Novato High School applied-

technology teacher who was-runner up on HGTV’s All American Handymanshow.

The weekend Expo will also highlight other celeb-

rity lectures, expert demon-strations, live musical entertain-

ment and a special “Youth Zone” that focuses on fun and educational

activities for the whole family. We are confident you will find the Marin

Home & Garden Expo an event you will want to attend year after year to keep up to date on all the trends which can make your home and garden your own personal Expo!

Thank you for coming to our Marin Home & Garden Expo! <

Daniel Liebermann, a pioneer of innovative building techniques and Marin resident, will be discussing

with Sausalito architect Barry Peterson the tenets of deeply integral organic architec-ture — about how architecture can and should weave together the natural forces at work on a particular site with the ways in which humans perceive and understand the spaces they inhabit. He will trace con-nections between environmental concerns such as the geology and shape of the land, along with the local flora and fauna, wind and solar exposure with the nature of human perception. Liebermann received his Master of Land Planning and Archi-tecture degrees from Harvard University, and studied for two years with Frank Lloyd

Wright at Taliesin. Mr. Liebermann was involved with the planning of the Marin Civic Center. He has taught at UC Berkeley, NTU and Polytechnic University of Turin. Liebermann has spent four decades design-ing Bay Area houses that spiral like nautilus shells and soar like trees. A proponent of “organic architecture,” Liebermann mim-ics shapes from nature. One of his most famous designs is the Radius House, one of which is in Mill Valley. Barry Peterson met Mr. Liebermann because he, too, was an apprentice architect at Taliesin and has worked with him on several projects over the years. Join them in what is to be a very stimulating conversation at the Marin Home & Garden Expo Saturday, June 2, at 2:00pm on the Lecture Stage! <

A llison Oropallo was a Novato High School instructor in archi-tecture, woodshop and engineer-

ing for several years. She also taught evening courses in Terra Linda for the ROP construction program. Allison is dedicated to community and is passion-ately focused on improving technology education in schools. After California state budget cuts, industrial technol-ogy education programs across the state were effectively minimized, and she took a job in Arlington, Massachusetts, as a middle school technology education educator.

Last fall Allison appeared on HGTV’s, All American Handyman show and was the first female to ever make it to the finals. She was voted fan favorite by the country. She has also appeared on a DIY webisode on behalf of an HGTV design-er, Shelly Lynch-Sparks. Allison strongly

emphasizes the need of confidence and motivation for females to participate in hands-on knowledge and fields. She is dedicated to illustrating that females can do anything. Allison is also a former Division-I hockey player and a DIY’er since youth. She has participated in ren-ovations of countless projects, including houses, apartments and schools.

As a guest speaker this year she will be discussing her experiences on HGTV’s, All American Handyman show and as a female educator teaching in a male-dom-inated field. She will share her thoughts on the importance of hands-on courses for students in this country and how California should bring these programs back into the spotlight and make them a priority.

The Marin History Museum will pres-ent a display, featuring items from its artifact collection, of a Victorian

Parlor common in many homes through-out Marin in the 1850s. Parlors were also known as “sitting rooms” or “drawing rooms” — short for “withdrawing room.” By any name it was a place where guests could sit comfortably, read, embroider, take tea or just talk. In many large Victorian-era homes the parlor was so perfectly decorated that it was only opened on Sundays or to receive

the highest-rank visitors. It contained family photographs, vases, statuettes, lamps and, sometimes, a piano, all of which revealed the family’s social position and taste. With the main parlor reserved for Sundays, there was usually a secondary parlor which served the daily needs of the guests. While you are at the Marin Home and Garden Expo be sure to say hello to a the Victorian ladies at the Marin History Museum’s Victorian Parlor booth in the exhibition hall. <

Garden author and Pacific Sun contributor Annie Spiegelman and soil scientist Professor Stephen

Andrews (also known as the Dirt Duo) will answer all of your dirty questions at the Expo on Sunday at 2:00pm. They will show you how to test your soil, get your

garden into rehab (nix the chemicals) and explain why they are such devout compost crusaders. “I will give attendees a free bag of com-post just for looking interested as Stephen professes his admiration for bacteria and fungi,” promises Spiegelman. <
