Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Individual Fellowships 2015
Per M. Kommandantvold
Why are you here today?
You are a researcher Planning a career move, to build networks, improve your
independence You do need a salary next year too?
You are a supervisor, a group leader You plan to recruit first rate researchers, or strengthen a
collaboration You are an adviser
You basically need to know a bit about everything?
Outgoing? Incoming?
Either way, or reason for your interest, you need to know the context to succeed!
“The foremost priority for Europe and for the start of Horizon 2020 is exiting the current
economic crisis.” (H2020 strategic work programme 2014/15)
At the same time we need more researchers to stay in R&I due to higher
investments We need to structure the way Europe train researchers, and hire, and
evaluate, and treat them… We need to prepare for careers outside of academia We need mobility for knowledge transfer, to build independence We need equal opportunities We need to disseminate results and communicate values And so on: All this must be in the back of your head when applying for IF
Remember the policy setting!

World-leading academic groups
«Europeiske mobilitetsordninger som Erasmus+ og Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions skal brukes.» «Norske fagmiljøer utnytter ikke i tilstrekkelig grad mulighetene som disse programmene gir til å hente inn internasjonale fagfolk og talentfulle studenter. Heller ikke mulighetene for norske studenter og forskere til å reise ut blir utnyttet godt nok.»

More and better participation in H2020
Career opportunities, mobility and equality are important conditions for increasing research quality and succeeding in the EU cooperation. Higher education institutions have a special responsibility to think long term and enable students and young researchers to acquire necessary skills. It is particularly important that young researchers are given an opportunity to build their careers and become qualified at an early stage to compete for EU funds. Independence, international experience and knowledge of how to build and maintain international networks are needed. Young researchers must also be trained in international research management, to enable more to take responsibility for their institution’s participation in EU projects. Erasmus+, the EU programme for education, training, youth and sport, is an important instrument for mobility and international experience when would-be researchers are still students. Mobility and career measures in Horizon 2020 must be used to facilitate an international career as a researcher.
Horizon 2020 is…what?
Horizon 2020 will secure Europe the position as one of the world leading research and innovation regions by
securing support over three pillars…

Advice I
Read the Guide for Applicants and the Work Programme carefully!
Describe everything, do not assume that the evaluators knows the (Norwegian) system
Do you think something is irrelevant for your proposal/topic – adress it anyway! The successful applicants do!
Figures/illustrations/ pictures are sometimes better than words and makes reading less boring…
Webpages! Evaluators are NOT obliged to look at them But they MAY have a peak…
30
Advice II
Ask somebody to do a mock-up evaluation, use the evaluation forms
Write part B, leave it for 1-2 weeks, read it carefully again. Are you sure you have explained everything in a clear language that the evaluators will understand in the way they are meant to understand it?
