7 principles for Innovative Doctoral Training

II. Innovative Training Networks (ITN)

WHO CAN BE FUNDED? EARLY STAGE RESEARCHES (ESR)

ESR should be in their first 4 years of research experience and no doctoral degree at the time of their first recruitment in the ITN.

Full time equivalent research, FTE (investigación a tiempo completo): is measured form the date when a researcher obtained the degree which would formally entitle him/her to embark on a doctorate, either in the country in which the degree was obtained or in the country in which the researcher is recruited, irrespective of whether or not a doctorate is or was ever envisaged.

Mobility rule: could not have resided or carried out their main activity in the country of the host institution for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the first contract in the ITN

Recruitment period: min. 3, max. 36 months

26

II. Innovative Training Networks (ITN)

European Industrial Doctorates European Training Networks European Joint Doctorates

• 3 beneficiaries 3 MS / AC, any sector • Max. 40% budget to one country • Max. Recruitment: 15 ESR, 36 months • 30% secondments in other hosts, P.O. • Each beneficiary recruits 1 ESR • Contribution of non-academic sector

is considered essential. • Typical size: 6-10 participants

• 2 beneficiaries, 2 MS / AC • 1 academic sector/ non-academic • Doctoral programme is compulsory • 2 beneficiaries: Max. 5 ESR/36 months • >= 50% time at non-academic sector • Joint supervision • If 2 + Beneficiaries: 15 ESR + same

rules ETN

• 3 beneficiaries MS / AC, academic sector (award a doctoral degree)

• Mandatory enrollment in joint, double or multiple doctoral programme

• Max: 15 ESR, 36 months / 40% budget 1 country

• Joint government structure • Secondments: Min. period required to

be eligible to submit a doctoral degree (this will vary according to the institution and country).

II. MSCA – ITN: Innovative Training Networks

27

Research and Hands on Training

• Seminars and workshop

• Local PhD training

• Summer School

Additional Training (Transferable Skills)

• Finding funding possibilities// How to write a proposal

• Project managemente // Financial issues

• Knowledge Transfer: patents, IPR….// Entrepreneurship

• Scientific Articles writing // Public Talks

And more

• Secondments, short visits

• Communication and Public Engagement

• Public Engagement

• Final users collaboration

II. What is an ITN about?

28

SECONDMENTS

Up to 30% of the recruitment period (max. 10,8 months) .

Normal practice: during secondments researchers keep their contracts with the sending institution, which also pays their travel and subsistence expenses (i.e: accommodation).

Researchers receive supervision and training at the premises of the receiving beneficiary or partner organisation.

29

II. ITN: horizontal issues

CONSORTIUM AGREEMENT Compulsory in all modes, prior to G.A. Private agreement between consortium members to agree on recruitment strategy, selection, supervision aspects, management of funds, IPR, etc. http://www.desca-2020.eu/ + LERU + KOWI

MAIN CHARACTERISTICS

Project based in R&D and innovation activities through the secondment of personnel from the participating institutions

STAFF: actively engaged in or linked to research and innovation activities for at least 6 months at the sending institution prior to the first period of secondment (ER, ESR, MAN, ADM, TEC)

High impact expected, transfer of knowledge and technology

Secondments: Minimum of 1, maximum of 12 months
