filled with pride as our large group joined together with other members of the Griffith community to remember those

who have served our nation at times of war and those who paid the ultimate sacrifice. I thank parents, students

Marian Catholic College held our ANZAC Assembly last Tuesday. My thanks to the HSIE Department for organising

our ceremony.

Lest We Forget.

Learning and Teaching News

Professional Learning for Marian Staff

Marian staff have had a very busy first week back this term undertaking a variety of professional learning

opportunities in the areas of technology, literacy and curriculum to improve students’ learning at Marian Catholic

College. Thank you to Kelly Centofanti, Heath Neville and Lee Summerville for presenting to the staff about the

benefits of Google Apps for Education. Kelly and Heath recently attended a GAFE Summit in Sydney where they

learned about how technology can be used to enhance students’ learning in the classroom. Staff also commenced a

regular weekly technology meeting where staff will to build their skills in this area in order to better prepare our

students for the future.

Jo-Anne Benton presented to staff on how to improve writing across the KLAs using the PEEL method for paragraph

structure. PEEL is an acronym for Point, Evidence, Explain and Link. This method can be used in all subjects and it

will help to improve the structure of our students’ writing. We are also very excited to be starting a MCC Writing

Project at Marian which will be supported by one of our staff members, Belinda McKellar.

English staff spent a very productive day today with Michael Murray, an

English Consultant, who has managed state wide programs planning

the new NSW Curriculum and an experienced HSC marker and

presenter at many study days for teachers of English across the state.

They were joined by other English teachers from across the Wagga

Wagga diocese. This day was an amazing learning experience and will

serve to improve our delivery of the English curriculum from Years 7 to

12.

HSC Support Evening

Year 12 students and parents attended a session on Thursday (last) night with Patrick O’Connor, Schools

Liaison Coordinator for University of Wollongong. As the larger number of our Year 12 students choose to study

at regional universities, the information presented was particularly relevant. Topics included degree courses

offered, and combinations of these, university life - in particular on campus accommodation, which is always a

concern to parents! Patrick stressed the importance of students visiting any university they may be interested in

to see how they feel they will fit. Everyone left with a better idea of what to expect from university life, and we

appreciated Patrick making the effort to attend.

ANZAC DAY A cheerful group of Marian Catholic College students joined other high school students to lay white crosses with an attached poppy on the graves of 1002 ex-service men and women at the Griffith cemetery on Tuesday the 22nd of April.

The Griffith RSL thanks all students who gave up some of their school holiday time so that others on ANZAC day were able to identify the graves of the ex-service men and women and lay a flower and some rosemary on all 1002 graves.

Special mention to Michael Montelone who miss read the starting time and arrived at the cemetery two hours early and Ellise Pellizzer who returned on Friday to place flowers and rosemary on the graves.

Why Rosemary? Rosemary is the flower of remembrance.

The Greeks thought that rosemary was good for the memory. Greek scholars reputedly put rosemary in their hair to learn more effectively, and so among many other things it has become the herb of remembrance. For Australians and New Zealanders, the remembrance it signifies is the loss of life there in the First World War.

Participating students were:- Michael Monteleone Taylah Hill Shannon Ferguson Emma Seton Sally Hill Ellise Pellizzer

Project Compassion 2014 at Marian

Pope Francis said: “Men and women of all times and all places desire a full and beautiful life... a life that is not threatened by death but that can mature and grow to its fullness.”

Over the 6 weeks of lent this year volunteers from Year groups have been busily fundraising for Project Compassion. Year Coordinators thought to add a little competition and divided each Year into teams i.e. Year 7 & 8, Year 9 & 10 and Year's 11 and 12 went it alone. Each group took Project Compassion boxes around to their year groups and raised as much money as they could during lunch and recess.

Total were as follows:

Yr 7/8 - $147.15 Yr 9/10 - $302.00 Yr 11 - $132.40 Yr 12 - $99.90.

Congratulations goes to the Year 9 & 10 group. The school raised over $680 dollars!!!! This could install a water system in 2 sets of three houses, giving families access to constant safe drinking water in the Philippines or contribute to the running of an after-school program where young people learn life skills and receive leadership training in Brazil.

Well done to all those students that gave up their free time to help this worthy cause.

SPORTS NEWS

U/14 Boys AFL

Against strong opposition from Wade High School and St Francis, Marian rose to the occasion and put in a spirited performance. Unfortunately, we were beaten on the score board in 2 out of our 3 games but not beaten for courage and determination. Regrettably both Wade and St Francis had a little more skill and a better understanding of the game. Best for Marian included Angus Kennedy who had a strong game through the centre and kicked several goals. Jayden Andreazza whose run with the ball set up great attacking opportunities and Patrick Wordsworth who spoiled mark after mark across the back line in defence.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Brady Chambers, Jake Vilatta, Luke Franco and Logan Testoni who played down a division and helped organise and coach the boys. As well as, Will Kennedy who volunteered his time to umpire and bounder-ride for the day.

U/13 Girls AFL

On Wednesday the 30th of April a group of 15 under 13's girls attended an AFL gala day at Griffith Exies oval. The girls played a number of games throughout the day and dramatically developed their hands and feet skills as well as their understanding of the game. The girls played extremely well throughout the day and were able to take out the competition for the first time for Marian. The girls played well as a team and were well led by Jamiee Lewis, Teneeka Andreazza, Georgia Bourke and Leni Tuiaki.

They continued on with their service on Good Friday by helping the La Festa committee set up the community gardens ready for the La Festa functions held on Easter Saturday.

The whole team worked so hard & where an absolute credit to their families & to the school. These students were:
