As the weather is warming, a lot is happening outside; the snow is melting, the grass is growing, and earth is taking on a new form. With a new year comes new opportunities to learn and explore. This allows 4-H members a new start of their own. This does not mean you need to start a new project. Perhaps you can start a new part on a project you have been working on for years. Or, you can even try something new. Coming up within the next few months within the county there are multiple opportunities to explore something new or improve upon what you did last year. Strive “to make the best better.” Come participate and support other 4-H members. Coming up Outagamie County has the: Drama Fest Basketball Tournament Foods, Clothing, Knitting, and Crocheting Revue Leader’s Association Meeting

This is your opportunity to try something that you may have never tried before. Get out of your comfort zone and try something new!

Sincerely,

Thank You CornerHelping the Homeless Bags Thank-you Thank you to all the generous clubs and individuals who donated to the Youth Leaders “Helping the Homeless Bags.” We put in many items including hats, granola bars, gift cards, tissues, puzzle books, and much more. These bags were delivered to the Homeless Shelter, and have put a smile on many who were in need this past Christmas season.

Upcoming Events

Hello everyone,To me it seems January is always a “fast” month, probably because it is the first month of the year and also includes post-season football and winter sports. February is also a fast month, maybe because it is the shortest month of the year. Then comes March. With the anticipation of Spring it takes just as much time as January and February put together. It’s a good thing we have 4-H!

You can start planning and preparing your fair projects now, when you may have extra time for adding more details. •Youth are working on crafts, arts, sewing, and maybe baking some items.•Livestock exhibitors will be picking out their feeder animals for showing and attending educational meetings. •Poultry and waterfowl are being hatched.•Rabbits and other small animals are being born.

It’s always fun and exciting picking out the animals you hope will grow and develop to earn you that blue ribbon or maybe even a Grand Champion.

Don’t forget we still have Drama Fest in early March followed by the famous Basketball Tournament, which is still on, as some people came forward to help be assistant directors. Maybe take on a new challenge this year and decide to present a demonstration or a speech at the annual Speaking and Demonstration contest coming up in May.

Good luck, do your best, and try something NEW.

Youth Leaders“HIGH FIVE” to our 4-H Officers!!A “high five to our 4-H Officers and their leadership” was the basic theme at this year’s 4-H Officers Super Club Half Time Event. Even with snow, officers from different clubs and several youth leaders came to listen to an inspirational leadership themed talk by alumnus Willie Penterman. Willie promoted positive leadership training! Small group discussions were led by Deb Kozak, Mary Hoefler, Kayla Viste, Phil Hietpas and Sheila Vander Zanden. The information and comments from the officers will be shared at the next leaders meeting. The group enjoyed two games of bowling including a Laser Light bowl, a full lunch and received a “High Five” award to remember this event. Main leaders from Bent Arrow, B-Square, Buchanan Badgers, Fairview, Smile Awhile, Valley Eagles, Wide Awake Forward, On the Go and Youth Leaders, be sure to give your members who attended a “High Five” and ask them to share their experience with your club. Thank you to the leaders and parents who attended and supported this fun, rewarding event. High Five!!

WANTED: MORE 4-H MEMBERS/FAMILIES, LEADERS AND VOLUNTEERS

At the Open Forum of the January Leaders Association meeting the discussion was about how numbers of 4-H members/families are declining. The question is why are the numbers going down instead of increasing? A good truism can be said “If you have a business that is a success, don’t quit doing the things that made it successful” or in other words, what were we doing 10 years ago where we had larger involvement numbers? Sending out information by email is quick, easy and more economical, but if only half of the emails were opened, was it an effective means of communication? Could more 4-Her’s have applied for a trip or camp but knew nothing about it? Maybe it was discussed at the club’s monthly meeting but youth/parents were not present to hear it. What is the best way to reach out to make sure all youth/families are informed? How can all clubs(members/leaders/parents) make monthly meetings interesting and fun so 4-H is a priority in their lives?

We want to hear from you. Call Kayla at the UW-Extension office to share your ideas.
