Comparing financial institutions can be like comparing apples to oranges ñ the range of financial services offered today can make it overwhelming to find one place to handle all of your financial business. Fortunately for Waterville area business owners, there is New Dimensions Federal Credit Union - a member-owned, financial cooperative that offers a full array of personal and commercial banking services to meet everyone’s financial needs. So, what is “the difference” at New Dimensions? At NDFCU, you receive the high level of personalized service you would expect from a small institution, but with all the conveniences you would find at a large bank. By being a financial cooperative, the credit union can offer competitive rates on savings and loans, because profits are returned to all owners. As a member-owner at New Dimensions, you would have a vote and voice in the credit union, unlike at large financial institutions where stockholders call the shots. Finding new ways to bring greater convenience is a cornerstone of the credit union’s mission. In 2011, Ed Oliver was hired as the credit union’s Remote Mortgage Loan Officer to bring greater flexibility to credit union members looking for a residential or commercial mortgage. Oliver is available to meet with members at either branch location, at a realtor’s office, or even in the member’s own home after business hours. While major lenders have had to tighten their belts in the recession, New Dimensions FCU has continued to lend to businesses. “Being able to lend in this environment has been critical to our communities,” said Ryan G. Poulin, President and CEO, “While other lenders have had to pull back, we have been fortunate enough to be able to step in and offer commercial loans to small businesses who may not have been able to borrow otherwise.” This past year, New Dimensions FCU announced the appointment of Brad Fisher as their Business Officer. Fisher is available to help members with all of their business lending needs ñ whether they need a building, equipment, or a revolving credit line to pay for various expenses. Brad can be contacted at 872-2771 to discuss these services. Please join Mid-Maine Chamber of Commerce and New Dimensions Federal Credit Union at its 61 Grove Street, Waterville, location for Business After Hours on Wednesday, April 16, from 5:30 to 7PM!

WorkReady Partners Host March Business After Hours Many Maine employers have expressed concerns about the lack of “soft skills” possessed by workers and job seekers. In response to this feedback, Maine’s Department of Adult Education developed the WorkReady curriculum. The WorkReady credential, based on Seven Performance Standards, ensures that trainees: • Can identify personal motivations and

challenges as keys to success as employees • Have developed a plan for employment Understand how to communicate effectively • Demonstrate effectiveness in working with

others • Understand the basic principles of getting a

job • Have knowledge of basic business practices

and how to be successful at work • Are aware of work-related safety information

and its importance Classes are held five days a week, several hours a day for three weeks in order to mimic a work environment. Computer training is incorporated into the classes to build the skills necessary to communicate digitally in today’s labor market/workplace. Local businesses provide mock interviews with practical feedback to help students build their skills. Several Mid-Maine Chamber partners have worked for over 5 years to bring this training to central Maine, in order to benefit local job

seekers and the employers that hire WorkReady graduates. These partners include: • Mid-Maine Regional Adult Community

Education and Lawrence Adult Education - recruit, screen participants, coordinate program logistics

• Waterville Public Library - recruit, program supports, post-graduation opportunities

• Kennebec Valley Community Action Agency - grant oversight, program supports, follow up services for graduates

• United Way of Mid-Maine - funding, program supports

• Mid-Maine Chamber of Commerce - funding, business outreach, program supports

The students served by the WorkReady collaborative come from all walks of life, from young adults to seasoned workers; from stable homes, to living in homeless shelters; from high school dropouts to those with a college degree. The one thing students share when they enter the class is a diminishing confidence in their ability to find work. Being unemployed for a long period of time can eat away at one’s feelings of self-esteem and self- worth. By the time students complete the class, nearly all of them feel a renewed sense of self - confidence, energy and hope. For some, the WorkReady experience has even

been life transformative. The success of the WorkReady Program is truly dependent on the collaborative efforts of the above mentioned local service providers as well as the local business leaders. Ideally the service providers work together to ensure the value of the WorkReady credential and the employers step up by hiring students who have earned this credential. By putting qualified people into great jobs, everyone wins! Please join the WorkReady partners at Waterville Public Library from 5:30-7PM on Wednesday, March 19th, for its Mid-Maine Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours.

The WorkReady information session meeting is at the WPL on Thursday,

March 13, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. – a perfect place to connect with the next FREE WorkReady program opportunity.
