I would like to thank all of our readers for sticking with SPE during these lean and difficult times.

I realize how difficult it is to find time for an SPE meeting with all the other high priority demands on your time. Despite all our competing interests the NY Section of the SPE has managed to maintain one of the most important fund raising events for our Section.

Spreading the word about the plastics industry and helping our members keep in touch is the main function of our society. The scholarships that are funded by the proceeds from our golf outing is our best and most mean-ingful outreach mechanism. Helping young people get an education is a great thing to be involved with. This year we are also raising funds for the Lustgarten Foundation to cure Pancreatic Cancer so your participation and atten-dance is greatly appreciated.

Please save the date and come out and joins your friends and colleagues for a day of fun at the Clearview Golf Course on Tuesday, June 14, 2011.

Save The Date!See you at the Clearview Links!

SOCIAL NETWORKING MEETING

The Board of the New York SectionLet’s help each other grow.

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 6 @ 6:00 PMCLEARVIEW PARK GOLF COURSE

If you have spent any considerable time in our industry, you realize you are living in “very interesting times.” The mood swings of the orders our customers --- whether or not it is for finished goods, raw materials, or equipment --- has made it nearly impossible to project our future business. We are excited when it spikes, we are depressed when it ebbs. We shouldn’t feel, however, that we are in a vacuum. Perhaps it is time to stop thinking that our issues are unique, and go back to some of the behaviors that made our industry grow and prosper in previous decades. One of these behaviors was the networking that is available through the Society. The Section leadership has realized that many of its members have asked for a new look for the Section in terms of meeting structure, and they have developed Networking and other social events to replace what many felt was a tired model.

Plastic: Too Good to Throw AwayBy SUSAN FREINKEL

Published: March 17, 2011NYTimes.com

SINCE the 1930s, when the product first hit the market, there has been a plastic toothbrush in every American bathroom. But if you are one of the growing number of people seeking to purge plastic from their lives, you can now buy a wooden toothbrush with boar’s-hair bristles, along with other such back-to-the-future products as cloth sandwich wrappers, metal storage containers and leather fly swatters.

The urge to avoid plastic is understandable, given re-ports of toxic toys and baby bottles, seabirds choking on bottle caps and vast patches of ocean swirling with everlasting synthetic debris. Countless bloggers write about striving — in vain, most discover — to eradicate plastic from their lives. “Eliminating plastic is one of the greenest actions you can do to lower your eco-foot-print,” one noted while participating in a recent online challenge to be plastic-free.

Is this true? Shunning plastic may seem key to the ethic of living lightly, but the environmental reality is more complex.

THREE FORUMS AT SPE ANTEC® 2011 WILL FOCUS ON NEW TECHNOLOGIESFOR ALTERNATE ENERGY SYSTEMS, HEALTHCARE, AND ANTI-MICROBIALS

NEWTOWN, CT, U.S.A., January 24, 2011: Three New Technology Forums at the Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE) ANTEC® 2011 conference will explore plastics innovations with potential to advance the state of the art in alternate energy systems, healthcare, and prevention of healthcare-acquired infections, it was announced today by SPE.

ANTEC 2011 will take place May 1-5 in Boston. The New Technology Forums will be half-day symposia, concur-rent with other ANTEC sessions, starting at 1:30 pm on three successive days.

Polymers in Solar and Flexible Films. New developments to be discussed in seven technical presentations will focus on roll-to-roll photovoltaic systems, solar concentrators, and flexible displays. Organizations represent-ed by the presenters will include DuPont, 3M, Sabic, SkyFuel, Guardian Industries, Akron Polymer Systems, and the University of Akron. Sedat Gunes, Ryan Breese, and Shriram Bagrodia are the organizers of the symposium. Monday May 2.

Polymer Applications in Health Research. Co-sponsored by SPE’s Medical Plastics Division, this symposium will consist of five presentations on materials and processes that are not yet commercial but promise to advance the fields of orthopedics, implants, tissue engineering, and medical devices. The presentations will cover these topics: nanotechnology applications in implants (Brown University); silk-based biomaterials for medical de-vices (Tufts University); polymers and composites for stem cell tissue engineering (New Jersey Institute of Technology); hydrogels for hernia mesh fixation (HyperBranch Medical Technology); and surface-modified biomaterials for treating infections (Emergence Venture Partners). Organizers are Sadhan C. Jana, Prithu Muk-hopadhyay, and Len Czuba. Tuesday May 3.

Advances in Anti-Microbial Technologies for Plastics. This symposium will examine advances that can help prevent healthcare-acquired infections such as those from MRSA bacteria in hospitals. Four technical pre-sentations and a panel discussion will deal with anti-microbial agents for use in medical devices, diagnostic equipment, clinical furniture, and hospital-room construction materials. Organizations represented by the presenters will include PolyOne, Milliken, NanoHorizons, Polymedix, and WuXi AppTec. Organizers are Roger Avakian and Vaman G. Kulkarni. Wednesday May 4.

A detailed agenda for each symposium is posted at http://www.4spe.org/antec-2011-new-technology-forums.

SPE-ANTEC® (Annual Technical Conference), sponsored by the Society of Plastics Engineers, is the leading tech-nical forum on cutting-edge technology and information pertinent to the needs of the plastics industry.
