Patricia Harcourt Editor, Tofield Mercury They've come a long way to return to the land of their ancestors. Seventy-one plains bison calves from Elk Island National Park taken to a reserve in Montana in Jan. have now been released onto their historic grazing ranges. The animals were on the brink of extinction when, in 1907, Plains Bison from Montana were shipped to the park to form a founda- tion herd that has been used ever since to replen- ish areas where bison once thrived. Now the favour has been returned as these 70 calves were taken on Jan. 24 and shipped to the American Prairie Reserve (APR) in Montana. Parks Canada said the historic trip completed the full circle journey for North America's Plains Bison. The transfer sup- ported the America Prairie Foundation's goal to con- serve grasslands and restore bison to the Great Plains north of the Missouri River in north- eastern Montana. The Government of Canada purchased the last large herd of wild bison in 1906 called the Pablo- Allard herd, which formed the foundation herd at the park. The herd of bison brought to Montana in Jan. brings the herd numbers on the graz- ing ranges to 210 animals. The park had already shipped 93 bison in 2010 to the American Prairie Reserve. On Mar. 8, the reserve announced that the recent- ly acquired 71 bison were released onto their origi- nal habitat in northeastern Montana - land conserved by the organization. This was called "an his- toric homecoming for these bison," a place where tens of thousands once roamed the vast prairie landscape. "We knew from the beginning that returning bison to the land would be an important step in restoring the reserve's full biodiversity," said Sean Gerrity, APR's President. "When the Canadian gov- ernment purchased the herd, it helped the species survive near extinction. Now we are bringing them back to help restore a complete grassland eco- system." The process began in 2005 when APR brought 16 bison to Montana's northern plains. The bison released Mar. 8 will join a herd of 140 bison already roaming the reserve. They will live with pronghorn deer, elk, prairie dogs, and many varieties of grassland birds. The APR is working to create the largest wildlife reserve in the continental U.S. The result is to be three million acres of pri- vate and public land that will connect one of the last large sections of untilled temperate grasslands on the continent. In addition to represent- ing a historic milestone, the homecoming is impor- tant scientifically and genetically. The Elk Island bison herd is highly regarded in conservation circles because it is the only source herd for bison rein- troduction efforts that is proven to be free of cattle gene introgression, a rare distinction that relates to widespread attempts to breed bison with cattle. APR is building a non- introgressed herd to pre- serve a scarce genetic resource and to avoid any deleterious effects that cat- tle genes may have on bison, such as altered metabolic rates, reduced fertility or changes in behaviour. “There are far fewer non-introgressed bison than previously thought just two years ago due to dramatic advancements in genetic analysis technolo- gy,” explains Bryce Christensen, APR Man- ager. APR tests all of its animals using the latest single nucleotide poly- morphisms test, or SNPs. To date, the APR bison herd is the only herd in North America in which every animal has been tested using the SNPs technology. The new bison calves arrived on American Prairie Reserve in Jan. after undergoing disease testing and a quarantine period at Elk Island. The animals then went through a second round of disease testing, Brucellosis vaccination and quaran- tine at the Reserve's spe- cial handling facility. “The bison homecoming is a heart-warming chap- ter in the history of the near-extinction and slow comeback of Plains Bison in North America,” said the Honourable Peter Kent, Canada's Envir- onment Minister and Minister responsible for Parks Canada. “American Prairie Reserve's work to set aside lands for prairie wildlife has united with Canada's work in conserv- ing plains bison to strengthen a future for a magnificent animal that is part of the shared heritage of both nations.” The 2012 trans-bound- ary relocation is the sec- ond in the partnership between APR and Parks Canada. The two worked together in 2010 to relocate a group of 93 bison to the Reserve. World Wildlife Fund, APR's science part- ner, also supported this year's transfer. Founded in 2001, American Prairie Reserve currently spans 123,000 acres of public and private land that is open to the public for camping and recreation. Elk Island Park was created in 1906, becoming Canada's first wildlife sanctuary. In 1913, Elk Island became Canada's sixth and only entirely-fenced national park. Parks Canada manages the pri- ority national recovery herds for plains and wood bison in Canada at Elk Island National Park, located just south of Lamont. Its great to get a taxrefund but it could beeven better for your long-term financial health if youdidnt get one. You see, thats your money youregetting back overpaidtaxes the government hashad for its use interest-free.Money that could havebeen working for youthroughout the year.

Delete that refund, improve your tax planning, keep more of your money, and enhance your financialfuture with these tips:

Boost your paychequeby reducing the amount oftax withheld and investthe money for your ownbenefit

Each pay period, a por-tion of your pay is sent tothe Canada RevenueAgency (CRA) to coveryour estimated year-end

taxes. If you got a refund, its likely because the with-held amount is excessive. You can apply to have itreduced by having youremployer complete aPersonal Tax Credit Returnform (TD1) that updates allthe deductions and creditsyou claim and more accu-rately reflects your currentcircumstances. For exam-ple, you may now be eligi-ble for further child careexpense deductions or forspousal maintenance thatwerent including on theTD1 form that was filedwhen you were first hired.

Get quarterly taxinstallments in on time

If you are required tomake tax installments (dueon the 15th of March, June,September and December)get them in on time to avoidpenalties and interest. Ifyou think your income willbe lower next year, checkwith your accountant aboutreducing those payments.

    Get an early RRSPdeduction

An RRSP contributionoften results in a tax refund. But when you make yourcontribution earlier in theyear, you can apply to theCRA for a Letter of

Authority that will permityour employer to reduceyour paycheque withhold-ing taxes based on theamount of your RRSP con-tribution. If you make RRSPcontributions through pay-roll deductions, you donteven need a Letter ofAuthority. Simply ask youremployer to adjust your taxwithheld to reflect yourRRSP payroll contribution.

There are lots of otherways to get your moneyworking for you. Your pro-fessional advisor can helpyou make the best tax plan-ning and investment deci-sions for your unique situa-tion.
