Hello Everybody—Well—the best laid plans can easily go astray!

I had planned to address some of the tax issues all of us as square dance club members are up against this year. However, at this writing even the IRS is still in flux and so planning for the future is close to impossible at the moment.

Then, of course, the unexpected occurred and Fredi and I were involved in an auto accident. So I want to extend my most sincere thanks to all who shared their thoughts and well wishes, sent cards, and more! Your caring has buoyed us up during the past weeks! Fredi’s recovery will keep her off the dance floor for up to four months. My injuries were less severe, but still for now due to my hand, I don’t feel dance-floor worthy.

So, we are grateful to all of you for your support, and we look forward to seeing you in a square as soon as we are able! — Alan Lubberts

A Square D Club Happenings:Boots & Bows

On December 5th Boots & Bows club members held a square dance demonstration, and teaching session for audience members at the Torrance Memorial Hospital Festival of Trees called by Dale Hoppers. We always enjoy dancing under the big tent and viewing the beautiful trees at what has become an annual event for our club.

Sixty-seven club members and friends from the square dance community attended our annual holiday dinner-dance on December 13, 2019, with a catered sit-down dinner of chicken maribella, rice, vegetables, and salad. Boots & Bows supplied the hors d’oeuvres and desert. Dale Hoppers was our Master of Ceremonies for dancing and entertainment.

The following Tuesday 39 square dancers and friends journeyed by bus to the Mission Inn Festival of Lights in Riverside. The afternoon started with an 80-minute guided tour of the historic hotel and then at 5:00 the switch was thrown and five million lights came on. The lights and decorations outside and inside the hotel were truly outstanding.

Our February 15, 2020 dance was our 64rd Anniversary Dinner Dance with a barn dance theme. We had an old fashioned chili cook-off dinner. Johnny Preston was the caller with Jim Smith cuing.

(continued from pg. 1) this edition reaches you.  Our graduation will be on June 9th         Once again the Buckles & Bows sponsored the Blue Box Project, formed by club members, Pat and Jerry Akers, in honor of their granddaughter, who tragically lost her life in a traffic accident several years ago.  She started this as a high school community project.  It is the collection of personal care items for women and children affected by domestic violence, and has become quite a sensation, and success, over several states.  Our items were delivered to the Light House for Women and Children in Oxnard.        We held our 45th Anniversary dance in February, with David Mee calling and Gus DeFore cueing.  In March we will be heading off to the Bakersfield Fiesta with our students in tow, and will have Mike Seastrom calling our monthly dance on March 28th.  We will have Eric Henerlau calling on April 25th and Andy Allemao arriving at 5:30 on May 23rd for a 90-minute HEX workshop and then our regular monthly dance, with a HEX tip in the middle of the dance.        Our 4th Saturday dances are held at the Goebel Adult Community Center in Thousand Oaks.  We have pre-rounds from 6:30–7:30 p.m., with tips from 7:30 -10 p.m.  We also add an Advance tip at 10 p.m.       We participate in other numerous activities in the community, sometimes those being fundraisers for worthy causes.        Again, we invite you to join us at our dances.  We would love to see you and promise you a great dance and outstanding snacks.  Come join the fun.  We would love to have you.

Church MiceChurch Mice will be DARK in March for Bakersfield, April 18th is

“Flower Power” with Dan Norbye and Bill Bingham; May 16th is our 52nd Anniversary Dance with David & Dawn Mee.  The theme will be the “Wild Wild West and there will be a silent auction for everyone to enjoy.  The dance will be held at the Church of Foothills 19211 Dodge Ave, Santa Ana (This dance only).   More information, contact Chris 714 788-1011 or Pat 714 209-6546

Our beginning class is going well and they should graduate in July or August.  They are looking forward to the Leprechan Ball and the New Dancer Hoedown, both great class-level dances.  Come join our classes and the last 45 minutes we have a Plus workshop.  Classes are held Sunday nights at the Columbus Gym 17522 Beneta Way, Tustin 6–8:30 p.m. For more information Contact Dianna (714) 423-3533, or Deanna (949) 812-8852.

We enjoyed the holidays with a dinner party combined with the Rustlers at Rodrigos and rang in the New Eve with a fun game night at the Steger›s.  We will hold our annual fundraiser at the Tustin Street Fair Chili Cook-off on Sunday June 7th.  We sell brats, hot dogs, roasted corn and nachos.  We even have an opportunity to demonstrate how fun square dancing is. Happy Spring!

Grin-N-Square It Our club dances on the 3rd Saturday each month in the Senior Center at 3120 Tyler Ave in El Monte. Pre-rounds at 7:30 are followed by square dancing

Boots & Slippers of Simi ValleyWhat a wonderful new member’s class we have, dedicated! Every Monday

night the Angels and the new members dance together and learn new steps lead by our fearless leader Dick Hodenfield. We are now just past the half-way mark! Keep it up new dancers!

Our annual New Year Eve Dance was a roaring success as not just the Boots & Slippers folks were out in force but many other club members joined us. Always a great event!

Please see our website (ever evolving) at www.bootsandslippers.com for upcoming dances as well as special events. Keep on dancing!

Buckles & Bows Our class has felt the normal attrition suffered by all classes.  We now have 24 dedicated students, all of whom we expect to stay the course.  We also have two others who visit us weekly from another class.  Now we look forward to the Student Stomp, which we advertise as mandatory, and which will be long past by the time

8:00–10:30 p.m.. We have a great dance hall with wood floors and we also have terrific refreshments at break.

For Spring dancing we have: March 21 (Spring Fling) with Lawrence Johnstone and Shauna Kaaria cuing, on April 18 (Hippity Hop Dance) with Dale Hoppers and Shauna Kaaria, and for May 16 (Salute the Troops) with Dennis Young and Shauna Kaaria. Bill and Ginny Abbott, who are our treasurers, were voted Square Dancers of the Year and represented our club at the Sweetheart Ball in February. We have a fundraiser on the third Tuesday of the month at Cabrera’s Mexican Restaurant in Duarte. Just tell the personnel that you are part of the square dance group and write it on your receipt. Check out our website www.grinnsquareit.com for all the latest information about our club. Happy Squares Our Happy Squares club held a dance in memory of Lynn DeFore, wife of our cuer, Gus DeFore; Bill Leese, husband of Marge Leese, who represented us at ASqD for years; and John Troup, our caller coordinator for many years. We miss their presence at our dances and other activities. Our dance schedule for this year is slightly different from the past. Our rounds begin at 6:45 p.m. with our dances beginning at 7:30 p.m. The dances will conclude at 10:00 p.m. In July, we will have rounds at 7:15 and squares beginning at 8:00 for that one night only. On March 14, we will celebrate our 51st anniversary with Deborah Carroll-Jones from Arlington, Texas, calling. April 11th will be our Spring Fling dance with Buddy Weaver from San Marcos, CA, calling. On May 9th, we will have our Men’s Dessert Night with Dan Nordbye of Gilbert, Arizona, calling. These are great callers who always give us a great time.—Marie Gray, Delegate

Lads ‘N’ Lassies We started the New Year off with a well-attended restaurant fundraiser. There

were approximately 25 happy diners and everyone chatted and enjoyed the food. The Sweetheart Ball is always a festive event and our selected “sweetheart”

was Joyce Stillwell, our current co-president. She has held a number of positions—elected and appointed—since joining Lads ‘N’ Lassies in 1991. Our next hosted dance is May 2, with Dan Nordbye (Canby, Oregon) calling and Jim Elder cueing. The theme is “Spring Fling!”—a throwback from some of our long ago dances. We always look forward to having Dan call for us and we know he will make our dance special. In the meantime, our sister club, Farmers & Charmers, is hosting the March and April dances. On March 7, they have Scot Byars and the theme is “Mardi Gras.” Andy Allemao is calling the April 4 dance, which happens to be their 56th Anniversary – “Berries & Flowers.” Cindy Mower is the cuer for both dances. We’ll be there to support them and to help them celebrate another year of dancing. All dances and our Plus-level Workshop are held at Wilkinson Center,

8956 Vanalden Ave., Northridge (1 block East of Tampa/1 block South of Nordhoff). It’s an air-conditioned hall with a wood floor and ample parking. Info: Jim (818) 892-8410 or Jeanne (818) 268-1846. Dance donation is $10/per person; workshop donation is $8/per person.

Ramblin’ Rogues The Ramblin’ Rogues were pleased to offer our south Orange Count-based dancers bus transportation to the Sweetheart Ball in February. Over 50 club members attended the event to honor our 2020 Club Sweethearts Carol Eggers and Steve Stadnick. Our beginning square dance classes started in June and are going strong with approximately 20 class members and 50 angels attending each Thursday night from 7:00–9:00 p.m. with instructor David Mee and John & Sandy Hill teaching line dancing. We offer students a 30-minute review workshop with John Hill before class and Sanae Atkins after class. For more opportunity to review calls, John and Sandy hold a Sunday afternoon “Practice & Pizza” at their home in January and March. After a three-hour workshop, we socialize with a pizza, wine, beer, and soft drinks. Many of our class members and newer dancers have been attending the class-level dances in Orange County. Ramblin’ Rogues classes and dances are held at the Norman P. Murray Community Center in Mission Viejo. Our club dances are 7:30–10:00 p.m. with one Advanced tip and line dancing between tips. We have a singles rotation, refreshments, and all Plus-level dancers are welcome. The Rogues invite everyone to join us in celebrating our 53rd anniversary on March 6 with Mike Seastrom. This year we have two club dances scheduled in April. Ken Ritucci will call our April 3rd dance, and “International Heritage Day” will be celebrated at our April 17th dance with Mike Sikorsky. “Mee Mouse in the House” is the theme for our May 1st dance with David Mee. With many class-level dances, several social events, the Leprechaun Ball, and the Bakersfield Fiesta coming up, the Rogues are looking forward to a very busy and exciting Spring. For more information about our club and visitations, please call 714-902-9422 or visit our website: RamblinRogues.org.

RustlersJanuary 6th began a new year, a new decade, and our new beginner’s

class. Steve Woodard continues to be our fantastic teacher and Sheri Bolton enthusiastically teaches line dancing. The newest class members are taught from 7–8:30 and are followed by a continuation of lessons from 8:30–9:30 p.m. for the students who began the Sept. class and are already confident in Mainstream and moving into Plus-level dancing. The students have learned so quickly, thanks to Steve’s great instruction. We meet at The Prentice School, 18341 Lassen Dr. (off Esplanade), in Santa Ana. Students from other beginner’s classes have joined us and are having lots of fun. Ladies, this is also a great opportunity for you to learn the “left-hand position” (as Mike Seastrom calls the “boys” part). Look for class-level dances that will be offered for all of the beginner students’ enjoyment. Thanks for your support!!

Thanks to all of our guests who continue to come out to our Rustlers’ dances. Here is the next line-up of top-notch callers along with Bev Oren who graciously cues our round dancing: February 22nd with Johnny Preston “Carnival Party”; March 28th with Dee Dee Dougherty “Spring Flowers” (Silent Auction with great gift baskets available), and April 25th “Earth Day” featuring Mike Hogan. We are DARK in May but will be visiting the Major Keys as our dances are scheduled on the same night.

Trail Dusters First, congratulations to Farryl & Bill Dickter, our Club 2020 Sweethearts!

Farryl and Bill have been active and supportive members of our club for 10 years; they have served in a number of executive positions as well as always being among the first to volunteer when and where needed. We were happy to honor them at the Ball this past February 9 and we continue to appreciate and thank them for all that they do. They certainly are members of the core group of individuals that are the responsible for the cub’s continuing success.

gain more confidence. Our club caller, Paul Waters, continues to do a great job teaching and shows amazing patience with our newest dancers. On June 10th we will celebrate their successes!

Our class-level dance held on January 8th with Paul Waters and Mike Seastrom calling was a huge success with over 100 dancers enjoying the afternoon dancing, noshing, and meeting other new dancers. Everyone came away with a sense of friendship and a new appreciation for how fun our activity can be.

The club once again had a very successful New Year’s Eve Dinner/Dance Gala at the Hilton Hotel in Canoga Park—over a 110 Trail Dusters and friends gathered to dance & dine and welcome 2020 in style with friends and fun. Now we are looking forward to our annual weekend getaway in late Spring. This year’s theme is “High School Hangouts” and the organizing committee is sure to put on a fun filled and entertaining time. Our class members are treated as royalty at this weekend and it serves to make them feel welcome and a part of the club.

Valley TrailersOur December, 2019 Holiday party was a roaring success with a live

band, lots of delicious food, and everyone having a wonderful time. The Valley Trailers had an official visitation to the 2020 Sweetheart Ball. Joyce & Steve Kay were our Sweethearts.

Future dance dates at the Wilkinson Center are: we’ll be dark on March 21st; April 18th Jay Henderson with the theme Hop into Spring, and May 16th Dan Preedy with the theme Hot Dog Hoedown. Classes are doing well with a beginners’ class starting on March 10th. All are invited.

Western WeaversWe have a great group of students attending our classes, many of whom we

hope you met at our Halfway Dance and the Student Stomp in January. Our instructor is Dale Hoppers and we start with Line Dancing at 6:30 p.m. with squares starting at 7:30 p.m. Classes are held at Magnolia Park Methodist Church, 2828 W. Magnolia Blvd. in Burbank. Students, and angels, from all clubs are always welcome to come and practice their steps with the Western Weavers.

As usual, we had a very successful Pre-New Year’s Eve dance. If you missed it and want to join us next year, mark your calendar for Tuesday, Dec. 29, as we have already scheduled it!

Our club has elected its new Board for 2020. Some of these members are capably holding down multiple positions. Our new president is Scott Summers, while John Garcia is our new vice president, as well as continuing as our publicity chair and newsletter editor. You will see Scott and John making announcements at our dances and classes. Michael Brodie returns as our treasurer and Associated Square Dancers Delegate. Michael is backed up by Robert Lillie as assistant treasurer. Teresa Amos is our recording secretary as well

as our backup social secretary. Our former president, Kit Wren, will now become an advisor to the club and

continue to help run the club’s incredible Facebook page at www.facebook.com/westernweavers, post many photos of our dances and doings. Check in to see how many square dancers you recognize.

We hope to see all of you at our upcoming dances with new themes and great callers and cuers. Over the next few months we have Mike Haworth, Bill “Tex” Gipson, Gary Shoemake, Terri Sherrer, Scot Byars, Rod Shuping and Shauna Kaaria calling for us. Our dances are held on the second and fourth Fridays of each month at 7:30 p.m. at the Joslyn Center, 1301 W. Olive Ave. in Burbank. Valley-Ventura-Santa Barbara District

Student StompJanuary 26, 2020

The caller-instructors from the Valley-Ventura-Santa Barbara District clubs led a packed floor of students and angels in an afternoon of fun at the first student-level dance of 2020! Dale Hoppers, above, also led line dancing. Rod Shuping, above center, Don Shadt, above right, Paul Waters and Mike Seastrom, at right, were joined by Dick Hodnefield as MC. Energy needs were high and fueled by plenty of good treats supplied by district clubs.

For many of the students on the dance floor, this was their first experience of a large intra-club event providing an opportunity to dance with others outside their own classrooms. Near the end of the dance, Dale Hoppers called for a moment of silence to observe the passing of Kobe Bryant and his fellow passengers killed in a helicopter crash earlier that morning.

Thank you for reading the Associated Square Dancers’ Grapevine newsletter, and supporting square dance.
