St. Andrew’s Worship Times

Growing up we would have Easter egg hunts on Easter morning. They were fantastic. My dad took this work very seriously. Every corner of the house. Up, down, in cupboards, on book shelves. He and my mother would take hours hiding eggs and gifts. My sister and I would look all over the home finding our eggs. It took all morning… and then some.

You see, my dad not only hid them, he hid them so well we often would not find them all. As a matter of fact he hid them so well HE did not even find them all. We would often still find eggs year round. One year even at Christmas time we found a large chocolate egg. In many ways, there where signs of Easter in my house all year round.

This year as we prepare for our Holy Week experience, as we prepare to experience Easter, we know that our worship is not just a quick show or an event. We know that somehow we are invited with the disciples to stand in complete amazement that the love of God cannot be stopped. We are invited to walk the path with Jesus and witness that his love for the human race is unending. That the love of Christ keeps revealing itself to us all year long and cannot be hidden.

It is my hope that you not only come to experience the story or enter into the story, but that you live into this movement of God that shapes not just a day but the entire world for eternity. And, like my father’s Easter eggs, continues to surprise throughout the entire year.

Holy Week Prayer VigilBegins Maundy Thursday, March 24, 8 p.m. and ends Saturday, March 26, 8 a.m.

Sanctuary Prayer Chapel

Jesus asks his disciples to watch and pray. Take half an hour or more during Holy Week to watch and pray with Jesus. A special space will be devoted to this Prayer Vigil in the Prayer Chapel with Bibles and resources available to guide your prayer.

During the Prayer Vigil we will have someone praying every hour, day and night from the end of our Maundy Thursday evening worship service until Saturday morning. Families and groups can sign up together (more than one person can be praying during a time slot).

Contact Lisa Grundtner, [email protected] or Dale Bakken, [email protected] for information.

Serve During Holy WeekDuring Lent we have 30 worship services, and just during Holy Week we have over 20 services. That means we need over 500 volunteers. If you by yourself or with your family could usher, greet or help out at one or more services, we can really use your help. Please go to saintandrews.org and hit the “volunteer” button, or contact Carole Lundell at [email protected] or 651-762-9132.

Palm Sunday Lumberjack Flapjack BreakfastMarch 20, 9:30 a.m. to noon in the Youth & Sports Center

Get your fill of flapjacks, sausage, bacon and eggs before or after you are filled by the spirit at worship! A suggested free will offering of $10 will be greatly appreciated to support our 2016 summer youth mission trips and Confirmation camp.

Proclaim Jesus Christ, Live in Christ, Serve!

Empowered by God’s love, we help transform lives, communities and the world so that everyone may know Christ’s healing power.

What does it mean to join St. Andrew’s?Joining a church does not give you added perks. You don’t get the best parking spots, a discount off your offering or reserved seating on the holidays. The Pastors don’t come to your bedside any faster than a non-member and you are not guaranteed a solo in the choir. So why join?

Joining a church is about belonging to a community that believes in the same things you do. It’s about being part of a place that looks beyond themselves and helps others. It’s about finding friends who will walk with you in thick and thin. It’s knowing that others need you, miss you and want to share their lives with you.

And mostly it is about our Triune God. God who is communal in nature. God who continues to pursue us no matter where we run. God who moves with us, guides us and is present in our daily lives. Here at church you are reminded of that, given the Word and share in the sacraments and then pushed out into your own worlds to carry the message. We, the church, are here to be a part of your journey.

If you want to join St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church, we invite you to New Member Class on Sunday, April 17, at 11:30 a.m. in the Sanctuary Building. We will provide lunch and child care. You will get to know the Pastors and others who are joining St. Andrew’s, as well as know more about the church and how to access the various ministries.

Please R.S.V.P. or for more information please contact Ronda Sowada at [email protected] or 651-762-9139.

Special Member Class for Families who Baptized Children in 2015April 24, 11:45-1:30

Lunch and Childcare Provided

Parents are so good at doing things for their children and putting them first. This includes being a member in the church. There are many families who baptize their children, making them members of St. Andrew’s, yet forget to join for themselves. If this fits your family, then we have a special class just for you.

On April 24 we will gather together any family who baptized a child in 2015 but the rest of the family still needs to join the church. We will have special guests to introduce you to the ministries that are for your family as well as how to engage your faith at St. Andrew’s.

Please R.S.V.P. or more information please contact Ronda Sowada: [email protected] or 651-762-9139.

Radical Hospitality:

Proclaiming Christ’s Love In Action — Part 2by Erin Morris, Diaconal Minister of Faith Engagement

Radical Hospitality: The act of making others comfortable and most often it involves making yourself uncomfortable.

For example: sitting in church. Many people get to church early, and those that do are coming to see friends and sit in their normal section. (Which, as a leader in the church, I do like when people sit in their regular sections so that I can see who is here and who is missing.) Yet many times when they sit, it is on the ends of the pews. Who doesn’t like an end seat?

So picture this, a family, who has been thinking about going to church for a while finally gets all the kids dressed, gets everyone in the car and barely makes it to St. Andrew’s. Then they encounter the parking lot, after driving to, what feels like the ends of the earth, they find a spot, make the long trek to the church and the first hymn has started and everyone is standing. Now they must look for a spot to sit.

Or maybe it is the man who buried his wife a few weeks ago and now has come back to worship without his partner in life to sit with.

Or a couple who has heard about St. Andrew’s in the community, thinking this might be their new church home and when they look, no pew or row is open for them.

Sometimes our habits, or what makes us comfortable, is not helpful or welcoming to a stranger. Here are a couple of simple things you can do to begin being radical in your hospitality.

• Sit in the middle of a pew or row. This invites others to join you.

• Wear your name tag at church. It can be awkward asking someone’s name if you have talked with them before,

as well as it says “Hi, I am friendly. Come talk to me.”

• If you are able, park as far as you can from the main entrances. Let’s face it, our parking lot is not the most friendly and convenient place. Allowing those who are new or running late the closer spots welcomes them instead of punishing them.

Those are just a few things that might be an inconvenience or take you out of your comfort zone, and could be just what someone else needs that day. If we believe that God calls people

and is active in our lives, then we never know who God is calling to the church of St. Andrew’s and how the Holy Spirit is moving us to action. Start being radical in your hospitality today!

Bible Verse: Luke 24:5b-6a: “Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here; he is risen!”

During Lent we prepare our hearts for Easter and the Good News. Kids will hear the Parable of the Talents and learn about the gifts God has given each one of us.

On Palm Sunday kids will participate in a parade through the worship service waving palm branches and shouting “Hosanna!” To trace Jesus’ Journey to the Cross kids will create a photo album as they act out scenes from Holy Week and take photos. Check Facebook for some dramatic photos - we will also show kids a slide show of themselves during Large Group time.

April: Where is Jesus?

Bible Verse: Luke 6:31 “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” Where is Jesus after Easter? We will challenge kids to take Jesus with them throughout the month and post photos on Facebook of themselves with a Jesus cut-out (like Flat Stanley). Jesus is always with us!

Celebration Service: Maundy Thursday, March 24, 2016; 7 p.m.

Children Grade 1 and older are invited to participate in the Communion Workshop. The decision to participate is one that needs to be made by the family; each child develops differently both mentally and spiritually. Communion is always open for any believing heart to partake.

The workshop is a supplemental element to aide in understanding the sacrament better. During our workshop participants will learn about the history of communion, partake in a sampling of Passover foods, baking bread and how to prepare for the sacrament itself. Parents or Godparents are asked to attend class with their child but the whole family is invited to join in.

High School Relevance NightTuesdays, 2:30-6 p.m. Youth & Sports Center

High School is awesome. It’s also a time in our lives when we’re under constant pressure to get into a good college, have lots of friends, look great, excel in sports or music, get lots of “likes” on Twitter, and have a part-time job while maintaining great grades and keeping everyone around us happy. In a world where the weight teenagers have to carry gets heavier and heavier, St. Andrew’s has created High School Relevance Night – a place for our students to be themselves and talk about real life (while playing fun games and getting to know one another, of course). Join us on Tuesdays for a time of fellowship, fun, faith, and (if you bring money) food!

Join other families and youth as we eat lunch, create covenants and choose verses to bless the cars. On Sunday, April 24, we will meet after the 10:30 a.m. service and have a formal blessing.

Practicing in the Presence/Yin Yoga – Monday Evenings 5:15-6:15 p.m. in the Great Hall. Yin Meditation incorporates gentle movements and listening for the voice of God. Yin yoga is done on the floor, with props and with greater attention/space to breathing. While being one of the more meditative yoga practices yin is also considered to be one of the more healing yoga practices as it works passively to open joints and release fascia…both which when inflamed restrict our movements and activities of daily living. It is quieter and deeply meditative. Yin is a stand alone practice and/or a complimentary practice for those who practice a more active form of yoga. This is a great practice for athletes as well as those who might have trouble getting up and down off the floor!

Joining a Builders’ Group in Martin, Slovakia April 18 to May 4, 2016

We will work on constructing classrooms in the newly acquired high school buildings of the Lutheran Academy of the Center for Christian Education. It was a miracle to acquire these buildings for present and future growth of the Lutheran high school, but there is a lot of work to be done to renovate this space into classrooms, a cafeteria, a gymnasium, computer and science labs and teacher offices.

With this said, we are asking you to prayerfully consider joining the 2016 Builders’ Group trip led by Joe and Joann Lunders. Please contact them for further details on both trips by phone: 651-762-1006, or email: [email protected].

This group will travel together to Martin, Slovakia, on April 18, and return May 4, with a side trip to Eastern Slovakia and reuturning to Minneapolis through Krakow, Poland. Builders will work on putting up walls and painting the new classrooms in the recently purchased building for the Lutheran High School in Martin. For further information and details, contact Joe and Joann Lunders, 651-762-1006 or [email protected] or [email protected].

Educating pre-school children in Martin, Slovakia, July 1-13, 2016

Prayerfully consider joining in the education tradition that St. Andrew’s has supported and enjoyed over these 15 years. In these years we have seen remarkable growth in the people of Slovakia regaining their sense of freedom to worship and desiring to educate their children in the Christian faith. The pre-school program of the Lutheran Academy is just one more way in which our ministry supports their vision of Christian education with the youngest children.

Since 2001 members of St. Andrew’s and partner congregations have taught Vacation Bible School in Martin, Slovakia, during the summer. This year our focus will be with pre-school children which is a growing and expanding program. Parents in Slovakia have seen the importance of a pre-school program as they prepare their children for the elementary school grades of the Lutheran Academy in Martin.

We will provide a pre-school curriculum that includes teaching children music, arts and crafts, Bible stories and educational games. This is a wonderful opportunity to

become involved in this new program educating the youngest children and preparing them for life-long learning.

Pre-school teachers and Peer Ministry leaders will travel together, departing MSP on Friday, July 1, arriving in Vienna on Saturday July 2, and by coach to Martin, where we will stay in the hotel MartInn. We will worship with the Martin Lutheran congregation on Sunday, July 3, and begin our teaching on Monday, July 4, through Friday, July 8. We will leave Martin by coach on Saturday morning, July 9, to catch our flight from Vienna to Florence, Italy, for a four night stay before returning home on Wednesday, July 13.

Equipping High School youth in the Peer Ministry program

July 1-13, 2016

The Peer Ministry program in Slovakia is at a new stage. For many years we taught the stories and now we are helping live the stories. Consider coming along for our third year of equipping the high school youth in Martin, Slovakia, this summer to live in Christ in Slovakia.

Knowing and living our faith can be two different things. To know the faith in our heads can be very different than feeling it in our hearts, having it take hold of our lives, and drawing deeper into relationship with Jesus. In returning to Slovakia for the second year we saw this difference in the high school youth. They have learned the stories in their Lutheran school, but not all of them even go to church or are active in

Couples’ Book Study: Playing TAG Thursdays April 7, 14, 21, 28; May 5, 13; 6:45-8 p.m. Great Hall Cost is: $15 for the book Register online, childcare provided

Tag is a game we played as kids, and it is a game we play in many of our relationships. Making the other one IT so we are not is always the object. Come and join other couples as we learn how to communicate better with each other, laugh alongside each other, and meet other couples from St. Andrew’s.

This class is limited to seven couples.

“One of my favorite take-aways from the class is our precious lists. It is always a great reminder of what I love about Steve. We had couples that were married three years to 50 years in class. You learn from each other’s experiences and that is so amazing. Also, you don’t have to have problems in your marriage/relationship to learn from TAG. It is about being the best partner you can be.” —Jen Stresnak, St. A’s member and class participant spring 2015

Couples’ MinistryA ministry for couples, by couples. God created us to be in relationships, and we need the Holy Spirit to help them grow strong. St. Andrew’s offers a variety of ways for couples’ to proclaim Jesus Christ, live in Christ and serve. We invite you to join a small group, fellowship or service event, Bible studies or retreat to get to know others as well as grow in your relationship with your spouse and Jesus.

a church. They know the stories, but don’t always feel the transformation.

In Peer Ministry we spend little time telling the stories of Jesus and more time sharing how knowing Jesus has transformed the way we live in relationship with each other and ourselves. How we reach out to the stranger, because Christ first reached out to us. How we are able to love those we do not like or agree with, because we are all children of the same heavenly Father. How we can forgive ourselves for what we have done, or left undone, because Christ forgave us and redeemed us on the cross.

Peer Ministry leaders and pre-school teachers will travel together, departing MSP on Friday, July 1, arriving in Vienna on Saturday July 2, and going by coach to Martin, where we will stay in the hotel MartInn. We will worship with the Martin Lutheran congregation on Sunday, July 3, and begin the Peer Ministry program on Monday, July 4 through Friday, July 8. We will leave Martin by coach on Saturday morning, July 9, to catch our flight from Vienna to Florence, Italy, for a four night stay before returning home on Wednesday, July 13.

The Mustard Seed Fund Is Growing!2015 witnessed solid growth in endowment gifts to the Mustard Seed Fund at the Foundation of St. Andrew’s. We now have “seed funds” dedicated to the following missions at the church:

Children’s Bibles, Seminary Scholarships, Habitat for Humanity, West Haven Children’s Home in Jamaica

The earnings from the endowed gifts to these causes will provide money every year to support these vital missions. We also have two new mustard seed gifts now in process that will support international missions and the music ministry at the church. The donors to these mustard seed funds hope that others who share a passion for these programs will join in support of these missions with additional endowment gifts to make these “seeds” blossom into even higher support. If you want to help, or if you have an idea for a mustard seed of your own, contact Lori Goodroad at the church and someone from the Foundation of St. Andrew’s will meet with you to answer questions.

Claiming Your Place at the FireThe Foundation of St. Andrew’s mission statement begins with: We help our members identify their values and create personal legacies, which extend the ministries of St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church. In keeping with that objective we are offering a forum to reflect on the book: Claiming Your Place at the Fire by Richard Leider. We will follow a six-session program developed by Lutheran Social Service to guide discussion around living the second half of your life on purpose. We invite you to come explore ways to grow whole, not old. Look for additional information on this series in the bulletins in March/April.

2016 will be the 25th year St. Andrew’s has helped a needy family achieve home ownership! Let’s celebrate and make this Habitat for Humanity build season something special! Put your faith into action again this year. We are proud to be the #1 church in the metro area in terms of both volunteer-days and sponsorship dollars. Join this important local mission! The house location and timing will be announced in the Bulletin and will be e-mailed to past volunteers.

You may know that Habitat for Humanity is not a charity program. Homeowners make their down payment with 300-500 hours of “sweat equity” and then pay a zero-interest 30-year mortgage for the actual cost of the house. Homeowners are carefully selected from needy applicants: only one in ten qualified applicants is offered one of the approximately 50 homes built each year by volunteers and Habitat families here in the Twin Cities.

A Thank-You note from last summer’s Habitat family:My name is Mimi Birhanu. I came to Minnesota 11 years ago. As a newcomer to America I had many challenges such as food, language, culture, you name it. Reading the Bible and prayer help me to go day by day. In the beginning of 2015, God gave me another miracle in my life — a Habitat for Humanity house! Once God started working in my life, everything was possible to me and even my friends and family. Now when I open my house door it always reminds me of God and St. Andrew’s. I wish if I speak English well to tell you how much I appreciate you with all my heart. Both Lidia and Nathneal so happy since we moved the new house. They experience their own bed room. When I see their freedom to play my eyes feel full of tears. That was my biggest worry when I was living in apartment. Finally our thanks to St. Andrew’s pastors and members, especially volunteers who put in your money, time and everything. God bless you! As Bible say, you will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasions....” 2 Corinthians 9:11. Thank You, Mimi Birhanu, Lidia Asrat, Nathneal Asrat

Hosted by the St. Andrew’s Environmental Stewardship Team

Christian EnvironmentalismMondays in April, 7 p.m., Sanctuary Room 202

We will be discussing the book, “An Introduction to Christian Environmentalism” by Kate Blanchard (daughter of our congregation) and Kevin O’Brien. The authors work to find a common ground for discussion between those who think environmentalism has no place in the church or claim that our involvement in climate change is misguided and those for whom the environment is all there is to consider. It will not only be very educational, it will lead to some wonderful discussion on a timely and pertinent topic. Come and participate! Call Mary Blanchard to sign up and for more information at 651-653-1610.

Paul Douglas – Christian Solutions in a Changing Climate Tuesday, April 5, 7 p.m., Great Hall

Please join us for a positive, solution-focused discussion with Paul Douglas, a local business owner, author, and broadcast television and radio celebrity. As a conservative, a Christian, and a weatherman with more than 30 years experience, Paul is breaking ground in his approach to our changing climate. He will bring to our community an understanding of how we, as Christians, are called to be stewards of God’s gift to us. He will also tell us how caring for the environment is caring for people – how a warming world impacts food supply, health, and availability of natural resources. He will remind us of the incredible legacy we can leave for our children and grandchildren; a livable world with less waste and suffering.

Paul’s approach will focus on how independent, market-driven solutions to climate problems are all around us, and how we can have both a strong economy and a livable climate. As the owner of five businesses, Paul understands how a changing climate provides opportunities for companies to develop creative solutions. Co-sponsored by Minnesota Interfaith Power and Light, a short discussion at the end will explore how communities of faith can work together to care for the earth that God created.

Proclaim Jesus Christ, Live in Christ, Serve!

Empowered by God’s love, we help transform lives, communities and the world so that everyone may know Christ’s healing power.

Missionaries have teamed up with various churches to make a significant impact in Jamaica. We have had representation on the island for three weeks so far this year, and look forward to one more team in March.

Jan. 16 – Feb. 6

What did we do?

Most of our time was spent building Christian relationships and being the hands and feet of Christ.

How did we do this?

We provide medical care (saw over 900 patients in two weeks), dental care (implemented a new program of three fluoride treatments per year for all the children at West Haven), remodeled Delzi’s home and West Haven cottages. We also dug, framed and poured a few sidewalks, built a picnic table and, of course, we played with, fed, taught, and hugged all the children at West Haven.

Our work at Clifton Boys Home included demolition and remodeling sleeping quarters, bathrooms, finishing murals on the music room with Kennardo (one of the boys who lives there), tutoring and games with the boys. We also built three homes (two in the Mo Bay area and one in Callaloo Mews), and we painted almost everywhere we went.

Hope Valley once again has fresh track lines, and a front border wall covered in school colors green and white. Our welders fixed fences and carpenters built a guard’s shack there as well.

Callaloo Mews Basic School was blessed with some fun Bible school activities and songs, fresh yellow classroom walls, new kitchen cupboards, and a fabulous new iron wall and gate for protection.

New and exciting — we were able to take medical care into the basic school one morning, and thanks to our generous home team (that’s you, by the way), we were not only able to build the above-mentioned home in Callaloo Mews, but our March team gets to build a second home. Praise God!

We know we are there to serve God and also included are many opportunities to worship him.

Joy, peace and Jesus.

Pattianne Casselton, St. Andrew’s Mission Jamaica Team Coordinator
