Subject: ChemistryTerm: 2
Topic:Mole Concept Empirical FormulaDate: March 4-8, 2013
Grade: 10 ScienceDuration:120 mins
Students will engage in:
PairingxVisualsSimulation
Peer tutoringxLecturexWhole group instruction
xCooperative learningA projectxTechnology integration
xIndependent activitiesHands-onOther:
General Objectives:
1. Demonstrate an understanding of the moles as the unit for comparison of amounts of matter
Specific Objectives: Students will be able to
1. Determine the ratio of atoms in given compounds
2. Determine the empirical formula of unknown compounds
Lesson connections to previously learned material:
Students will use their knowledge of moles to determine the empirical formula of compounds
IntroductionTeaching strategies/ActivityMaterials/Text References
Write the molecular formula of glucose, potassium dichromate, water and hydrogen peroxide on the board and let students determine the ratio of their atoms.Guided discovery
Class discussionChemistry for CSEC textbook
New Material
The empirical formula of a compound is the ratio of their atoms. For example the compound glucose C6H12O6 has empirical formula CH2O. As the ratio of the atoms are 1:2:1. Group discussionLectureIllustrationIndividual ActivityTextbook, worksheet
New Material
If given an unknown compound, the empirical formula can be determined if the percentage composition of the atoms which make up the compound are known. For example, a 100g of a an unknown has 88.8% oxygen and 11.1% hydrogen. The empirical formula is found by determining the number of moles of each element then determining the ratio of each element.
Empirical formula is H2O. LectureClass DiscussionGroup Activity
Individual ActivityTextbook, Power point presentation
Lesson Recap : Students will determine the empirical formula for given unknown compounds.
Homework given: Students will complete worksheet for empirical formula and also read about the molecular formula of compounds.
