Angie’s List Handbook Update

The Angie’s list handbook that we anticipated publishing for the Highlands residents has been put on hold due to lack of input from the residents. We only received 7 responses, so it is not feasible to publish. Many thanks to the seven who took the time and consid-eration to respond. It was appreciated.

Valerie Gillespie picked up a saxophone for the first time when she was eight and was paid for her first professional gig at the age of fourteen. She majored in Classical Saxophone in college and obtained a Masters Degree in Jazz Saxophone from USF. A well-rounded player, Valerie might be seen one night playing classical pieces with the Florida Orchestra, the next evening playing with a jazz band in the park, then on Sunday morning you will usually find her playing in church. Valerie is an accomplished vocalist as well, with such influences as Diana Krall, Nancy Wilson, Shirley Horn, Carmen McRae, Diane Shuur, and many others. She has played with some of the great entertainers of our time and traveled extensively with the Xavier Cugat Orchestra in the U.S. and Japan.

Please sign up on the sheet on the bulletin board so we have some idea of how to set up the room.

February Meeting Minutes continued from page 1

Chris finished by announcing that Hometown America is sponsoring “A Night of Jazz” with Valerie Gillespie on Thursday, March 8, 2012 from 7:00 to 9:30 p.m. The event is free; however, those attending will need to bring their own drinks and snacks. For those who haven’t seen Ms. Gillespie perform, Chris suggested searching her name on YouTube. A sign-up sheet is posted on the bulletin board in the clubhouse.

Lew Thrasher thanked the Sunshine Committee for all the support he and BJ have received.

John Bongiardina said the bus trip to Tampa Bay Downs will be held on March 21, 2012. Deadline for payment is February 21st. The cost for transportation, admission and lunch is $35 per person. Make checks payable to Anne Lafontaine. There is still seating available and the event is open to Highlands residents, family and friends. A sign-up sheet is posted on the bulletin board in the clubhouse.

Ray Pawlicki reported that the Security Patrol lost two members who moved. Two new members, Ron Haas and Ken White, recently joined. Ray’s goal is to have enough members to be able to patrol each night of the month with each member having to volunteer only one night per month. Ray mentioned that the ladies restroom by the pool is constantly unlocked. He then suggested that residents keep their garage doors closed and that they lock cars parked in driveways. If interested in becoming a member of the Security Patrol, contact Ray Pawlicki.

The next community meeting will be held on Saturday, March 3, 2012.

The meeting was adjourned at 9:25 a.m. Barbara Nicholson, Community Secretary

The Social Committee has reserved some of the best seats in the house at a discount rate for Highlands Residents who would like to see this show together. The $43 price is available as long as 20 or more go. Those attending will have to arrange their own transportation to

Dear Diary, . . .

Dear Diary,

I heard a car honking over and over again and the honk got louder and louder. I looked outside and a long maroon limo was blocking the front door. In fact, it was so long, it was blocking the whole front of my house. I was blocked in my own house. I had a mixture of emotions. I felt angry, surprised and scared. I had never seen a car that long and why was it blocking my front door?

“Who are you?” I asked

The middle-aged man was leaning against the car with his arms crossed. He wore a red had and had a smirk on his face, like he had captured a wild animal or something.

“I came to get you.”

“Why?” I urged and began to get more nervous.

“Because you are dead. It is time to go, now.”

Then I woke up.

This dream was in the back of my mind, dear diary all day long. Now that it is the end of the day, I suddenly realize what the dream meant. I think it meant that I was kind of dead and that I wasn’t living life to the fullest. I think the car that was blocking me symbolized that there were things in my life that were blocking me from living fully and fulfilling my dreams.

One more thing I want to mention Dear Diary is that when I went to the hairdresser today, I met a man (who the others in the shop already knew).

This man told us that he had 6 children and they all had a mental illness. I just wanted to comfort him, but it took me completely off guard. I felt too overwhelmed by this information.

Dear Diary, if that man could have the courage to life a full life with his problems, then I should not have any trouble living fully.

Tomorrow I am going to laugh hard, enjoy friends and family and live life to the fullest. I may do something really weird or crazy.....

Here are some of my favorite quotes about living life to the fullest:

Life is either a daring adventure or nothing. Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature.- Helen Keller

Live life full out. Don't hold back. Be curious and adventurous - live your life to the fullest.

You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream.- C. S. Lewis

We don't stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing. - George Bernard Shaw

To go against the dominant thinking of your friends, of most of the people you see every day,

is perhaps the most difficult act of heroism you can perform. - Theodore H. White

Our thanks to Ann Traub for keeping the list of birds seen and a description of the February birding trip to Circle “B” Bar Reserve, Polk County in Lakeland, Florida. The reserve is one of our favorites as we see a variety of birds.

The group was unable to walk the longer trail called Alligator Alley which runs along the shores of Lake Hancock, as the weather was not cooperating. The birders opted to take Heron Hideout and Marsh Rabbit Run instead which we had never explored. It proved to be spectacular as we added, not one, but three birds to the Highlands Bird Club “life list”. It was a first time for a female Indigo Bunting (featured bird), a Brown-headed Cowbird and a Black-bellied Whistling Duck.

Because of the deteriorating weather conditions the group could not finish Marsh Rabbit Run. It started out cloudy, misty, and then the drizzle turned to a moderately heavy rain and the group had to turn back and take shelter at the Nature Center.

TWEETS and CHIRPS from the Highlands Birding Group

FEATURED BIRD: Female Indigo Bunting The female Indigo Bunting pales in comparison to the male. She is similar to finches, brown in color with wings having a faint blue cast and a light tan chest with faint streaking while the male is a vibrant blue with dark tail markings and on wings.

The Indigo Buntings migrate at night and have been known to come to bird feeders before insects are plentiful. Males are usually the ones you see because of their vibrant color blue. It breeds in the panhandle of Florida and then moves to the Tampa Bay area and then further south on the peninsula. The female builds the nest and can have two broods a year. The nest is cup-like and eggs are pale blue of which there are 3 to 4. They are common in woodlands and old field edges and are fairly common in abandoned citrus groves. To crack or hull seeds, this bird uses his heavy conical bill. A unique feature is they navigate between their breeding and wintering grounds by the stars, which was discovered by scientists during an experiment. Fortunately they are not endangered or threatened, but are protected.

UPDATE ON WHOOPING CRANES

In our October issue of our newsletter we discussed the Whooping Crane migration which began on October 9th from a refuge in Wisconsin. The “Class of 2011” had an arduous, very difficult journey. Weather was against them dealing with rain, high winds aloft, and constant down times. Always mindful of the birds safety, volunteers made sure they were fed and penned during these times at different refuges on their trek to Florida. The ultra-light which was leading them to Florida had mechanical trouble and then the FAA interfered with an issue of compensation for the pilots flying the ultra-lights (volunteers). The FAA gave Operation Migration a one-time waiver and this dispute is still trying to resolved.

Two of the cranes, for reasons unknown, decided they did not want to follow their “mother” and the flight plan any more. This was a first-time event in the eleven years conducting the migration. The “crane rodeo” lasted two hours. The biologists decided “it was time to concede to the greater influence of nature, and for this year, stop trying to engineer a behavior we don’t really understand."

From the Highlands Resident Managers Judy & Larry Mack Office: 352-518-4607

Spring is just around the corner. It’s a perfect time to begin “spring-cleaning’. I’ve included a few housekeeping items: If you have questions about the following, call me, or peruse The Highlands @ Scotland Yards, “Guidelines for Living.” It’s a clearly written guide for peaceful enjoyment of the community. I do apologize to all of the ‘snowbirds’ for the particular growing season in Florida. Soon you will enjoy the delicious scent of orange blossom from the grove but you will miss the spectacular display of Crape Myrtle trees planted throughout the community which occurs in mid-summer. Unfortunately, summertime is also a prolific weed growing time. When you depart, don’t forget to assign someone to care for your shrubs and planting beds. If your home needs washed, schedule it now. If your planting beds need to be weeded or your shrubs need groomed, arrange this now. Please include your site number on your check. All guests must be registered at the community office. A guest bracelet is to be worn by all guests. Stop by my

office. I like to welcome your guests to the community. Please take care of the amenities, equipment, and furniture, as you would your personal possessions. Thanks to all

who return chairs and tables to their proper place. Parking is not permitted under the Portico or on the grass. Driveways, please!

All pet owners are required to keep your pet on a lead and you must pick up any droppings, so don’t forget to carry a plastic bag. Your neighbors are complaining.

(Continued from the previous page) There would have been no time to acclimate the cranes to the wetlands of Chassahowitzka. The cranes normally undergo a gentle release into the wild, getting used to their winter home, the night sky, the foraging and landscape. The wildlife biologists called it quits on January 30th and released the cranes on February 13th at their last stop in Alabama at Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge. The good news is the cranes are staying put and foraging in the refuge. The “Class of 2011” will migrate on their own to Wisconsin in the spring according to the biologists.

Ceramics Classes

Ceramics classes are held every Tuesday from 11:30 to 1:30PM. There is a $5 charge per session: $4 for the instructor, $1 to the kitty to keep supplies stocked. A large selection of glazes and acrylics is available in our craft room for student use and our own kiln is used to fire all pieces. A small selection of bisque pieces is available from which to choose, but for greater choice students are encouraged to obtain their own greenware or bisque pieces from local suppliers. Regular participants are to bring their own brushes and cleaning supplies, however first timers can borrow supplies to see if they like it enough to continue before they purchase their own supplies.

Chris Weegar

Bunco

There are currently four separate groups playing Bunco; three women’s groups and one co-ed. Each meets once a month. The women’s groups meet in player’s homes. The co-ed group plays in the clubhouse card room. The women’s games are held the second Monday at 7PM, the third Tuesday at 7PM, and the fourth Wednesday at 6:30PM of each month. The co-ed group meets on a Sunday toward the end of each month at 6:30PM. The cost of each session is $3.00, which is distributed as prize money.

Players are listed as regulars or substitutes. All the groups need subs from time to time and sometimes replacements. If you are interested in playing in any of the women’s games contact Jackie Davio. If you are interested in joining the co-ed group, contact Pat Carey.

Shuffleboard

Anyone interested in playing should meet at the shuffleboard courts on Thursday mornings at 10:00 AM. All are welcome, and no experience is necessary.

Scott Lyons

Thanks go to Hometown America and Ada and John Marr for printing the newsletter. HTA underwrites all printing and web publication charges and Ada and John’s Zephyrhills Printing Zone (813-780-7545) handles all reproduction. Ada and John also provide printing services for the Social Committee and the Sunshine Committee.

Mah Jongg Players

There is organized mah jongg play at the clubhouse most days of the week. Most sessions have at least one non-betting table at which play is slower to encourage beginners. Players meet on Sundays at 1:00 PM, Monday afternoons at 12:30 PM, Wednesdays at 6:30 PM, Thursdays at 1:00 PM, and Fridays at 2:00 PM. If you are interested in learning to play mah jongg, contact any mah jongg player for referral to an instructor.

Marathons are held the first Friday of the month, starting at 9:15 AM. We play from 12-16 rounds, depending on the speed of play and time available, with a break midway for lunch. $5 per player is collected for the prize fund for the marathon. All players are welcome.

Each month marathon tournament players bring some salad ingredient that is then shared between all for great pot-luck salad. A sign-up sheet is on the bulletin board so we don’t end up with too much of one item. February’s marathon winners were - 1st place - Lucille Kraepel, - 2nd place - Vicki Rudegeair.
