Living, Loving in the

Here and Now

It is good that we are here—joined in community for

Sunday worship, here, in this moment of prayer. Our

lives are so hectic and fast-paced that it’s often hard to

enjoy just being in the present moment with God. It’s not

just the pressure of work, but the added responsibilities

of home. You know the routineCgetting the kids to

school; getting to work on time;

leaving from work; running a few

errands; preparing dinner; going

back out to pick up the kids from

practice; then back home for

dinner, dishes, laundry,

homework; and then finally to

bed on time so you can get up

early and start again.

But just stop! Take the time to

enjoy the grace of the Eucharist,

to rejoice in one another and

savor Christ who reveals his love

to you. Give yourself this gift.

Each moment has power, poetry,

and grace. Each instant is a gift

from God, and each moment is

an opportunity to encounter

Jesus Christ. It’s an occasion to return within ourselves

and turn back to our Father who is eagerly waiting for

us.

It’s good to be here—not somewhere else, not in

another time when we were happier, healthier, or life

was easier and simpler. Right here, right now, right

where God has you is where he is revealing his love. It

may not be easy, but this is where God is, and it’s good

to reflect on the graces each moment presents.

—Fr. Mark Haydu, LC

GOD FORGIVES

The Lord said to Joshua, “Today I have removed the reproach of Egypt from you.” After forty

years of wandering in the desert, this hard-headed people have finally reached the Promised Land.

No more do they eat the manna in the desert, but they partake of the fruits of their new homeland.

God has kept the promise to their parents in Egypt. Even though they were a sinful people, many

times questioning God and even worshiping false gods, God has forgiven them and fulfilled the promise. The “take

-away” for us is that there is no sin that is unforgivable. We may have offended our neighbors, given a bad

example to someone, even worshiped the false gods of money and power. But God is a merciful God, true to the

words spoken to us. God forgives all and calls us back to love.

DIOS PERDONA

Quizá hayamos ofendido a nuestro prójimo, dado mal ejemplo a alguien, incluso

Gracias a Dios, ¡somos cristianos! Lamentablemente,

El filósofo romano-español Séneca (siglo I)

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Today, “Laetare Sunday,” breaks the somberness of Lent for a little rejoicing, and the readings all summon us

to an awareness of reconciliation. One of the best-loved stories of our tradition is today’s Gospel story of the

runaway son and the prodigal father. Prodigal, of course, is an adjective meaning “spendthrift or extravagant to a

degree bordering on recklessness,” and although the boy maxes out the credit cards, it is really the father who is

prodigal with forgiveness.

Part of the excitement of this Laetare Sunday is rooted in the ancient catechumenate. Long ago, midway

through Lent, the “elect” were focusing more and more on the gift of reconciliation accomplished for them by

Christ and about to be realized in the Easter sacraments they were preparing to celebrate. In some places, the

elect were even bedecked with roses on this day. A person bedecked with roses sticks out in a crowd; a person

formed by the Eucharist and committed to living a life of reconciliation does, too. That’s you!

ST. GIANNA RESPECT LIFE

Former abortion worker Abby Johnson

said that there is a tremendous gap

between the pro-life and the pro-choice

advocates. She noted that there is a lack

of commitment and enthusiasm in the Culture of Life.

Bernard Nathanson former abortionist, stated if those

in the pews had put their outrage into action the evil of

abortion would be non-existent. Germans of the WWII

generation said they were caught up in a mass

hypnosis of the Nazi war machine propaganda.

Whatever excuse for the propagation of evil the “lack

of commitment” or the “hypnosis,” or the

“propaganda,” will we one day wake up in horror from

the decades of abortion and admit we were complicit

by not acting. This month St. Gianna volunteers are

praying at the abortion center in Savannah. Please

join us in this peaceful vigil on Thursdays and

Fridays.

King Parish in Mt. Pleasant have sent more than 5000

Jack Gigante, a student at John Paul II Catholic School and his friend Jared, are working with the

South Carolina Department of Social Services to help children in foster care and in shelters. The

children need something to carry their belongings. So many children use a garbage or grocery bag

when they move from one foster home to another. We want them to have the pride of having

something of their own in which they can carry their personal items. We also would like them to

have backpacks for school because education is the one great equalizer in this country.

Thank you for helping with this project.
