8th Sunday of Ordinary Time, YEAR C, March 3, 2019
The Scriptures proclaimed in today’s celebration invite us to look beyond
appearances. The clear and concise images of the Book of Ecclesiastes
recall to our minds the style of ancient proverbs, and warn that we should
always listen to the words and reasoning other people use before we
establish important relationships. In the Gospel, Jesus places this warning in
the context of the relationship between a teacher and student, and between
brother and sister—the most precious of all relationships, because it is rooted
in faith and in the community of disciples. A hypocrite is a brother or sister
who sees defects of others but not his or her own. For Jesus, one must first
attend to and heal that which is opposed to mercy and reconciliation within his
or her own heart before accusing others. Jesus frequently reprimanded the
Pharisees for this attitude, and His criticism applies to us also as we easily
give in to the hypocritical point of view described in the Gospel.…Christ’s
victory helps us to see beyond appearances to create loving relationships that
nurture our faith in Christ, who brings us together and sustains us with His
grace. © OCP 2019. All rights reserved.
ASH WEDNESDAY, March 6, begins THE SEASON OF LENT:
This is the day we go to church clean and come home dirty. Instead of fasting
and doing penance in private, today we proclaim our penance to the world.
“Did you get your ashes?” people will ask. It may be better to ask “Did you
mean your ashes?” The ashes we receive today, the Dies Cinerum (day of
ashes), are the result of burning blessed palm fronds from the previous year’s
Palm Sunday. Our practice of receiving these ashes probably began in the
eighth century. The distribution of ashes was formally instituted by Pope
Urban II at the Synod of Benevento in 1091. Text, Dale J. Sieverding and Bari Colombari © 2007 OCP. All rights reserved.
Liturgical changes mark the Lenten season at all Masses, omitting the
Gloria and alleluias, and singing the Penitential Rite on the Sundays of
Lent. On Friday evenings, Stations of the Cross will follow the 7:00 pm
Mass, with a different focus each week.
NEXT SUNDAY, March 10, we celebrate the “Rite of Sending” with the
members of our RCIA at the 10:30 am Mass. Later in the day, they will
celebrate the “Rite of Election” with Bishop Perez at the Cathedral. Please
continue to keep our candidates and catechumen in your prayers. During this
season of reflection and conversion for all of us, we are called to pray, fast
and give alms. As recipients of God’s boundless mercy and love, how can we
give more of ourselves?
BELLS: Rehearsal Thursday, March 7, at 5:30 pm in the Church.
SJV CHOIR: Choir members will sing at both the 5:30 pm & 7:00 pm Ash
Wednesday Masses this week, and at the 10:30 am Mass next Sunday,
March 10, as we celebrate the RCIA Rite of Sending. Regular rehearsal on
Thursday, March 7, at 7:00 pm.
TRADITIONAL Stations of the Cross this Friday, March 8, following the
7:00 pm Mass.
COFFEE AND DONUTS WILL BE
SERVED IN THE JOHN PAUL II
ROOM TODAY,

This Wednesday is Ash Wednesday. As we begin the Lenten season, all
PSR classes will take a few minutes to discuss ways that students and
families can celebrate Lent. Rice bowls were also sent home with PSR
students today.
Last Sunday, Mr. Sam Discpenza’s 7th graders in PSR took their class on
the road with a visit to Salida Woods. This year, all of our students at St.
John Vianney have been learning about kindness and growing to
understand that living this way is very much like Christ. The 7th graders
spent some time talking with residents about what they have learned and
experienced.
All second grade First Communicants should have received a letter about
the upcoming First Communion interviews. These letters will inform you of
the member of the pastoral staff who will meet with you and your child. We
ask that you please make your appointment as soon as possible. These
meetings should take place between March 10 and March 31. Remember
that you do not need to have the Blessed book completed before this
conference, but you should be making significant progress at this point.
A retreat for our Confirmation candidates will take place on Saturday,
March 23, from 10:30 am to 5:00 pm in the Social Center. This important
day of reflection will be presented by students from SENT Ministries of
Franciscan University. These students are able to present a unique and
appropriate perspective on faith to our ninth grade Confirmation candidates.
Also look for the Confirmation class at the 4:00 Mass that day, as we
conclude with the Eucharist.
Our Lenten Cluster Parish Mission will take place on March 11, 12, and 13
at 7:00 pm in the Church. Fr. Kenneth Paulli, O.F.M. will lead us on a
journey with Mary, our Mother, as we celebrate God’s triumphs and graces.
All are invited and encouraged to attend one or all of these inspirational
evenings.
We will also be offering a Lenten Formation Event for adults as we continue
the Robert Barron video series on The Mass on March 18 and 25 and
April 1 in the John Paul II Room at 7:00 pm. Fr. Johns, Alex Spenik, and
Laura McBride will offer reflections and lead discussion on these videos at
each session. Bishop Barron’s unique and inspiring descriptions and
explanations can help engage us more deeply in the Lenten season and
our celebration of the Lord’s Passion, Death and Resurrection each
Sunday. We hope you will join us!

PASTOR’S PAGE
Dear Parishioners,
I had a great vacation in the Caribbean a few weeks
ago. The weather was beautiful and it was a very
relaxing good time with friends. I came home on last
Sunday early in the morning—ready for the arrival of
Lent this week on March 6 so that I can start fasting
and simplifying things in my life! Cruises are great but I
sometimes lack the discipline I need to say no to some
of the many options presented during those seven
days at sea. The food and beverages are way too
plentiful! However, I am not quite ready to start the
fasting just now since this is the Celtic Weekend and I
will be celebrating with close to 500 great people on
Saturday night at the Celtic Ball and with over 325
people on Sunday at the Hooley. Please pray that both
events go well and that our guests have a safe and a
fun time. Please pray, too, that it is a profitable event
for the parish, the school and the All Saints
Endowment Fund. We have some very generous
Celtic Weekend donors and sponsors each year and a
great committee who works so hard to make this
weekend come off so well. I am grateful for all that
they and others do to support this event. This two-day
event made over $50,000 last year and I am hoping for
an even greater profit this year since we are also
celebrating the 50th anniversary of the parish. I will let
you know in the coming weeks how well we do.
One third of the Celtic Weekend profits goes to the All
Saints Endowment Fund each year. Some friends and
I started that fund shortly after I became the pastor of
the parish to support our parish school in a variety of
ways and to provide tuition assistance to students in
need or to students who excelled in one way or another
during the course of the school year. I mentioned
recently that the fund is at about $800,000 at this point
thanks to the Celtic Weekend, some other fundraisers,
and the generosity of donors who have established
scholarships over the years. It has been my hope that
the fund will reach the one million dollar point prior to
the time I retire as pastor. A very generous benefactor
in the parish told me that he wants to help me reach
this goal during this 50th anniversary year we are now
celebrating. He has offered to match donations to the
Endowment Fund this year up to $100,000. That
means that if I can encourage donations totaling
$100,00 from our parish and school benefactors in this
jubilee year we will reach my personal goal of
$1,000,000 by the end of 2019. Please let me know if
you or any of your friends would like to help make this
happen. One third of this year’s Celtic Weekend profits
will start the process of raising this desired amount.
Again, as I have said often, thank you for your
generous support of all the good causes at this parish!
When I was on vacation last month, Father Peter
Morris took my place at the Lake Geauga Habitat for
Humanity “Primrose” Home Dedication on Sunday,
February 17. He is pictured above with the new home
owner, Kirsten, and her son, as they prepare to enter
into their newly-blessed home for the first time. Thank
you to our parishioners who helped raise some funds
to build this new home, to the parishioners who worked
as volunteers, to Bob and Dennis Hosler Construction
Company who did the excavation, concrete work,

foundation and roof installation, and to Dave Chabut
and John Rogers for their assistance in procuring the
land on which the home was built. It was a good
project for the parish and another opportunity for us to
practice a corporal work of mercy—sheltering the
homeless. Thank you also for the contributions given in
your Poor and Needy Envelope during the month of
February. These funds have been given to the Lake
County Shelter for the Homeless, Project Hope in
Painesville. Lent is a good season for us to continue to
give alms to those in need. The collection on Ash
Wednesday will be another opportunity for you to do
so. Each year we share the Ash Wednesday collection
with Birthright of Lake County and our own Saint
Vincent de Paul Society. Keep up the good work.
As I said above, Lent does begin this Wednesday, on
March 6, and Masses are celebrated here at the parish
at 8:00 am, 12 Noon, 5:30 and 7:00 pm. Mass will also
be celebrated at the parish elementary school that day
and at Salida Woods Assisted Living for the residents
who live there, their families and the staff. Remember
that Ash Wednesday is a day of fast and abstinence—
simple meals and no meat. Watch the bulletin for
information about coming Lenten programs, especially
the annual Parish Mission on March 11, 12 and 13.
The parish mission is a great way for a parishioners to
come together and do something special for the season
of Lent. Father Ken Paulli is a Franciscan priest who
will give us some great things to think about and to act
on during this special penitential season. He is our
mission presenter and he comes to us highly
recommended. He will be speaking at all the Masses
next weekend to encourage your participation in the
Lenten Mission. I encourage you to mark the dates
and times on your calendars and to consider inviting
some family and friends to join you, especially those
who may have grown away from the Church and may
be looking for a chance to return. I think all of us know
some people like that. Please also remember to pray
for the success of the Mission and to ask the Lord to
touch the hearts of those who may need to be there,
folks who may need to hear a reminder of how much
God does love them and how he is close at hand to
help them.
With the start of Lent comes the Fish Fry on the Fridays
of Lent in the Social Center. Hope to see you there
and at the Stations of the Cross. Fr. Johns
This week on Featured Founders, we bring to you the
story of Patty Hall. Patty originally hailed from Eastlake,
Ohio and attended St. Mary Magdalene Parish in her
youth. From there, Patty and her parents moved to
Immaculate Conception Parish in Willoughby. There,
Patty was married and her three children were
baptized. Patty was there on December 8, 1969 at the
first Mass of St. John Vianney Parish and also
recounted fondly how excited the whole community
was with the foundation of the new parish. When
remembering her first experiences with St. John
Vianney Parish, one of the stories from that first Mass
Patty treasures still. After the Mass was held, Patty and
her children stayed behind to help put the chairs and
such away. While they were working, Fr. Kline came
around and asked if he could help. Patty remembers
this as the start of their friendship and they were friends
ever since. Throughout her years here at St. John
Vianney, Patty has helped out as a lector and
commentator for Mass, a member of the choir,
women’s renewal, Festival, and PSR (including home
lessons for children who could not attend school).
When All Saints School was starting, Patty was there
helping to paint classrooms and get the school ready
for session. This year she celebrates 55 years of
marriage to her husband Tom. When asked how long
she has been at the parish,
Patty is fond of reminding
people, “I came with Fr.
Kline!” Thank you Patty for
what you have done to enrich
this parish. May God Bless
You!

FESTIVAL COMMENTS OF THE WEEK: MAIN FOOD PAVILION: NEEDS MORE VARIETY, MORE RUNNERS WITH HOT FOOD,
NEEDS TO HAVE FASTER ORDERING AND SERVING.
The Food Pavilion serves a wide variety of food freshly prepared in
our Social Center. There are moments when the hot food takes a
few minutes to come out. To add variety the last few years, we have
added daily specials such as cabbage and noodles, wraps and
corned beef sandwiches. In order to add more things to the
weekend menu, other favorites would have to be removed. No
matter how long the line for food is, it rarely takes more than 10
minutes from getting in line to paying at the register. Many have
commented that ours is the most efficiently run food areas that they
have been to.
