Easter Sunday: The Resurrection of the Lord Jubilee Year of Mercy
This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad. Alleluia! Easter is always, but especially in this Jubilee Year of Mercy, the victory of God’s gentle but invincible mercy raising up Jesus, “faithful witness, the first-born of the dead” (Revelation 1:5), “first-born among many brothers [and sisters]” (Romans 8:29), conquering death in all its forms, in all of us in the human family. In Luke’s Vigil Gospel, heavenly messengers send the women forth: “Remember what [Jesus] said to you” (Luke 24:6). In John’s Gospel, the empty tomb likewise “sends forth” Mary Magdalene, Peter, and the Beloved Disciple, who believe though they do not fully understand. Finally, Luke’s evening “Emmaus” Gospel sends us forth, as “missionaries of mercy,” assuring us that we will encounter the Risen Lord, today and every day, in “the stranger” we meet along life’s journey, in “the Word that makes our hearts burn within us,” and “in the breaking of bread” (see Luke 24:32, 35).
—Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
I am the Resurrection and the Life, says the Lord; Whoever believes in me will never die.
We rejoice in the victory of Jesus Christ over death; By rising from the tomb to new life He gives us new hope and promise.
It is Christ who enlightens our hearts And homes with his love.
It is Christ, risen from the dead, Who is our source of hope, joy and comfort.
May our Risen Lord fill your home with light and love.

What was happening in the Sixth Century? On January 2, 533, Pope John II was elected. He was to remain in office for slightly over two years un l his death on May 8, 535. John was born to a Roman Family in 470 AD and named Mecurius. He became a priest and was highly esteemed. Upon the death of Pope Boniface II, the Bishops elected Mercurius as the new Roman Pon ff.
Believing that his name, Mercurius, was inappropriate because it was the name of a pagan god, Mercury, he adopted the Papal Name of Pope John II. His choice was made to honor Pope John I, who had reigned a decade earlier, and who had been arrested by Theodoric, King of the Ostrogoths, and died in prison of neglect. John II was the first Pope to reign under a name other than the one given to him in bap sm.
Faith Formation & Enrichment
The pope making the greatest impact on the sixth century was Pope Gregory I. Born in 540 in Rome into the family of a Senator and Prefect of the City, Gordianus and his wife Silvia. Gregory’s home was on the street where once Roman Emperors lived. His great, great grandfather had been Pope Felix who reigned from 484 to 493 AD. Being well connected to both church and state, Gregory received an excellent educa on. He excelled in everything he studied. Gregory was well prepared for a career in government or law. Instead, upon his father’s death, he turned the family villa into a monastery and became a monk. Gregory was ordained during his monas c years, and in 579 was commissioned by Pope Pelagius II to the office of Ambassador to the Imperial Court in Constan nople. By this me, the Roman Empire of the West, and its power structure was nearly defunct. Gregory, accompanied by a delega on of both clergy and laity, travelled to Constan nople to ask the Eastern Emperor for military assistance in resis ng the encroachments of the Lombards. The Eastern Empire was facing its own invading armies of the Slavs and Persians, and so Gregory’s supplica ons were unsuccessful. During his me in Constan nople, Gregory engaged in a number of theological disputes with the Patriarch Eutychius with whom he disagreed. Eventually Gregory succeeded in obtaining an imperial decree demanding the burning of Eutychius’ wri ngs.
When Gregory returned to Rome in 586, he found a city suffering greatly from the plague. Up to a third of the popula on died and in 590, Pope Pelagius II also contracted the plague and died of it. By popular acclaim, Gregory was elected as the new pope. Gregory felt a necessity of centralizing power and establishing authority. Because the Roman Government had become a crumbling façade, he appointed bishops and priests to assume du es previously belonging to the civil government. Partly because of Gregory’s conflict with the Patriarch Eutychius, he declared that the Bishop of Rome had authority over all other Bishops and that only the Bishop of Rome was permi ed to use the tle of Pope (which before had been a common tle used by all bishops). For the most part, the Western Churches complied with this decree. The Eastern Churches mostly ignored it, which would, a few centuries later, lead to a complete schism between Eastern and Western Christendom. But Gregory did understand the power of the papacy to be servant leadership, as he was also the first to use “Servant of the servants of God” as a papal tle.
Gregory was a great reformer of the liturgy, composing new liturgies and rearranging elements of the mass. He placed the Our Father a er the Consecra on, where it remains today, and included the 9-part Kyrie near the beginning of the mass, where it also remains. He created a new Roman Missal, omi ng some ac ons of the Mass, and adding others, as well as rewri ng many liturgical texts. He is credited with the beginnings of plain chant, a musical style which would see further development in the eighth and ninth centuries and today is known as Gregorian Chant.
And, so, the history of the Church con nues.
