Is it a Stop Sign,or just a Yield?
A Lenten Journey - Week 4
You Are Christ’s hAnds
Christ has no body now on earth but yours, no hands but yours no feet but yours,Yours are the eyes through which is to look out Christ’s compassion to the worldYours are the feet with which he is to go about doing good;Yours are the hands with which he is to bless men now.

What I really want to say . . .
We are halfway through the Lenten Journey. We’ve had 3 Lenten Sundays and there will be 3 more. Anytime we have a period of time when we are committed to something, it’s often the halfway part that is the most difficult. It’s easy to start a new diet or workout program but after a few weeks, you tend to have to buckle down, power through and re-commit or it falls to the wayside. I think it’s true about Lent. Some might have started out with a commitment to our Lenten devotional or perhaps you gave up something for Lent or took on something new. It’s a good time to take a moment to assess where you are on this journey.
As we have traveled this Lenten season, we’ve used different ways to “celebrate the arts” and inspire our journey. An eclectic variety of musical genres, photography, poems. And as I was thinking about this halfway point, I couldn’t help but think of this poem by Derek Walcott. He died just last week, so his work has been on my mind. When I first studied his poems, he had just won the Nobel Prize a year earlier. I don’t remember if this poem was a part of that coursework or if I discovered it later but it has always been powerful for me. We used it on Wednesday night at Vespers and it resonated with many. And so, I’m hopeful it is meaningful to you. As the arts so often do, I hope it nourishes your soul for the next half of this journey together.
love After love
The time will come when, with elation you will greet yourself arriving at your own door, in your own mirror and each will smile at the other’s welcome,
and say, sit here. Eat. You will love again the stranger who was your self.Give wine. Give bread. Give back your heart to itself, to the stranger who has loved you
all your life, whom you ignored for another, who knows you by heart. Take down the love letters from the bookshelf,
the photographs, the desperate notes, peel your own image from the mirror. Sit. Feast on your life.

Now let us follow Jesus / the length’ning of these daysTo set our face, alongside his / on Zion fix our gaze. And as we walk along the way / his parables to shareOf a God who welcomes everyone / if we ourselves but dare.
Along our Lenten journey / we trace the path he trodAnd in our lives we shape as well / the image of our God.This path that leads to wood and nails / and culminates in deathIs, too, the path where we partake / in God’s own Holy Breath.

Scripture for Sunday, March 26
Say: The scripture reading today is Matthew 10:5-15
Listen for God to speak:
These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: ‘Go nowhere among the Gentiles, and enter no town of the Samaritans, but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. As you go, proclaim the good news, “The kingdom of heaven has come near.” Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out demons. You received without payment; give without payment. Take no gold, or silver, or copper in your belts, no bag for your journey, or two tunics, or sandals, or a staff; for labourers deserve their food. Whatever town or village you enter, find out who in it is worthy, and stay there until you leave. As you enter the house, greet it. If the house is worthy, let your peace come upon it; but if it is not worthy, let your peace return to you. If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, shake off the dust from your feet as you leave that house or town. Truly I tell you, it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgement than for that town.
Reader: The Word of God for the people of God.Community: Thanks be to God.
