Panther Enrichment Program

PROGRAM VISION:

The Panther Enrichment Program’s vision is to be one of the State’s leaders in offering programs when school is not in session, to provide opportunities for students to go beyond the standard curriculum with

additional learning opportunities.

PROGRAM MISSION:

The program mission is to provide opportunities for personal growth, self-improvement and academic achievement among the students of Frankfort Independent School District.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

REGISTRATION: All registration forms (page 40) should be filled out and turned in

or online registration (http://www.frankfort.kyschools.us/pep.aspx) must be completed by March 15, 2019.

BREAKFAST / LUNCH: The Spring Panther Enrichment Program is offering FREE breakfast and lunch as a part of

Programs Overview Frankfort Independent Schools is embarking upon a year of revamped enrichment programs for our

students. Our goal is to provide learning experiences for students from K – 12, that would be available

during our intercession. We hope all families can find something that will be of interest to them and their

students. Please visit the PEP page on Frankfort’s new website to view this guide and registration

information; utilize the ONLINE registration option at http://www.frankfort.kyschools.us/pep.aspx.

SCHOOL SPONSORED PROGRAMS:

These are PEP offerings that are being led or coordinated by our Frankfort Independent School staff

members. Our staff are dedicating a week (or more) of their intercession to building a quality and enjoyable

experience for students. You will see their names listed with the PEP information; they will coordinate the

final details for these programs and may reach out to parents via email or phone. Some of these PEP

offerings will have a nominal fee and classes will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

COMMUNITY SPONSORED PROGRAMS:

These are PEP offerings that are being led and coordinated by our Community Partners and local

businesses. Our partners have dedicated time and resources during our intercession to offer FIS students

great experiences, at a reduced cost. You will see their names listed with the PEP information; they will

coordinate the final details of their program and may require additional registration information from

parents. Please pay close attention to any correspondence that you receive for your child to participate.

Some of these PEP offerings will have fees as well. Classes will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

Bus transportation will be provided to SSS and FHS daily for in-district students to participate in the PEP

classes; transportation needs MUST be notated on the registration form. Other transportation

information is also notated– see each PEP offering for those details.

Financial Assistance and Course Fee Information Frankfort Independent Schools strives to provide a quality and enriching experience for all students

that participate in the Panther Enrichment Programs. Many of the PEP offerings will have a cost

associated with it. However, we fully understand the limitations of each family’s budget and their

ability to pay for these additional expenses. We are offering financial assistance to those families that would like to access PEP but need financial help in doing so. For any School

sponsored PEP offerings, financial assistance is available. Community sponsored PEP course

fees are set by the business and financial assistance is also available for those programs through

Frankfort Independent Schools.

The children will get to participate in the vault, beam, bar, and floor! We will do a show case on Friday for parents from 10:30am to 11:30am. Pre-requisites: Must dress appropriately for athletic activity, including tennis shoes and athletic attire (shorts, t-shirts, no blue jeans, no open toe or open back shoes). Prototype will provide group basketball instruction and competition for 3rd grade to 6th grade students. Athletes will work on skill development and have fun competing with their peers. A unique blend of choral and art instruction! Students will spend part of their time each day with Mrs. Maria Bartholomew, Choral Camp Director, learning the basics (and more) of choral music. Children will present a short Choral Performance on Friday at 11:30am to showcase the songs they’ve mastered throughout the week. Students will also work with Mrs. Elle Travis, Art Camp Director, for artistic instruction including color mixing and composition basics. The finished product will be 2 large scale painted murals in the children’s hallway. These will be viewed in an Open House setting following the Choral Performance. Each day students will also receive a short inspirational devotion to kick start their day with topics such as bullying, kindness, and more! Learn to create your own graphic novel. Students will learn to express themselves through writing, drawing and collage. We will take inspiration from graphic novels found at the library. King’s Center Mural Project Roaming Studio, Toby Penney Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday (Does not have to attend all days) King’s Center 8:00am – 11:00am Course Fee: $70 for the week Pre-requisites: Student should wear clothing that can be messy. Some art materials will stain clothing. We will discuss community & personal identity and explore how color and patterns connect us with perceived associations. Students will create personal scale collages featuring their own silhouettes that are constructed of reclaimed fabrics, paper, and paint on canvas. We will then learn how to translate these smaller images into larger representations onto the courtyard wall at the Kings Center. All students will have the opportunity to participate in making their own artwork and painting the mural. I would like to show the individual and community piece side by side at the end of the week to highlight the student’s efforts. Instructor email: [email protected]

All students will have the opportunity to participate in making their own artwork and painting the mural. Pre-requisites: Students do not *need* to provide any materials, however, they could consider bringing in interesting objects from their homes that are about to get thrown away. This could include old cushions, clothing, newspaper, paper bags etc. Students do need to come dressed for getting dirty because we will be using paper mache and paint during our time together. In this workshop students will learn some of the essential skills to making puppets out of junk. We will use items collected from the waste stream, mostly cardboard, but the sky's the limit (!) and turn them into characters or props that can come alive through performance or photography. Steel Drum Amelia Berry Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday (Should attend all days) Second Street School Band Room 8:00am – 11:00am Course Fee: Free The steel drum, or "steel pan" as it's known in its native Trinidad, is a fun and versatile instrument that can make beautiful music of all kinds, from calypso to classical to funk. Students who sign up must attend AT LEAST THREE days of this four-day camp. We will learn to play one or two simple songs in a small ensemble, and be ready to perform them by the end of the week. HeartBEATS Hip Hop Music Production Marlin McKay Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday (one-day field trip) (Should attend all days) Frankfort High School Library 8:00am – 11:00am Course Fee: $60.00 for the week The HeartBeats course offers students the ability to learn about beat making through the historical contextualization of Hip Hop, one of few art forms created in the U.S., while providing active learning on today's leading music production software, Ableton. Students will learn the history of Hip Hop, its governing principles of Peace, Love, Unity, and Having Fun, as well as techniques in songwriting and using music technology. In addition, students will learn how the Fundamentals of Music - Melody, Rhythm, Harmony and Form - are used to create music and how to effectively use the Ableton PUSH 2 software in conjunction with hardware such as mics, cables, interfaces, and monitors. A unique blend of choral and art instruction! Students will spend part of their time each day with Mrs. Maria Bartholomew, Choral Camp Director, learning the basics (and more) of choral music. Children will present a short Choral Performance on Friday at 11:30am to showcase the songs they’ve mastered throughout the week. Students will also work with Mrs. Elle Travis, Art Camp Director, for artistic instruction including color mixing and composition basics. The finished product will be 2 large scale painted murals in the children’s hallway. These will be viewed in an Open House setting following the Choral Performance. Each day students will also receive a short inspirational devotion to kick start their day with topics such as bullying, kindness, and more! King’s Center Mural Project Roaming Studio, Toby Penney Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday (Does not have to attend all days) King’s Center 8:00am – 11:00am Course Fee: $70 for the week Pre-requisites: Student should wear clothing that can be messy. Some art materials will stain clothing.

We will discuss community & personal identity and explore how color and patterns connect us with perceived associations. Students will create personal scale collages featuring their own silhouettes that are constructed of reclaimed fabrics, paper, and paint on canvas. We will then learn how to translate these smaller images into larger representations onto the courtyard wall at the Kings Center. All students will have the opportunity to participate in making their own artwork and painting the mural.
