When it comes to historical buildings, preservation is a given. Care is taken touphold and protect the structural integrityof these sites while also maintaining theperiod details that make these culturaltouchstones worthy of preservation. Butwhat about the landscapes—the fields, yards, gardens, or tracts of land—that housethese buildings? Many in the preservation, architecture, and activist communitiesunderstand that caring for the landssurrounding these sites, as well as othernatural areas significant for their resourcesor locations, deserve the same deliberatetreatment and support. Thus, trainedprofessionals who understand theintricacies and scope of these projects arenow in demand. To address this growingneed, UC Berkeley Extension offers the newProfessional Sequence in CulturalLandscape Preservation and Management.

According to the National Park Service,a cultural landscape is “a geographic area, including both cultural and naturalresources and the wildlife or domesticanimals therein, associated with an historicevent, activity, or person or exhibiting othercultural or aesthetic values.” Thoseinterested in preserving these sites includelandscape architects, architects, planners, government or agency personnel, community activists, and preservationenthusiasts—all potential students whocould benefit from the analytical skills andmanagement techniques provided in UC

Berkeley Extension’s Professional Sequencein Cultural Landscape Preservation andManagement, the only program of its kindin the Bay Area or elsewhere.

“Although a number of programsaddress architectural preservation, no otherprogram focuses solely on historiclandscape preservation or culturallandscape management,” says UC BerkeleyExtension Landscape Architecture ProgramDirector JC Miller. “Occasional seminarsand workshop-style presentations onhistoric landscape preservation areavailable, from groups such as the GardenConservancy and the CaliforniaPreservation Foundation, but these areneither offered on a regular basis norsystematic in their approach to the material. Our curriculum seeks to formalize thisdeveloping knowledge base anddisseminate it to a wider audience ofpreservation practitioners, both new andseasoned.”

Through a combination of lecture- andstudio-based courses, students receive acomprehensive education in the variousregulatory agencies, practice standards, andprofessional vocabulary involved in thisemerging field. The inaugural surveycourse—Tools of Preservation: ManagingChange in Cultural Landscapes—offers anintroduction to the fundamental tools of thepreservation process and how to applythem, with guest lectures from subject-matter experts on specific aspects of the

process. A second survey course exploressustainable practices and methodologies. The curriculum also includes two historycourses that examine the interrelationshipamong landscape architecture, architecture, and urban design. A final design studioclass focuses on learning decision-makingprocesses and developing treatmentstrategies such as preservation, rehab-ilitation, restoration, and reconstruction.

Students can complete the entire five-course sequence, which offers nine semesterunits of academic credit (144 hours ofinstruction), in a minimum of one calendaryear; all students must complete thecurriculum within three years of registeringfor the program. To receive an Award ofCompletion upon finalizing thecoursework, students must maintain anoverall minimum 2.5 grade point average(GPA), with a grade of C or better in eachcourse. There are no formal prerequisites forthe program, though students must firstcomplete the introductory survey andhistory courses before enrolling in thefollow-up sections to those courses. All fourpreliminary courses are prerequisites for thefinal design studio course. The five coursesincluded in this sequence are also eitherrequirements or electives in UC BerkeleyExtension’s Certificate Program inLandscape Architecture, enabling studentsto progress concurrently through bothprograms.

Interested potential students can learnmore about the Professional Sequence inCultural Landscape Preservation andManagement at information sessions onJanuary 11 and May 18, 6:30–8 p.m., at UCBerkeley Extension’s Art and Design Centerin San Francisco. Information sessions arefree; open to the public; and offeropportunities to meet other prospectivestudents, talk to instructors and staff, andask questions. Thank you!To the members of the

CLCA East Bay Board fortheir dedication andservice to our chapter.

Meet the East Bay Board...Welcome to the dedicated members who have stepped up to serve on the CLCA East Bay Board of Directors in 2011!

Those unlicensed contractors! Thoselow-ballers! Those contractors who doa lousy job and make landscaperslook bad! Employees who leave, stealyour equipment, or sue you!Customers who expect more for less,or damage your reputation! Price-

only shoppers who believe someone should give them1500 square feet of patio for $5,000! Who do they thinkthey are?!

“They” will always be there, but many of us mustlearn to avoid those folks, others to avoid being them. Noregulation or divine intervention will put all those badguys out of business. No rebound of the economy willtake bad and un-believing customers out of the gene pool.Wouldn’t it be nice if there were “insurance” for thesetypes of things? There is!

Only Lloyd’s of London will never sell it. You will. If you’ve learned to sell yourself well, set up a speedy, quality landscape delivery system, and found people tohire who can work the details better than you yourself, you’ve already paid your Bad Guys/Bad Employees/

Bad Customers insurance premium. If not, perhaps you picked uppointers at one of our chapter’s recent Business DevelopmentLuncheons: in December on Marketing, in January on Accountingand in February on Hiring.

Life brought me a Marketing lesson this week. Temporarilyfilling a fellow contractor’s shoes, my business partner AlanParkman turned a husband and wife pair first into consultationclients, then into design clients. Very likely the couple will becomeconstruction clients after that. What made the $150 consultationsale and subsequent design sale so easy? The contractor’s web site.Rich with inviting photos, free advice, a candid photo, and theunique personality of that contractor beaming off the pages, the

web site told the potential clients all they needed to know. It madethem feel that this contractor could answer their questions anddeliver the landscape of their dreams. They said they liked herportfolio, and everything Alan said mirrored what they read in herweb site. I imagine once they saw the contractor’s website, theyforgot about everyone else. Looked forward to her call. Were nothesitant to pay $150 for two hours of her advice. So enchanted werethey, it didn’t matter that someone else made the call, and yetanother showed up at their house the following day.

Are you ready to make money giving ball park estimates? Areyou ready for clients of higher quality, practically waving theircheck when you arrive? Is your web site ready? What else haveyou got that will make your clients fall in love with you in this ageof internet contractor speed-dating?

Keep coming to CLCA events and learn what makes you You;what takes bad guys, bad employees and bad customers out ofyour business picture; meet a contractor who needs help with theirbusiness, or come for some gosh darn friends and fun. You paidyour membership: You deserve it! We will be your friends, radicalize your radiance, send you back shiny and new to existingclients and new ones.

Let's see you soon!DeeAnn Schuttish

There are many benefits associated withparticipating in your chapter awardsprogram. Winning an award tells potentialclients they are dealing with one of the bestcompanies in the area and recognizes thesuperior efforts of your crews. Many clientsrefer to the fact that their property receivedan award when selling their property.

Participation in your local awards is away to receive feedback on your work fromother landscape professionals -- somethingmost of us rarely get. The judge’s sheetswill be available for your review so you canlearn what areas may need improvement.

There are several award categories forinstallation and maintenance projects of allsizes including commercial, public works, and residential categories. There is even aspecial effects and, new this year, sustainable landscape category for theincreasing number of projects that are“going green” or Bay Friendly Qualified.

Your odds are probably the highest byentering properties that have been detailedprior to judging and/or projects in some ofthe specialty categories such as Renovation,Special Effects and the Excelsior Award (forthose who have been members less than 2

years). The specific challenges of each jobare looked at as well as the quality. Designis judged in the design- build category.

Start today by chosing your best, mostcompetitive jobs from the last 2 years. Entryforms will mail the first week in March, ordownload additional forms from ourwebsite at www.clca-sfbae.org, get theowners signed permission to judge the site, and send it all in with your check of $85 percategory plus $150 for 2 banquet tickets. Then get those accounts looking great andjoin us for a wonderful dinner party onJune 4, 2011.

We are expecting 40-60 people at theBanquet this year. Be sure to invite yourfamily, employees, designers and evenclients. We plan to have either one of thejudges or a celebrity landscape contractor asthe MC of the event.
