Wednesday, March 27THE SOUND OF MUSICWe bid auf Wiedersehen to Salzburg and ride our private motorcoach to the great music capital of Vienna. On the way our journey carries us through the lovely, peaceful region of lakes and mountains called the Salzkammergut. A pleasant ferry ride from the charming village of St. Gilgen, birthplace of Mozart’s mother, crosses the Wolfgangsee to St. Wolfgang. In the town’s main church of the same name, we’ll view the unique late-Gothic winged altar by Michael Pacher, before lunch at the Brandauer Villa in the town of Strobl right on the lake. Upon arrival in Vienna, we check in to our base for the next five nights, the five-star Hotel Bristol, ideally located across from the Vienna State Opera. Tonight the Concentus Musicus Wien, the great early-music orchestra founded by Nikolaus Harnoncourt, performs music by Vivaldi and Pisendel in the lovely Brahms-Saal of the Musikverein.

Thursday, March 28HISTORIC VIENNAOur privately guided walking tour of Vienna’s Old Town includes many treats: majestic St. Stephen’s Cathedral where Mozart’s funeral took place and Bruckner played the organ; a small theatre where Mozart produced operas and entertainments; the Eroicasaal, where Beethoven premiered the “Eroica” Symphony in Vienna; and more. Lunch is in the center. After lunch our private coach takes us out to the Central Cemetery to stand before the tombs of Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms and other composers, before landing at the 18th-century palace and gardens of Schönbrunn, the Hapsburg summer residence. This evening, the Vienna Symphony under the baton of Juraj Valčuha performs music by Prokofiev and Rachmaninoff at the beautiful Wiener Konzerthaus.

Friday, March 29JUGENDSTIL VIENNA Fin de siècle Vienna was under the grip of a widely diverse and experimental explosion in the arts, nowhere more evident today in its Jugendstil landmarks of Vienna’s Art Nouveau movement. A trip around Vienna’s Ringstrasse to view buildings designed by Adolf Loos, Otto Wagner, and other renowned architects; the Secession, to see Gustav Klimt’s stunning Beethoven Frieze, and the Leopold Museum, one man’s fine collection of painting, sculpture and decorative arts of the period, all will be led by an expert art historian. Lunch is appropriately at Zum Schwarzen Kameel (The Black Camel) located in a classic Art Nouveau building. Rest of the afternoon free. At the famed Vienna State Opera tonight Verdi’s stirring drama of conflicted family rivalries in Venice, Simon Boccanegra, is led by the great Placido Domingo in the title role, Philippe Auguin conducting.

Saturday, March 23 Flights from the US, with arrival the following day.

Sunday, March 24 WILKOMMEN!Arrival in Munich or Salzburg and transfer to the pretty town of Salzburg, birthplace of Mozart and still much the same as in his time. We settle in to our 5-star hotel along the Salzach River in the quiet old town, the Hotel Altstadt, and gather for a welcome reception. Then we cross the river for our Gala Welcome Dinner in the exclusive Wintergarten at the Hotel Sacher.

Monday, March 25MOZART’S CITYBreakfast daily at both hotels. Our expert guide, Barbara, takes us on a morning walking tour of Salzburg, across the Old Town, to the Cathedral, the Archbishop’s Palace and St. Peter’s church. We tour the house where Mozart was born, and end up for lunch at the historic St. Peter’s Stiftskeller, where many notables for the music world have dined. The rest of your afternoon is free. Tonight enjoy our own private concert of music by Mozart in the Viennese Hall of the renowned Mozarteum, the historic university in Salzburg and a center of musical life in the city.

Tuesday, March 26MOZART AND FAMILY Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and family moved to larger quarters across the river in 1773, where the composer lived before leaving for good to Vienna eight years later. The house was destroyed during the war but has been carefully reconstructed and opened again twenty years ago. As part of our tour we will view private manuscripts of the family rarely accorded to tourists. Lunch on your own and afternoon free. Dinner tonight is at M32, a fine modern restaurant atop the Mönchberg with panoramic views over the city.

Sunday, March 31OLD MASTERS AND BRUCKNEROn our last full day in Vienna, we offer an early-entry private tour, exclusive to the group, of the Kunsthistorisches (Fine Arts) Museum with its famous paintings by Breughel, Caravaggio, Arcimboldo, and many others.
