Saint Ann’s Parish 5th Sunday of Lent March 22, 2015
Last week I discussed why we receive Holy Communion and what the requirements are for us to be able to
receive Holy Communion. This week, I wish to discuss the how we approach to receive Holy Communion, how we
are to receive, and what we should do afterwards.
When we approach for Holy Communion, we are to make a “bow of the head” before receiving
Communion. This is more than a mere nod, but doesn’t have to be a full bow from the waist. When the priest or
extraordinary minister holds up the Host and says “The Body of Christ” we must respond by saying “Amen.” This is
the only approved response. We may not say “Thank you” or anything else. Our “Amen” means, “Yes, I believe this
truly is the Body of Christ and not just a piece of bread.” If you choose to receive Communion in your hand, place
your hands at the level of your heart, right hand under left (reverse it if you are left handed), making a throne for the
Eucharist. Do not place your hands side-by-side or attempt to pluck the Host out of the priest’s hand. When the Host
has been placed in your hand, take your right hand and pick up the host and place it in your mouth. Do NOT lick the
Sacred Host out of your hands or suck it up like a vacuum! Feed yourself in the normal way we would eat any
other food. Jesus gave us the Eucharist in the form of food, so it is not disrespectful to treat it that way. You must
also place the Host in your mouth in full view of the priest, and not walk away with it still in your hand. It is never
permissible to bring the Host back to the pew with you. If you choose to receive Holy Communion on your tongue,
open your mouth and extend your tongue sufficiently so the priest may place the host on your tongue. The Host falls
to the floor just as frequently from people who don’t open their mouth sufficiently and end up knocking the Host to
the floor when they close their mouth as from people receiving in the hand. Once you have received Holy
Communion, go back to your pew and pray about the fact that you have just received God - Body, Soul, and Divinity
- into your body and what that now means for you: you are now on the cross with Him, dying with Him, buried with
Him, and risen in Him with all your sins forgiven! Then join in the Communion hymn thanking the Lord for His
tremendous gift of love to us. I notice many people who receive Communion and then head for the door, or pick up
the bulletin and start reading it while standing in the back. (If you’re doing this now, gotcha!) If you give
sufficient attention to the fact that you have just taken God Himself, Body, Soul, and Divinity, as your food, I
Please remember in your prayers the following who are ill: Mateo Arlia, Maria Cadacia, Grace Capasso, Josephine
Cistica, Gregory Crotty, Josie Esposito, Geneen Grassia,
Susan Hessney, D. Hoer, David Lowry, Adam Martin, Susan
Nagle, Marisa Palermo, Robert Peterson and Sgt. Edward
Ryan. And those who recently died, may they rest in peace.
A Note from Father Mastrolia at St. Anthony’s
Dear Friends: I would like to personally invite you, your relatives, and friends to join me on a special trip in the
Fall of 2015 (September 8-18) to cities and special places dear to the heart of St. John Paul II. I am planning a
pilgrimage to begin in Poland to visit significant sites such as the birthplace of Karol Jozef Wojtyla, his churches in
Krakow, and the Shrine of the Black Madonna at Czestochowa, which attracts pilgrims throughout the year and was
frequently visited by the Saint. We will then travel to Rome to visit the sacred sites of our Catholic faith, including
the Sistine Chapel, the Basilicas of Christian Rome and the Catacombs. We will, of course, take in the historic
venues of ancient Rome like the Roman Forum and the Coliseum. We will celebrate the Liturgies, as well as have
the opportunity to attend a general audience with Pope Francis on the week before he leaves for his visit to New
York! We will visit and pray at the same locations where Saint John Paul II, St. Francis and St. Clare came closer to
God. Visits to the medieval cities of Assisi and Florence promise to be a most enriching experience! As we prepare
for our departure on the Birthday of the Blessed Virgin Mary, I hope you will imitate his deep Marian devotion and
say “yes” to this invitation!
Sincerely in Christ, Fr. Arthur Mastrolia, Pastor, Church of St. Anthony in Yonkers, NY
