President’s Message
Greetings fellow RSC Members,
Our upcoming meeting, on March 4th at
the Jefferson Lakeside Country Club,
will be our last official meeting of this
membership year. We will hold a brief
business meeting in order to conduct
the election of next year’s board. Our
annual Membership 18th at the
American Legion Post 354. We are
grateful to be able to enjoy this
fabulous location along the river once
again. I hope to see you there!
As we have previously communicated to all members, we have had a total of four jackets turn
up missing from the coat rack at the December and February membership meetings. On behalf
of the RSC Board of Directors, I wish to express our sincere regret that these issues have
occurred and assure you that we are working with the staff at JLCC to come to a resolution.
Once again, if you have any knowledge of the whereabouts of these jackets or witnessed
anything that you think may be of assistance, please inform our Meetings Director, Mike
Larson. With any luck, the weather will cooperate to allow folks to leave their jackets at home
or in their cars for the upcoming meeting. Otherwise, you may wish to hang your jacket on the
back of a chair in the meeting room this month. We will try to have a coat rack available in the
meeting room for our use, if possible. I want to take this opportunity to remind everyone that
on the rare occasions where issues do arise at an RSC sponsored event, it is the preference of
the RSC Board of Directors that you work through the RSC representative in charge of the event
(Meetings Director, Trip Leader or Social/Activity host) to resolve those issues.
This month, Sandy Vermillera and Judy Marston have planned a fabulous activity with free
swing dance lessons at the VMFA Dance After Work event on March 20th. Next month, join Judy
on Saturday, April 11th for a bike ride along the Capital Trail, followed by lunch at Upper Shirley
Vineyards. As always, watch for e-blasts and check the website for new upcoming events.

Super Bowl Weekend at Snowshoe
Super Bowl at Snowshoe in 2020 was one to remember! The weekend started with a mountain wide power outage on Friday that shut down all skiing for about 1:30 - 3:30. Luckily, power came back on in time for everyone to check in and enjoy the taco bar served in the hospitality room that evening. Saturday saw great conditions with snow showers throughout the day, great condi-tions in the basin as well as Silver Creek. Hot tub activities apres ski were followed by Karen Noakes’ great pasta baked dishes for dinner. Saturday night and Sunday morning saw fresh snow for the slopes so Sunday morning’s conditions were great! Unfortunately, Appalachian Power had a planned outage on Sunday afternoon to repair a line that went down on Friday, so power was out at the resort from 4-6 pm and then back on for the game. Sunday evening witnessed a great Super Bowl game viewed in 3 adjacent units with a spread of chili, sausage with peppers and onions, dips, bakes potatoes as well as the usual beverage selection. A great Super Bowl Party! The weekend ended with warm air invading on Sunday evening which limited the skiing activities on Monday. Overall, a great weekend enjoyed by all!!

COMPETITION 2020
Rules and Racing Schedule for the 2019-2020 Season for the Richmond Ski Club
With winter in full swing here in the Mid-Atlantic, skiing is moving to the forefront of the mind of every RSC member. One of the best ways to improve on those downhill skills is to be-come involved in one of the club’s racing programs. For those that wish to engage in “hitting the gates” throughout the entire season, we have the President Cup Challenge, which includes 22 races in Virginia and neighboring states. To qualify, just pay the $35 fee to the Competition Committee and race in a minimum of five contests in which the skiers have at least one suc-cessful finish on one of their two runs on the same day. The other program is designed for those people that can not devote many weekends to racing and just wish to compete one time. This is the event known as the Club Races, which encom-passes two individual races on the same day: one being a giant slalom run on Wintergreen’s standard NASTAR course and the other being a more-technical slalom course with tighter turns. The cost for each of these races is just $25, which includes the fee to the racing depart-ment at Wintergreen. Registration for races differs among the various venues and every resort has its own schedul-ing. All race registrations at Wintergreen must take place at the top of the course on Eagles Swoop between 11am and noon. At Bryce, however, the Ski School office, which opens at 8:00am, is the venue for race registration. For those members of the R. S. C. that have never been paying participants in any of the club’s competition programs, there will be an opportunity to get a full four hours of unlimited racing at Wintergreen FREE on either the 8th or 9th of February, courtesy of the Competition Commit-tee and the club’s board. A third program is the competition for the coveted James Jalbert Awards, which are allocated to the top three finishers in the NASTAR medal count. This year, however, we are adding a new twist. With Vail Resorts’s creation of its own recreational racing program called Epic Mix, the Competition Committee has made medals from that format count towards the Jalbert Award as well. Anyone interested in racing should contact me at [email protected] or 804-356-8868. Racing fees (in the form of a check or money order made out in the appropriate amount to “RSC – Competition”) can be sent to me at Post Office Box 654, Nellysford VA 22958-0654. (NOTE: There is no fee associated with the Jalbert Awards). Hoping to see many of you on a race course this season! Jim Cochrane Jr., Director of Competition
