Resident of the Month: John F. John Fay was born in June of 1940 in Queens, NY. His

father, John Fay, was born in County Clare, Ireland, and his

mother Anna May Fay, the daughter of Irish immigrants,

was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut. His father, a World

War I veteran, worked as a NYC bus driver and his mother

worked for the Post Office. John was the only brother to 6

sisters—Kathleen, Peggy, Honore, Celia, Julia, and

Genevieve. They were members of Our Lady of Fatima

Parish, and John graduated from St. Joan of Arc grade

school and St. Francis Prep High School. In first grade, he

met his lifelong friends—Fran and Richie. They would

make the most of their 60-cent bleacher tickets to watch

double-header Yankee Games where John, always the

dissenter, stubbornly rooted for the underdog St. Louis

Browns against the unstoppable home team. For his

birthday in 1951, John got a Raleigh bicycle— which he

kept in working order over the next 7 decades. The Raleigh

gave 11-year-old John and Richie ideas for new adventures,

and they mapped out a 160-mile round trip ride to the

Delaware River basin and back to Queens. Their parents

waved off their fantastic claims that they were biking so far,

and they nearly made the full round trip but a nagging flat

tire finally got the better of them, and they had to call

Richie’s dad to come pick them up at a New Jersey service

station “only miles from the bridge” at 2 in the morning.

The adventure may have been foiled, but the story

continued to delight for many years.

From an early age, John’s favorites were well-

established—bike rides, newspapers, arguments over

politics, and laughs over arguments. But on June 16, 1961 at

an Irish-American dance, John found his most favorite of

all—Anne Quinn, who had moved to NY from County

Kildare, Ireland in 1959. Their first date was to the famous

Radio City Music Hall; their second, the snazzy

Copacabana night club, but they soon fell into their regular

routine of constant company that would last for the next 60

years. On a day trip to Washington DC where they were

supposed to be picketing the White House for a forgotten

political cause, they dashed from monument to monument

from site to site, narrowly getting back in time for the bus

back to NY. In October 1963 at Anne’s home parish in

Kilcock, Ireland, they were married.

John and Anne have five children. First in the 1960s,

John, Patrick, Edmund, and Brian—what John smilingly

referred to as the “core family”—were born in Queens. John

brought lots of fun to the busy days of working at the bank

and raising the four boys. John created characters for

bedtime stories like Olga Applesauce; he ran suspiciously

adjudicated trivia quiz times at the dinner table, and he

claimed to have a tie that gave him Dr. Dolittle-like powers

of bird communication. He composed odes to cherished cars

and sang them with great gusto and no pitch.

In 1974, the family moved to Clifton Park when John’s

job transferred them upstate. They joined St. Edward’s

Parish and later St. Mary’s in Waterford. In 1982, their

daughter Mary was born. A lover of dolls and dresses,

Mary brought many new interests to the Fay household,

but she shared in many of her father’s interests as well.

John was thrilled with this new buddy. On day trips to

Lake George, they would tell time by the hourly cannon

blasts from Fort William Henry and listen to AM radio all

the way home. In the 1980s, someone gifted Anne and John a tandem

bicycle, and a new old hobby was born. For the next 30 years, every summer evening they biked around Clifton

Park, a route that took them about 8 miles. John and Anne have 15 grandchildren—Fiona, Dearbhla, Eoghan, Amelia,

Charlotte, Victoria, Thomas, Peter, Eddie, Clare, Billy, Paul, Cecilia, Bernadette, and Helen—and four wonderful

daughters-in-law, Caroline, Cherry, Susan, and Patti, and one wonderful son-in-law, Chris. John dove into the fun

and games of grand parenting as he had parenting—making fun wherever he could find it. Nothing made him

happier then when one of them landed a comeback that caught him off guard and caused him to throw his head

back and laugh. When he retired in 2004, John and Anne took their show on the road—traveling to First

Communions, holidays, and graduations in Ireland,

Alabama, Chicago, and New York. On a 10,000-mile road trip across the country, they drove the Pacific Coast of the

US and into Canada. They traveled to places like London, France, Spain, Italy, and Germany. On these trips, they

would do as they did in Washington, DC all those years ago: dashing from site to site to site, full of curiosity for

the wonders of the world, but always happy to return home together in time for a cup of tea and Jeopardy. John

and Anne celebrated 50 years of adventures in 2013 at a party with all their children and grandchildren, siblings

and friends; they are still each other’s favorite company. John has been a resident of Peregrine since November

2018.

Expansion and Renovation Update: Seaside shower and tub rooms are complete, beautiful, and

efforts are in place to do the same on Bayside. We have

created a comforting and inviting area for bathing and

some finishing touches are on their way. Our previous train

room on Seaside should be nearing a reopening soon with a

fresh useful conversational and engagement area to benefit

our community needs and grant requests by families. We

will soon begin efforts for positive change in the Seaside

dining and living rooms. On the outside we are very proud

of the growth and leadership of our expansion project, with

special thanks to Rich Belotti our Maintenance Director for

his ongoing support and expertise, BBL, our Contractor

team, Peachtree, PC and D, and of course, our owners,

Valstone and their compassionate collaborative efforts with

Peregrine together we will enhance the days of our current

residents and those to come by embracing Peregrine’s

professional warmth and specialty services. Our foundation

is poured, frame is set and the walls are being closed in.

We are pleased with the project’s progression and, as

always, if you have any questions or concerns please feel

free to reach out to Heidi Hayes or Rich Belotti.

Employee Update:

Lauren Carpenter, our Community Relations Director,

will be leaving us in her part time status but remain per

diem with us. She has blessed and comforted us with

her never ending enthusiasm, energy, and compassion.

Lauren’s professionalism and detail focused

mannerisms are unlike no other. Her kind smile and

ability to manage all things that travel her way with

ease, while successfully leading multiple missions and

always maintaining her cheerful and sincere heartfelt

engagements, will be sadly missed by all.

Stephanie Walsh will be returning to our community in

a part time capacity as our new Community Relations

Director to job share with Patti Karwatowski. Stephanie

has been supporting Beacon Pointe and now Peregrine

Senior Living at Clifton Park for many years now in a

variety of roles. She has served as our Activity

Director, Marketing Director, and Specialty Consultant

with her company care tactics, and even brought her

dance class here to lead them into an intergenerational

spiritual wonderment for both her students and our

residents. She shines with professional integrity,

empathy and knowledge and has always created a sense

of comforting team leadership and led the way to foster

growth and development for those we serve in their

home here at Peregrine. We are overjoyed to welcome

Stephanie back!!

March Birthdays

In astrology, those born March 1–20 are the slippery Fish of Pisces. Selfless Pisces are very wise and empathetic, making them always willing to help others. These deep emotions also make Pisces talented artists and good friends. Those born March 21–31 are Rams of Aries. Like rams, Aries charge forward with courage, confidence, and enthusiasm. They embrace action, take risks, and will fight for their goals.
