March 2020 LETTER FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER

Dear Members,“Volunteering is the ultimate exercise in democracy. You vote in elections once a year, but when you volunteer you vote every day about the community you want to live in” –The people of our community are our best asset. And we are pleased to recognize and say thank you to our many volunteers as we host our Volunteer Thank You event this March. This event was an LMCC tradition and we are pleased to bring it back. There are so many people that contribute to the operation of our Club and we appreciate all their amazing efforts. We are lucky! And speaking of luck, we will be celebrating St. Patrick’s Day in the Member’s Room on Friday, March 13. Fun, music and traditional Irish fare for our Members and guests. Other events to look forward to this spring include Wild Game Night, a performance by a Touch of Grey, and of course all our special times in the Member’s Room. Check out the Club calendar on our website. But it is not all fun and games here at LMCC, we are working on some very important projects to service our Membership and our community. We are working on a critical initiative to enhance our communication system. This includes a new website, POS and accounting systems. This will massively enhance our ability to deliver information to our Members, as well as allow them to communicate back to us. Look for more later this spring on Club Essentials and JONAS.Included in this issue of the PAPOOSE, you will see an update from our Club Engineer as well.As the weather becomes more promising, I would encourage everyone to take an active role in the aesthetics of our community. The winter was mild, but many properties have taken a beating. Leaves need to be picked up, garbage removed and just an overall refresh of everyone’s home. At a minimum, garbage should be placed in cans and large items should not be left at the curb for an extended period of time. Please be mindful of how your home’s appearance impacts our community overall. As many people are enjoying more time outside, I would also urge everyone to SLOW DOWN on the roads. There are more people and more traffic- please drive safely and carefully. We are also looking to secure out parking lot this spring. Non LMCC members will be charged a fee for parking which will contribute to the maintenance and upkeep of the lot.And lastly, there are a limited number of Pool Memberships available. Please contact [email protected] for more information.See you at the Club!

Sincerely,

John J. Stanley, CCMGENERAL [email protected]

REPORT FROM THE CLUB ENGINEER

The annual Lake Mohawk Road rehab program for the next several years is based on following the progress of the gas company. Generally, the timing for this rehab will be one to three years after the gas main

has been installed. This allows for interested Members to have the service connections completed prior to repaving. To further ensure the integrity of the roads be maintained as long as possible once repaved, there is a five (5) year moratorium on any non-emergency road opening after paving. Only a failed water or storm sewer related repair constitutes an emergency. Requesting a gas service installation is not considered an emergency as there are alternatives to gas systems for heating purposes. If you are considering conversion to a gas system for your home, please do so prior to your road being repaved. The preliminary list of roads to be rehabilitated this year is: Alpine Trail – Summit Trail to southern end; Valley View Trail, remaining sections; Golfview Terrace; Summit Road; Shawnee Trail; Sagamore Trail; Seneca Trail; Seneca Terrace. Please note this list may be revised based on final roads assessment in late spring, the budget of the annual road rehab project and any ancillary conditions needing corrective action prior to repaving.Another issue I feel compelled to notify the Members of Lake Mohawk of for the purpose of future planning is the spread of the Emerald Ash Boring Beetle in Sparta. When traveling through wooded areas, particularly during this time of year when pale greys are the normal hues expected, more and more yellow to burnt orange bark strips can be easily spotted. This is one of the signs of infestation by the boring insect. Usually once the bark has displayed this splotchy yellow bark, the tree is too far gone, and removal is recommended. The most susceptible species is the ash tree which can be up to 25% of the northern New Jersey woodlands. Please go to the following website for get more information on identifying, planning, prevention and managing this threat to our trees:www.nj.gov/dep/parksandforests/forest/community/Emerald_Ash_Borer. •

LAKE MOHAWK ADVENTURERS CLUB

Lake Mohawk Adventurers Club has been hitting the trail quite a lot recently. In case you haven’t

heard of us it was an idea I dreamed up at last year’s Winterfest. I spoke with John Stanley our GM about my passion and love for the environment and for being outdoors. I wanted to find a way to share my love of nature with others. Here at Lake Mohawk we are surrounded by so many great hiking areas. I feel many people have no idea where to hike and that’s why they are not on these gorgeous trails. I love being outside no matter what season, and my passion/obsession has always been hiking.Fast forward a few months, and Jim Kelly reached out to me also interested in group hiking. That’s when the club really took off because I had Jim and Julia Kelly as knowledgeable and experienced leaders as well as myself and my husband Tor Magnar. A team of 4 really helps get the hikes on the map and makes the events happen.I can’t thank Jim and Julia enough for their energy and enthusiasm week after week.My vision for this club is a two-fold purpose—exploring the beauty of nature and helping preserve nature by cleaning up the parks we enjoy. We will be planning future clean up hikes once spring is here,

as that is when you really see an uptick in polluting. More trail users, more waste unfortunately. As the Lake Mohawk Adventurers Club grows, we will also be exploring rock climbing, both indoor for practice and ultimately outdoor if we have enough interest. We would work through a professional licensed vendor for outdoor climbing as safety is paramount. There is also talk about organizing bike rides on the rail trails in nicer weather. We have mile after mile of great trails literally in our backyard. Have you ever been on any of them? We’d love to have someone come onboard and run hikes suitable for children. We’d love to see someone lead hikes that are more like a gentle saunter/walk in the woods for folks that aren’t interested in a high impact experience. We want to appeal to as many people as possible. We’d love to hear your ideas and suggestions as the club grows. You’ll find our upcoming hikes on lakemohawk.info as well as the Lake Mohawk Country Club Facebook page. We are out every weekend either Saturday or Sunday. (Torrential rain cancels.) We’ll see you on the trail! •

"The Lake Mohawk Ski Hawks is a team for all. Our members start at age 6 and ski through their 60s! We have entire families join too.""You don’t need water ski experience. You don’t even have to want to ski. There are drivers, pin pullers, costume directors, dance choreographer s , DJs, social media managers, script

writers, set artists, T-shirt designers, a dock diva, safety crew...get the idea? All that’s needed is a positive attitude. Team spirit goes a long way, too.""By being a member you learn how to excel at things that most people don’t get to even try, ever.""Some of us are daring and some may be afraid at times, but we don’t get mad. We rely on each other, we encourage one another to get up and try again. We don’t quit.""Since 1987 the team competes every summer in the Northeastern Regional Competition, and has qualified for Nationals! We have Championship bare footers too.""Our costumes are so creative for our choreographed shows...it’s like Broadway on water. As a matter of fact, we have even performed in NYC’s Central Park."

"We listen and dance to our favorite music .... all summer long.""Where else can you build a 4-story pyramid...on water...speeding by at 25 miles an hour? Plus get a tan.""No one gets paid. We are volunteers. And we’re ok with that.""We laugh. A lot.""We are Lake Mohawk Ski Hawks, the Water Ski Show Team of New Jersey, and we are Proud."The Spring pre-Season meeting is in April. Check it out. You just might wanna consider joining this year 2020!

50TH ANNIVERSARY OF EARTH DAY- APRIL 25

Join us as Lake Mohawk Celebrates Earth Day once again. Help beautify your neighborhood and prevent waste from entering our lakes during spring and summer rains. Last year we had over 100 volunteers participate in cleaning up our community: our beaches, roads, and the banks of the Wallkill River. Many bags of trash and recyclables were collected in just a few hours. Join us this year as we mark the 50th anniversary of Earth Day.Earth Day will be celebrated Saturday, April 25 with the cleanup beginning at 9am. Participants in our annual cleanup will be able to pick up supplies Friday after 5pm or Saturday morning beginning at 8am at the Clubhouse. Contests are being planned, as well as giveaways and prizes. We encourage you to get a group together-your beach, intraclub, troop or social club- and join us. Details and contact information can be found on our website lakemohawkpf.org You may contact us at [email protected] . A 50 year Celebration is being planned for Saturday evening in the Member Room at 5pm.If you wish to sponsor this cleanup, donations are being accepted. You will be recognized on Facebook and on our website. Donations will pay for cleanup supplies and the Celebration on Saturday Evening.

SUPPORT PROVIDED FOR LMCC GRANT REQUEST

The Lake Mohawk Preservation Foundation voted to lend support for LMCC in submitting a grant to prevent harmful algae blooms (HABs) on our community lakes. An application was submitted to the State of NJ by our Club engineer, Sabine Watson, to request money for treating problem areas of our lakes. The Club wishes to get away from

using copper sulfate which can cause an explosion of these harmful algae blooms. Lake Mohawk wishes to try new techniques, a phosphate binder and an oxidizer in specific locations under the auspices of Princeton Hydro, our lake consultant.

NEW OFFICERS ELECTED

Join us in welcoming our recently elected Foundation Trustees. Julia Kelly lives in Lake Mohawk and teaches at Ridge & Valley School in Fredon. She is a Master Gardener and is excited to participate in educational activities with the Foundation. Tom Nerviano has been joining our monthly meetings for a while now. He lives in Lake Mohawk and wishes to preserve and protect our community for the future. We are excited to have volunteers who have varied experiences, networks, and a love for the area. At our annual meeting in January all of our officers were re-elected to serve. Bill Askin, as Foundation President; Craig Kalucki, President; Laura Parker, Secretary; and Bill Askin, Sr (Pop), treasurer.Marie Cramer, Tom Murray, Craig Kalucki and Laura Parker were each re-elected to serve as trustees for an additional 3-year terms at our January meeting. Brenda Klumpp, Jim Wardell, Rebecca Gillespie and Lauren Karnacewicz continue to serve the Foundation. We thank Holly Fiorella and Pam Vreeland for their past service as they step down from the board. Pam was involved in planning our Recognition Celebration these past 2 years. Holly has been involved with educational activities as well as the grant committee. All trustees are on many committees and are participate in fundraising, educational, and reviewing grant applications. The Lake Mohawk Preservation Foundation is an all-volunteer nonprofit organization focused on improving and preserving lake water quality now and for future generations.

It is that time of year again when the Beach officers start gearing up for the spring and summer season!

We meet every March to go over everything that the Beach needs and to plan some important, and some fun, dates. The first date on the 2020 calendar is, of course, DOCK DAY! days until Beach opening. Summer is getting closer, that at least is one fact for sure. Mark your calendars please for Saturday, 4/18 - 9 am for Beach Five Spring Clean Up. We are looking forward to getting the season underway, to cleaning up the grounds, to installing our Yakport and swim platform, and to mailing out the yearly newsletter to our local Beach 5 neighboring community. All Canoe/Kayak/SUP rack renters will need to register their crafts at the club and renew EARLY to keep their spots. We have a waiting list of individuals looking to join Beach Five so please evaluate if you are planning to actively use your kayak this year, otherwise we need to make room for those on the list. LMCC tag registration is key. Rack fees and tag numbers will be due MAY 1st so prepare now. For anyone interested in volunteering with us this season to help with beach events and projects, please don’t hesitate to reach out to Marlene or Eileen. Thanks.

Our memory photo of the month is a tribute to the German Christmas Market and features Glen Post, Eileen Hickey, Colleen Wolfe, and Deb and Hans DeBoer enjoying our warm Gluhwein. A fabulous night not to be forgotten. Speaking of fun nights, Beach Five would like to thank the LMCC for the March Volunteer Reception gathering. What a great group of like-minded individuals who work tirelessly to make our lake, beaches, parks, and events so wonderful. Thank you everyone for all you do! The volunteer spirit and passion are really heartwarming. Kudos!

As we enjoy the rest of March and pay tribute to St. Patrick, this Irish Lass would be remiss if I did not leave you with a bit of laughter…..One night, Mrs. McMillen answers the door to see her husband’s best friend, Paddy, standing on the doorstep. “Hello Paddy, but where is my husband? He went with you to the beer factory.” Paddy shook his head. “Ah Mrs. McMillen, there was a terrible accident at the beer factory, your husband fell into a vat of Guinness stout and drowned.” Mrs. McMillen starts crying. “Oh, don’t tell me that, did he at least go quickly?” Paddy shakes his head. “Not really- he got out 3 times to pee!”Happy St. Paddy’s day, everyone ~ Slainte! ALPINE BEACHSubmitted by Heather Scott

Winter has short days and what feels like long months. In January, the Alpine Beach

Association hosted an Appreciation Reception for residents of the Alpine Section. Many neighbors came out of hibernation to join us. We had lots of laughs and enjoyed the company of new and old faces. We will be announcing our upcoming schedule of events shortly so get ready to mark your calendars! Can’t wait to see you at the Beach!

HAPPY VALLEY BEACHSubmitted by Eric Takach

Greetings HVBer’s!Well, as of this writing it seems to be shaping

up to be the winter that wasn’t. However, I did see some determined kids sledding on the golf course with about an inch of snow…. I guess you have to make the best of what you have. To top it off the groundhog didn’t see his shadow so it looks like spring is just around the corner. On the bright side we should all be happy about our heating bills this year.Maybe we’ll get a cold snap this month, it would be nice to get a little skating in. Keep an eye open for happenings at the beach in the next issue of the Papoose, as well as Facebook, and of course the bulletin board.Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

As always, thanks for your support.

MANITOU BEACHSubmitted by Sue Kvanali

Things are looking up for Manitou! On February 18th a third-party vendor came in with a large

crane to remove all the debris from the snow and ice storm of December 2nd. It’s great to actually see the beach again as it was covered in fallen trees! We will soon be repairing the damaged kayak rack as well since we can more clearly access the situation now. Thank you LMCC for helping out our beach and getting it cleared for us. We are very appreciative. In the other exciting news category, Manitou will be entering the Dragon Boat race fundraiser for the first time ever this year! Our motley crew may not get first place but we’ll have a great time learning, we’ll do it with style and have a first-rate post event party.

Before you take the leap, here are some things you should know:

Safety issues are a concern. In the past year, gas related tragedies have occurred in New England and here at home in Sussex County. These incidents resulted in multiple explosions, dozens of fires and one death.

Gas is being shipped overseas. Gas exports are expected to grow exponentially in the coming months and years. Less gas at home means constricting supply. Less supply means higher prices.

The cost to switch is expensive. Utilities in our area are estimating the cost to convert at $14,000 or more. And with no guarantee of future low prices, the return on investment is uncertain at best.

Thinking of switching to gas?

Paid for by the Fuel Merchants Association of New Jersey.

There are many reasons why many of your neighbors have chosen to continue to heat their homes with heating oil:

It’s the safe option. Heating oil is biodegradable, nontoxic, nonflammable and it can’t explode. It’s the safest fuel around.

Homeowners have maximum choice. There are many local heating oil companies that provide quick and convenient service. And you can choose which one suits you best. That’s not the case when you are dealing with a utility.

The future is bright. With the advent of Ultra-low-sulfur heating oil combined with Bioheat®, today’s heating oil is clean, green and environmentally friendly.

No matter what you decide, it pays to get the facts. For more information, visit ThinkTwiceNJ.com.
