Singer Sarah Maclaine delighted the audience with her strong, rich, velvety voice, and fantastic vocal range. She was accompanied by Graeme Steel on trumpet, Allan Smith drums, David Taylor double bass and Todd Sidney on piano. They played many well-known songs, the first set included: Almost like being in love, The best is yet to come (with a great piano solo from Todd), ‘s wonderful, It don’t mean a thing, Foggy day in London town and finished with the band in green hats playing Irish eyes are smiling in honour of Saint Patrick’s Day . After a break the music continued with: Got you under my skin, Moon river (Great trumpet playing by Graeme Steel), World on a string, Autumn leaves, On a clear day, and then to finish another ‘green hat’ number for St Pat’s Day, a version of Danny boy with trumpet from Graeme Steel that would bring a tear to the eye of any Irish person. The last set of songs was: This can’t be love, When I fall in love, then ‘shake things up’ I got rhythm with a great drum solo by Allan Smith, It had to be you, My secret love, Dream a little dream of me, Fly me to the moon finishing with Route 66. Then we were treated to an encore, My baby just cares for me.It was indeed a wonderful afternoon of music. Noel Beaney

BALLARAT JAZZ CLUB—SPECIAL EVENTS IN THE COMMUNITY

On the 2nd of March six members of our Jazz Club attended the opening of The Civic Hall, ( in fine style of course, ) at The Begonia Ball. We were welcomed on arrival by the Beaufort Municipal Brass Band, the band having performed at the Civic Hall on numerous occasions in the Victorian Championships and Royal South Street ,prior to the closure of its doors 17 years ago. The night began with a Traditional Custodian Ceremony by the Wadwurrung Dance Group from the Ballarat , Geelong and Surrounding Areas. The Highlight of the evening was The Seb Big Band, the band a versatile modern 18 piece band com-prised of local professional and semi professional musicians who instantly had toes tapping , it did-n’t take long to fill the dance floor with many Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire’s strutting their stuff to the sounds of yesteryears. Many well knowns have performed at the Civic Hall in its Heyday, the likes of The Delltones,Chubby Checker, Eurogliders, John Farnham, Foster and Allen, Shirley Bassey, Split Enz, many Symphony or-chestras and Olivia Newton-John the list goes on and on! The night was wonderful ,the company great and it was a privilege to be there on such an historic occasion. Marion McHenry
