Whenthefastmakesitsappearance,likeakindofspiri-tualsummer,letusassoldiersburnishourweapons,andasharvesterssharpenoursickles,andassailorsorderourthoughtsagainstthewavesofextravagantdesires,andastravellerssetoutonthejourneytowardsheaven,andaswrestlersstripforthecontest.Forthebelieverisatonceaharvesterandasailorandasoldier,awrestlerandatraveler.Sharpenyourswordandyoursickle,whichhasbeenbluntedbygluttony—sharpenitbyfasting.Layholdofthepathway,whichleads,towardsheaven,ruggedandnarrowasitis.Layholdofit,andjourneyon.Ispeaknotofsuchafastasmostpersonskeep,butofrealfasting;notmerelyabstinencefrommeats,butfromsinsaswell.Forthenatureofafastissuchthatitdoesnotsuf-Dicetodeliverthosewhopracticeitunlessitisdoneac-cordingtoasuitablelaw.Sothatwhenwehavegonethroughthelaboroffastingwedonotlosethecrownoffasting,wemustunderstandhowandinwhatmanneritisnecessarytoconductthebusinesssincethePhariseealsofasted,butafterwardwentawayemptyanddestituteofthefruitoffasting.Thepublicandidnotfast,andyethewasacceptedinpreferencetohimwhohadfastedinor-derthatyoumaylearnthatfastingisunproDitableunlessallotherdutiesaccompanyit.
Fastingisamedicine.Butlikeallmedi-cines,thoughitbeveryproD-itabletothepersonwhoknowshowtouseit,itfre-quentlybe-comesuseless(andevenharmful)inthehandsofhimwhoisunskill-fulinitsuse.Ihavesaidthesethingsnotthatwe
maydisparagefasting,butthatwemayhonorfasting.Forthehonoroffastingconsistsnotinabstinencefromfood,butinwithdrawingfromsinfulpractices,sincehewholimitshisfastingonlytoabstinencefrommeatsisonewhoespeciallydisparagesfasting.Doyoufast?Givemeproofofitbyyourworks.Bywhatkindofworks?Ifyouseeapoorman,takepityonhim.Ifyouseeanenemy,bereconciledwithhim.Ifyouseeafriendgaininghonor,donotbejealousofhim.Ifyouseeabeautifulwoman,passherby.Andletnotonlythemouthfast,butalsotheeyeandtheearandthefeetandthehandsandallmembersofyourbodies.Letthehandsfastbybeingpurefromplunderingandavarice.Letthefeetfastbyceasingfromrunningtoun-lawfulspectacles.Lettheeyesfast,beingtaughtneverto

Dixthemselvesrudelyonhandsomefaces,ortobusythemselveswithstrangebeauties.Forlookingisthefoodoftheeyes,butifitweresuchasisunlawfulorforbidden,itmarsthefastandupsetsthewholesafetyofthesoul.Butifitwerelawfulandsafe,itadornsfasting.Foritwouldbeamongthingsmostabsurdtoabstainfromlaw-fulfoodbecauseofthefast,butwiththeeyestotouchevenwhatisforbidden!Doyounoteatmeat?Feednotuponlasciviousness(loveoflewdthings)bymeansofyoureyes.Lettheearfastalso.Thefastingoftheearcon-sistsinrefusingtoreceiveevilspeakingandcalumnies.Itiswritten,“Youshallnotreceiveafalsereport”(Exodus.23:1,LXX).Letthemouthalsofastfromdisgracefulspeechesandrail-ings.ForwhatdoesitproDitifweabstainfromDishandfowlandyetbiteanddevourthebrothersandsisters.TheevilspeakereatstheDleshofhisbrotherandbitesthebodyofhisneighbor.BecauseofthisPauluttersthefear-fulsaying,“Ifyoubiteanddevouroneanothertakeheedthatyouarenotconsumedbyoneanother”(Gal.5:15).YouhavenotDixedyourteethinhisDlesh,butyouhaveDixedyourslanderinhissoulandinDlictedthewoundofevilsuspicion,andyouhaveharmedinathousandwaysyourselfandhimandmanyothers,forinslanderingyourneighboryouhavemadehimwholistenstotheslander
worse,forshouldhebeawickedper-son,hebecomesmorecarelesswhenheDindsapartnerinhiswickedness.Andshouldhebeajustperson,heistemptedtoarroganceandgetspuffedup,beingledonbythesinofotherstoimagininggreatthingsconcerninghimself.Besidesthis,youhavestruckatthecommonwelfareoftheChurchher-self,forallthosewhohearyouwillnotonlyaccusethesupposedsinner,buttheentireChristiancommunity....AndsoIdesiretoDixthreepreceptsinyourmindsothatyoumayaccomplishthemduringthefast:tospeakillofnoone,toholdnooneforanenemy,andtoexpelfromyourmouthaltogethertheevilhabitofswearing.Forif,astheharvesterintheDieldscomestotheendofhislaborslittlebylittle,sowetooifwemakethisruleforourselvesandinanymannercometothecorrectpracticeofthesethreepreceptsduringthepresentLentandcom-mitthemtothesafecustodyofgoodhabit,weshallpro-ceedwithgreatereasetotherest,andbythismeansat-taintothesummitofspiritualwisdom.Andweshallreaptheharvestofafavorablehopeinthislife,andinthelifetocomeweshallstandbeforeChristwithgreatconDidenceandenjoythoseunspeakableblessingsofwhich,Godgrant,wemayallbefoundworthythroughthegraceofJesusChristourLord,withwhombeglorytotheFatherandtotheHolySpirituntoagesofages.Amen.

ThepersonwhoisaccustomedtogiveaccountofhislifeatConfessionwillnotfeartogiveananswerattheterribleJudgmentSeatofChrist.Forthispurposewasthemildtribunalofpeni-tenceinstituted,thatwemaygiveananswerwithoutshame,havingbeencleansedandhealedthroughrepentanceherebelow.Themoresincerelyweconfessoursins,themorecalmwillthesoulbeafterwards.Forsinsaresecretserpents,gnawingattheheartofaman,andneverlettinghimrest;theyarepricklythorns,constantlypiercingthesoul,theyarespiritualdarkness.Bearthesufferingsoftheoperationsothatyoumayberestoredtohealth—IspeakofConfes-sion.ImeanthatatConfession,youmustdeclareallyourshamefuldeedstoyourconfessor,withoutconcealment,thoughitmaywellbepainful,shameful,ignominious,andhumiliating.Otherwise,thewoundwillremainunhealed,willcontinuetopainyou,willundermineyourspiritualhealth,andwillbecomeacauseforotherspiritualweaknesses,orsinfulhabitsorvices.AssoonasyouhavetoldtheLordyoursins,withacontriteheart,theymeltaway;assoonasyouhavesighedandsorrowedforthem,theyarenomore.

Lazarus Saturday and Palm Sunday TheweekfollowingtheSundayofSaintMaryofEgyptiscalledPalmorBranchWeek.AttheTuesdayser-vicesofthisweektheChurchrecallsthatJesus’friendLazarushasdiedandthattheLordisgoingtoraisehimfromthedead(Jn11).AsthedayscontinuetowardSaturday,theChurch,initshymnsandverses,continuestofollowChristtowardsBethanytothetombofLazarus.OnFridayevening,theeveofthecele-brationoftheResurrectionofLazarus,the“greatandsavingfortydays”ofGreatLentareformallybroughttoanend:Havingaccomplishedthefortydaysforthebene;itofoursouls,wepraytoThee,OLoverofMan,thatwemayseetheholyweekofThypassion,thatinitwemayglorifyThygreatnessandThineunspeakableplanofsalva-tionforoursake...(VespersHymn).LazarusSaturdayisapaschalcele-bration.ItistheonlymeintheenreChurchYearthattheresurrec-tionalserviceofSundayiscelebrat-edonanotherday.AttheliturgyofLazarusSaturday,theChurchglori-DiesChristas“theResurrectionandtheLife”who,byraisingLazarus,hasconDirmedtheuniversalresur-rectionofmankindevenbeforeHisownsufferinganddeath.ByraisingLazarusfromthedeadbeforeThypassion,Thoudidstcon-;irmtheuniversalresurrection,OChristGod!Likethechildrenwiththebranchesofvictory,wecryouttoThee,OVanquisherofDeath:Hosan-nainthehighest!BlessedishethatcomesinthenameoftheLord!(Troparion).Christ—theJoy,theTruthandtheLightofAll,theLifeoftheworldanditsResurrection—hasappearedinhisgoodnesstothoseonearth.HehasbecometheImageofourResur-rection,grantingdivineforgivenesstoall(Kontakion).AttheDivineLiturgyofLazarusSaturdaythebaptismalversefromGalatians:Asmanyashavebeenbap
zedintoChristhaveputonChrist(Gal3.27)replacestheThrice-holyHymnthusindicatingtheresurrec-tionalcharacterofthecelebration,andthefactthatLazarusSaturdaywasonceamongthefewgreatbap-tismaldaysintheOrthodoxChurchYear.BecauseoftheresurrectionofLazarusfromthedead,Christwashailedbythemassesasthelong-expectedMessiah-KingofIsrael.Thus,infulDillmentoftheprophe-ciesoftheOldTestament,Heen-teredJerusalem,theCityoftheKing,ridingonthecoltofanass(Zech9.9;Jn12.12).ThecrowdsgreetedHimwithbranchesintheirhandsandcalledouttoHimwithshoutsofpraise:Hosanna!BlessedisHewhocomesinthenameoftheLord!TheSonofDavid!TheKingofIsrael!Be-causeofthisgloriDicationbythepeople,thepriestsandscribeswereDinallydriven“todestroyHim,toputHimtodeath”(Lk19.47;Jn11.53,12.10).ThefeastofChrist’striumphalEntryintoJerusalem,PalmSunday,isoneofthetwelvemajorfeastsoftheChurch.TheservicesofthisSundayfollowdirectlyfromthoseofLazarusSaturday.Thechurchbuild-ingcontinuestobevestedinresur-rectionalsplendor,DilledwithhymnswhichcontinuallyrepeattheHosannaofferedtoChristastheMessiah-KingwhocomesinthenameofGodtheFatherforthesal-vationoftheworld.ThemaintroparionofPalmSundayisthesameonesungonLazarusSaturday.Itissungatalloftheser-vices,andisusedattheDivineLiturgyasthethirdanphonwhichfollowstheotherspecialpsalmverseswhicharesungastheliturgi-calantiphonsintheplaceofthosenormallyused.Thesecondtropari-onofthefeast,aswellasthekon-takionandtheotherversesandhymns,allcontinuetoglorifyChrist’striumphalmanifestation“sixdaysbeforethePassover”whenhewillgivehimselfattheSupperandontheCrossforthelifeoftheworld.
TodaythegraceoftheHolySpirithasgatheredustogether.LetusalltakeupThycrossandsay:BlessedishewhocomesinthenameoftheLord.Hosannainthehighest!(FirstVerseofVespers).WhenwewereburiedwithTheeinbaptism,OChristGod,weweremadeworthyofeternallifebyThyresur-rection.NowwepraiseTheeandsing:Hosannainthehighest!BlessedishethatcomesinthenameoftheLord!(SecondTroparion).SittingonThythroneinheaven,andcarriedonafoalonearth,OChristGod,acceptthepraiseofangelsandthesongsofchildrenwhosing:BIessedishewhocomestorecallAdam!(Kontakion).AtthevigilofthefeastofPalmSun-daythepropheciesoftheOldTes-tamentabouttheMessiah-KingarereadtogetherwiththeGospelac-countsoftheentryofChristintoJerusalem.AtMatinsbranchesareblessedwhichthepeoplecarrythroughoutthecelebrationasthesignoftheirowngloriDicationofJe-susasSaviorandKing.Thesebranchesareusuallypalms,or,intheSlavicchurches,pussywillowswhichcametobecustomarybe-causeoftheiravailabilityandtheirearlyblossominginthespringme.AsthepeoplecarrytheirbranchesandsingtheirsongstotheLordonPalmSunday,theyarejudgedto-getherwiththeJerusalemcrowd.ForitwastheverysamevoiceswhichcriedHosannatoChrist,which,afewdayslater,criedCrucifyHim!ThusintheliturgyoftheChurchthelivesofmencontinuetobejudgedastheyhailChristwiththe“branchesofvictory”andentertogetherwithHimintothedaysofHis“voluntarypassion.”Source:OCA.ORG

Pascha Flowers ... The lenten season is now upon us, and soon Holy Week and Pascha will be here as well. Enclosed in this issue is an offering enve-lope for your donations to help offset the cost of flowers to decorate Christ's Tomb and the church for Pascha. Your generosi-ty will be greatly appreciated! We thank you and pray that you experience a re-warding and fruitful Lenten season and celebration of our Lord's Holy Pascha.
Preparing the church for Pascha:Volunteers are needed to clean the liturgical and altar items for Holy Week and Pascha. We will meet at 9:30a.m. on Friday, March 30. Cleaning supplies are pro-vided. Come and help out for a couple of hours!

A note on Confession... Everyone is expected to receive the sacrament of Holy Confession during the Lenten season. Confessions are heard following ves-pers on Saturday evenings, before Presanctified Liturgies at 4:30 p.m. or you can schedule an appointment with Father George. Please try not to come on Sunday mornings unless you live a great distance from church. You are also reminded to not wait until the very last minute . Prepare yourselves early! The last opportunity
