As we walk through this season of Lent, we are reminded of the reason for struggle and sacrifice that will come on Easter Sunday. Holy Week begins with Palm Sunday on Sunday, March 20 with a children’s Palm Parade in all three services. A service for Maundy Thursday will be on Thursday, March 24 at 6:30 p.m. in the sanctuary, and a Good Friday service will be on Friday, March 25 at 6:30 p.m. in the sanctuary. We will begin Easter on Sunday, March 27 with a Sunrise Service on Arlington Lawn in Downtown Hot Springs at 6:30 a.m. Easter Traditional services will be held in the sanctuary at 8:15 a.m. and 10:45 a.m., and The ConneXion service will be at 9:30 a.m. in the Christian Life Center.

Our Church will take the special Easter offering at each service on Easter Sunday. The offering is a vital part of our outreach missions and will be distributed to local ministries and international missions to help them continue their great work. The local ministries are The Caring Place; Cooperative Christian Ministry and Clinic (CCMC); Project Hope Food Bank; Samaritan Ministries; Garland Co. CASA; Garland Co. Habitat for Humanity; the Oaklawn Racetrack Chaplaincy; Our Promise Cancer Resources; and Safe Haven Shelter for Women and Children. We will also support our Open Arms FoodPantry with the offering. The international missions are the United Methodist Board of Global Missions project for missionaries around the world; Darrow Frazier, missionary with Cadence International ministry to U.S. military communities; and the FUMC Rio Bravo mission team.

Please be in prayer for the offering and for the ministries that it will support. Be sure to mark your gift specifically for the Easter Offering.

Our Bereavement Committee appreciates all those who help and cherish the faithfulness our church members have shown to our church and to the families of our congregation. They will be publishing recipes that members have prepared for the family meals and receptions each month.

Resurrection Rolls

1 package frozen rolls, thawed1 bag large marshmallows1/4 cup melted butter or margarine6 tablespoons sugar1 teaspoon cinnamon

Press the rolls into flat circles. Place a marshmallow in the center of each roll and pinch the dough around it. Roll the marshmallow-filled rolls into round balls. Brush each ball with butter and sprinkle it with sugar and cinnamon. Let the rolls rise for 30 to 45 minutes. Bake them at 350 degrees for 15 minutes or until golden brown. Cut open. Just like the tomb on Easter Sunday, these buns are empty!

DON’TMISS!A couple of years ago, I heard Phyllis Tickle in a video on ancient practices say that everyone should go on at least one pilgrimage in their lifetime. That suggestion resounded with something deep in my soul and the Camino de Santiago became a desire and dream. The Camino de Santiago is called The Way of St James and has different routes that lead to the Cathedral where the remains of St James, the apostle were laid to rest. Legend has it that St James’ remains accidently fell into the sea during transport and they washed up on shore covered in sea shells. The Camino Santiago has been a pilgrimage of many since the Middle Ages. It has recently received a revival in interest and this year has been proclaimed a year of jubilee by the Pope,

so special doors will be open in the cathedral. My son, Aaron, and I are walking the Portugal route because of the beautiful Portuguese countryside and wonderful people. Steve and I traveled the Douro River ten years ago and we were enchanted with the country. The journey will last 17 days and we will walk for 12 days from Porto, Portugal to Santiago de Compostela, Spain where we will get our compostela (certificate) for walking approximately 160 miles or 250 Kilometers. We will leave on April 25 (my birthday)

and return on May 11 (my son’s birthday). If you would like to follow us on our journey and my musings, like the Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/teresaspilgrimage/.

Pray With USFather, we arise and cry out to you as hungry and thirsty people. We give thanks and praise as we come into your presence. Help us, the corporate Church, to be awakened with the rhythms of the Spirit so that we can experience spiritual renewal. May we ever find intimacy in you and see the blessings poured out on the Church. Amen.

Our church member Linda Rickle is taking her annual trip to Honduras with Oakridge Tennessee Methodist Church and will take children’s clothing to give to the

people she will meet. There will be a big, labeled box in the Christian Life Center until the end of March to place any new or clean, gently used children’s clothing for the mission trip. Linda will be leaving for Honduras on April 1st. If you have any questions or would like more information on the trip, please contact Linda at 501.525.6589.

Dinner & A Movie Join us for our next Dinner and a Movie on Thursday, March 17th at 4:30 p.m. We will meet in the Christian Life Center’s Shelton Room for a light supper and then enjoy the movie and popcorn. The cost is $5 per person. We will be seeing The Intern with Robert De Niro and Anne Hathaway. 70-year-old widower Ben Whittaker (Robert De Niro) has discovered that retirement isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Seizing an opportunity to get back in the game, he becomes a senior intern for an online fashion site, founded and run by Jules Ostin (Anne Hathaway). Call Candy Poirier at 501.623.6668, ext. 117 by March 16th for reservations. See you there!

The Pack Shack Save the date for fellowship, fun and serving our community. Sunday, April 10th from 5-7PM, we will gather in Cupp Hall of the Christian Life Center to pack food for food pantries including ours, Open Arms. The Pack Shack throws crazy fun Feed the Funnel parties to pack delicious, nutritious,

easy-to-prepare meals for local hunger. Everyone is invited! Bring your family and friends for this exciting “Feed the Funnel Party”. There is a job for everyone—3 year olds to 103 years young in packaging the food (even those with physical limitations).

We are hoping to put together 15,000 meals for our community and surrounding areas. The Pack Shack will have all the supplies and will have everything ready and waiting for us all to get started at 5PM. Each meal costs just $0.25. Start saving your quarters so that we can multiply God’s blessings and help fight hunger in Hot Springs. We will have a place for your quarters at the Welcome Centers in both

Created by GOD: Human Sexuality Class For All 5th & 6th Graders The materials are presented to children in 5th-6th grades using a seminar format. Created by God teaches: I am uniquely created as God meant me to be; I am a good creation; God expects me to make responsible choices for myself, including those having to do with sexuality; How male and female bodies change during puberty and how reproduction occurs

Created by God provides time for answering questions the children have about sexuality. As with any gift, we are commissioned to be stewards of that which has been received. Each seminar begins with group-building and after a comfort level is achieved, values and choices are addressed. For this reason, families must make a commitment to attend all of the sessions. During the mandatory parent

orientation on on Thursday, April 7th from 6:00-8:00pm., parents will be presented an overview of the material, combined with the denomination’s approach and reasons for concern in the area of human sexuality. Finally, at least one parent is expected to attend the final 45 minutes of the last children’s session on Sunday, April 9th from 4-5pm.

Created by God will be offered at FUMC on Friday, April 8th from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. and Saturday, April 9th from 9:00 - 5:00 (with parent arrival at 4:00 for the final 45 minutes together). At least one parent for each child participating MUST attend the parent orientation, in order for their child to attend the workshop. Cost for each student will be $30.00. The fee includes lunch on Sunday and the cost of their student book, which they will take home at the conclusion of the seminar.

Registration is now open to all FUMC Members through March 10th. Enrollment will be limited to 20 students and the deadline is March 10th. On March 11th, we will begin OPEN enrollment for all other 5th & 6th graders, if there are still seats available. Once the class is full, all other children that did not have the opportunity to register will be put on a waiting list for the next available class, which is typically scheduled for Spring of the following year.

Kidz ROCK Mission Project I Can! of Arkansas is a non-profit organization dedicated to enriching the lives of individuals with special needs and their families. For this mission, please bring leotards, tights, or ballet skirts for the children that participate in I Can Dance! of Arkansas. Snack supper will be served. Don’t forget to bring your spare change!

Change will go toward needed supplies for the “I Can! Arkansas” program.

Thanks to all the kids who came out on Valentine’s day and made special gift tags and brought stuffed toys for our friends at the Cooper-Anthony Child Advocacy Center for children who are victims of child abuse in Garland County. The first annual Souper Bowl Cookoff was a great success! We had over 20 wonderful participants, all with unique and great tasting soups! All of the attendee’s got to taste each entry and re-taste if they found one that they really enjoyed. Donations were given in the tip jar of their favorite soup which determined the winning soup! We are thrilled to have the first and second place recipes available for you to try at home.

The Souper Bowl raised over $1,000 for youth missions! We are thrilled that we will be able to use this money for Spring Break and Summer Missions in order to keep the cost down for each student and pay the way of our fearless chaperones. This Spring Break we will be taking students to St. Louis to experience intercity mission work, including volunteering in a soup kitchen and helping at the Boys and Girls Club. We will also have a little fun in the evening at the City Museum and going to the top of the Arch. This summer, students will be participating in Ozark Mission Project in Camden, AR. This organization gathers students from all over Arkansas to come together and work in family groups (4 kids and 1 adult) to help our neighbors in need. Work includes painting, building fences or wheelchair ramps, yard work and most importantly visiting with the neighbor and sharing lunch and a devotion with them daily. After working from 9-4 each night, there is worship and fellowship with fellow campers and leaders. We are looking for chaperones (you do not have to be a parent of a youth) so if you are interested please contact Liz Robinson at [email protected].

Ringers Needed We now have two bell choirs again; the Chancel Ringers, who meet on Monday mornings from 11:00 to 12:00, and the Sanctuary Bells, who meet on Wednesdays from 5:15 to 6:15. Both choirs have openings for ringers. We could especially use 1 ringer for the Chancel Ringers and 2 to 3 for the Sanctuary Bells. No previous experience is needed, just a desire to make music and worship God in a unique and fun way. If interested, email Tim at [email protected].

Chancel Choir and seasonal Singers We will soon start preparing music for Easter, so keep an eye on your email for an announcement as to when we will start preparing that music. And if you are not currently participating in choir, but would like to start singing with us, now is a great time to join us. Choir practice is on Wednesday evenings from 6:30 to 8:00. If you attend the 8:15 Traditional Worship service, we could especially use your talents in the choir loft. If you are interested in choir, please email Tim at [email protected].

Hymnody 101 Methodists have long been known as “a singing people”, and I believe that description remains appropriate to this day. Charles Wesley was one of the most prolific hymn writers ever. John Wesley also composed and translated hymns. In America, hymn-singing was an important part of the tradition of camp meetings, religious worship, and revival services common throughout the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The current United Methodist Hymnal is one of the most successful hymnals ever published.

While certainly not all of we Methodists can sing or like singing, the denomination as a whole was and is a tuneful one. We don’t always agree on the hymns we sing and some of them may not be as familiar to us as others. However, when we only sing hymns that are familiar to us, or that we like the most, during a worship service, we may deprive ourselves of a deeper worship experience. This is a primary reason for the annual publication of The United Methodist Music and Worship Planner. This publication assists worship planners in picking scriptures, hymns, anthems and other elements that follow the liturgical calendar. Another great source for worship planning is the website www.hymnary.org. I invite you to check out this site. It includes hymns from every mainline denomination and gives historical background on each hymn. It also includes many recordings of hymns. A feature that is especially helpful for worship planning is the tab that allows one to pick a scripture passage. When the passage is chosen, immediately an entire list of hymns appropriate to the scripture is opened. This feature is especially helpful when the normal lectionary is not being used. Weaving the hymns into the fabric of the scriptures and sermon for the day will lead to a more substantive and fulfilling worship experience.
