President’s MessageProf. Constantine Psimopoulos

With our eyes, minds and hearts set towards warmer weather, allow me to 'springforward' about a month early and wish you "Spring Greetings"! Before taking an-other stride and going any further, let's reflect upon the latter part of 2015 for just abrief moment: From our amazing State Convention and the first ever student postersession — kudos to our laureate Theoklitos Karypidis from Springfield College(Karypidis & Gargalianos, 2015) — to the achievement of a lifetime with the eleva-tion of the role of both health and physical education in their inclusion as part of astudent's "well-rounded" education for America's children (ESSA — Every StudentSucceeds Act). A historical benchmark for our field, the ESSA was signed into lawon December 10, 2015 by President Barack Obama upon the reauthorization of ESEA.

Kudos also are in order for our many and truly worthy award recipients, who demonstrate that excel-lence and its pursuit is portrayed in a plethora of ways and noted by us on the executive board with theintention to be made public so that others will follow the awardees' example and emulate their achieve-ments. Those awards will be presented at our Annual Awards Banquet, on Sunday April 10. I would like topersonally thank the Awards co-chairs Cindy Coughlin and Tina Taylor together with TOY chair BarbiKelley for their hard, diligent and thorough work in evaluating nominations and selecting those recipients.

This time last year I had written in the newsletter about SPEAK Out! Day and how important it was tocontinue to advocate for our profession at the national level, and at our Nation's Capitol on and aroundCapitol Hill in Washington, DC. Last month, we secured travel scholarships from SHAPE America whichwill offset expenses for two students who will join me at this year's SPEAK Out! Day scheduled for March 1-2, 2016. Thus, it will be the 8th consecutive year (attended every one since its inception in 2009) that I willbe attending but furthermore, this year I met an important goal set in advance for my presidential yearwhich was to increase (and this ended up being by 100%, from 1 student to 2!) the participation of studentswho also get training and acquire skills on how to advocate for quality health and PE at the federal level. Itis also the first time ever that a three member delegation from MA (including 2 doctoral students) will headout to Capitol Hill.

Shane Staats and Sarah Woodward, PhD students from Springfield College and I, as President ofMAHPERD, will join 190 other delegates from 45 States and collectively will ask Congress to fully fundESSA in FY2017, and specifically to fund Title IV Part A of ESSA at $1.65 billion. This will allow health andPE programs to have access to significant funding. Under Title IV, block grants will be distributed to states, replacing the previous Carol M. White Physical Education Program (PEP) grant. We will also seek supportfor implementing ESSA in our State (MA) in a way that is advantageous and equitable for health and PE sothat these programs can continue to support lifelong healthy habits of all students.

Shane and Sarah will come with me to the offices of our Congressional representatives and our Sena-tors, Ed Markey and Elizabeth Warren; as a result of our advocacy the previous 2 years both became co-signers of the PHYSICAL Act, a precursor to the formulation of the ESSA and both were also instrumentalin mustering the support to get Health and Physical Education included in it. MAHPERD will also partici-pate in the first ever Shape of the Nation Summit in DC this March, during which state PE policy opportu-nities and a preview of the highly anticipated Shape of the Nation Report coming out later this year will behighlighted. The report gives a snap shot of PE and physical activity policies across the country. Addition-ally, information will be shared on how health and PE professionals can get involved in 50 Million Strong by2029, SHAPE America's national commitment to empower all children to lead healthy and active livesthrough health and PE programs.

With all the above and the exciting events to come, starting with our MAHPERD Spring Conference.Mark your calendars for March 28 at Salem State University. This year's theme is "Health and PhysEdCamp". I remain excited for the rest of my presidential term and look forward to working with each andevery one of you on the multiple things we are planning!

Sincerely Yours in Health and Physical Education,President of MAHPERDProfessor Constantine Psimopoulos

MAHPERD’s3rd Annual

Leadership Conferencefor Directors and Lead Teachers

June 27-28, 2016Hilton Garden Inn, Worcester, MA

Schedule Details and Registration will be available April 1, 2016via E-blast and MAHPERD website.

From the Desk of the Executive DirectorMaria Melchionda

It’s amazing how many professionals do not become members because they do not go to the Convention. The Convention is not the only thing that is offered within our organization!

We are meeting with the Department of Education once again to foster our relationship in the variousarenas of licensing; quality programming; revisiting frameworks and sharing initiatives. We continue to tryto build our bridge to them and make it strong for the students of the Commonwealth. We also continue tokeep health and physical education programs in the forefront so that all recognize the importance of it inthe school curriculum.

Our strong bond with the MA PTA has catapulted our advocacy efforts and education of our programsto new levels. We are very viable and visible with them and plans to meet and assist them with their Health& Safety Conference for parents are underway as well as they asking us to present and inform parents onthe necessity of health and physical education.

MAHPERD also leads the nation in establishing a Pilot Study with Interactive Health Technologies(IHT) https://ihtusa.com/who-we-serve/state-associations/

In all the years I have been to the State House for MAHPERD, legislators frequently ask me for “numbers”or reports on physical education programs. We have never had a “clearinghouse” for data for programs inour state. IHT was the perfect fit for us in starting to collect data in the psychomotor, cognitive andaffective areas. We have a total of 15 school districts that are gathering data using PE Metrics, Fitness Gramand other assessments in the three domains. IHT’s Spirit System is very user friendly and we will be askingother districts to come “on board” with us this Spring with significant discounts in the software and MAHPERDsponsored trainings for all teachers interested! Stay tuned!

Finally, ask colleagues that have not joined to come with you to any of our MAHPERD professionaldevelopment opportunities. Passion, commitment, sharing and interacting with others in the field inspireall of us to do our jobs well. There is the Spring Conference, the Adapted PE Conference, the LeadershipConference for Directors and Lead Teachers and the MAHPERD Health Institute coming your way! Bethere to share and enjoy the camaraderie of others.

My best,Maria

MAHPERD Leads the Nation with IHT in Statewide Pilot!Ten school districts selected from across Massachusetts are part of

an innovative pilot program that is putting into practice the on-goingresearch which has revealed the significant role of movement and physicalactivity in brain development and the important fact that healthy, activechildren are more focused and ready to learn; validating it through daily-to-yearly classroom data collection. Championed by the MassachusettsHealth, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance Association(MAHPERD), which is the largest professional organization for physicaleducation and health teachers across the state and a dedicated researchteam from Springfield College, the aim is to create a viable, large scalemodel for schools and districts across the state and nation to easily capturedaily physical activity, District Determined Measures and customizedassessments, and correlate that data to each student’s academic successfrom kindergarten through graduation day, while connecting all stakeholdersin the process.

Starting in January 2016, MAHPERD, the 10 partnering schooldistricts, Springfield College, and Austin, TX based educational technologycompany, Interactive Health Technologies (IHT), are initiating a strategythat is using IHT’s web-based assessment software that has the ability tobuild a personal wellness portfolio for each student daily-to-yearly. It canbe customized to meet the needs of each individual teacher, school, districtand the state’s overall goals and mandates. The goals of the initiative areto create a statewide model designed to enrich the learning experiencefor individual students, empowering them to take personal ownership andresponsibility of their health, while keeping parents, students and teachersconnected through an ongoing communication network. It will also createa more strategic use of physical education, active play recesses, beforeand after school programs, and in-class activity breaks to significantlyimprove and measure the learning process for children. The aggregatedata from class, school, district and the state levels will strengthen eachschools and districts implementation of their District Determined Measuresand their district-wide Comprehensive School Physical Activity Program.

The program looks to better align the district-wide implementation, capture and reporting for their District Determined Measures, the state’snew educator evaluation system which requires educators to beginidentifying and implementing District-Determined Measures – DDMs – ofstudent growth. DDMs must be developed for all licensed educators in allgrades and subjects, as well as for all administrators (for example, guidancecounselors, physical education teachers, principals, superintendents, reading specialists and art teachers).

“If physical education is to thrive within the academic school day andmeet the needs of the state’s requirements of District DeterminedMeasures, administrators, parents and legislators must understand itsimportance within the school curriculum. The software from IHT will beused as a tool to educate all on how quality physical education can have asignificant impact on academic performance and improve the overall healthand fitness of students.” said MAHPERD Executive Director, MariaMelchionda. “This initiative will enable physical educators to collect neededdata that encompasses observable, measureable and documental evidencewhich can drive curriculum instruction and help determine an educator’simpact on student learning, through quality physical education and acoordinated school health model.”

To accomplish these goals, 10 key physical education teachers in 10districts have been provided IHT’s software and training at no cost to utilizein their classrooms and demonstrate the association between theimprovement in childhood health and fitness with a variety of academic, affective and physical variables. The program aims to better bridge thevalue and contributions of quality physical education and its impact on theoverall academic school day, working on improved student assessmentand school accountability efforts laid out by state regulations. It will alsostreamline classroom management, assessment requirements for teachersand better communication and connection between all stakeholders.

As the initiative gains success, MAHPERD plans to expand theprogram statewide, offering the software and reporting capabilities to otherschools and districts. Interested schools for the Fall 2016 should contactMAHPERD Executive Director at [email protected] MAHPERD isactively pursuing grants and funding opportunities to ensure the programremains cost effective and sustainable for schools.

Jen Ohlson, Founder and President, Interactive Health Technologiessaid, “We are extremely excited about this new partnership with MAHPERD,Springfield College, our founding districts, and the world class teachersinvolved. Our goal is to help teachers, schools, districts and the statemeasure the effectiveness of their overall efforts to build strong coordinationand synergy across all aspects of a student’s health, from physicaleducation, physical activity during academic classes, physical activitybefore and after school, staff involvement, and family and communityengagement, while improving student academic outcomes, K-12. Bybringing this shared vision together with data, we can make great changehappen.”
