DON’T FORGET!

Page 5: March 2015 MMHLAMMHLAmmhla.com/pdf/0315Newsletter.pdf · with Heartland Payment Systems® — the Tennessee Hospitality Association’s exclusively endorsed provider of card pro-cessing,

The story of the ice storm, the dog and a hotel. So, Mary and several other MMHLA‘ers early this month traveled down the road to Nashville to visit

with state and local officials and discuss matters affecting the hospitality industry. It’s an important yearly trip, because it’s always a good idea to keep those representing you in governmental matters informed of your desires and needs.Well, me being the forgetful person I am, I neglected to warn her of the approaching March newsletter

deadline. Now, not wanting to admit my error by pressuring her at the last minute, I’ve decided to write it myself.

Wayne LewisMMHLA Editor

But pretending to be someone else is hard, so here I am admitting my error to all, and admitting I don’t know what to write about anyway. So . . . I’ll tell a story. Since it’s a hotel story

it at least has some measure of pertinence. When was the Great Memphis Ice Storm?

I know hoteliers move around a lot, so a lot of you probably don’t know. I think it was 1994. The entire city woke one winter morn-ing to the cracks, snaps, pops and booms of trees breaking under the cold weight and crashing to the ground. And into houses and buildings, on top of cars and across roads, crushing fences, snapping power lines and miraculously landing on very few people. But the city came to a halt – some parts for

two to three weeks or even more. For me, my wife, two kids and one dog, it was eight days. No water, no heat, no power. Like many others, we moved into a hotel, a Qual-ity Inn at Poplar & I-240.They accepted pets, but small ones and

Mike, an airedale mix, was not one of those. But he was old, 18 years, and we didn’t want to leave him for a long stay in the ice. Management, hearing our story, was very understanding and said, sure, Mike could come.So we lived there for eight days, the five

of us. Mike and I rode the elevator twice a day for our walks and he became something of an in-house celebrity, like old men play-ing chess in New York City’s Washington Square.Nor was he the only pet in the building. In

fact, all over Memphis, hotels were breaking their occupancy restrictions, bending rules, to bring Memphians in out of the cold. It felt, at least where we were and I’m sure all over the city, like a large extended family gath-ered for a reunion or something. To this day I don’t cross I-240 at Poplar

without thinking about it.Hotel people are good people. There’s no

business like show business, huh? We’re all in show business. And we’re all here to help one another get through the tough spots til that next show.
