On 31st March Yumiko Asakuma, Chief Representative of JICA Bhutan Office & Sonam Wangchuk, Secretary, Gross National Happiness Commission signed an agreement for Grant Aid to reconstruct bridges on Primary National Highway No. 1. The agreement includes the reconstruction of three bridges along the Primary National High No.1 which are Chuzomsa Zam, Nikachu Zam and Zalamchu Zam. On the same day, the Record of Discussion for the Technical Cooperation Project on “ Support for Community Engagement in Local Governance” was also signed between the Chief Representative, JICA Bhutan Office and Secretary , Gross National Happiness Commission. The members recognized the vulnerable area in the project target basins of Mangdechhu and Chamkharchhu under the several scenarios of GLOF and rainstorms. Mr. Karma Tsering, Director of DHMS addressed that the prepared maps can be utilized not only for community evacuation plan but also for damage assessment in order to propose the effective countermeasures and development plans in the target basins.

Ms. Yumiko Asakuma, Chief Representative of JICA was the Guest of Honor at the closing ceremony of the Horticulture Research and Development project at Wengkhar. The technical cooperation project began in March 2010 and was implemented by the Department of Agriculture and JICA for a period of 4 fours years. It was a very much appreciated by the government and people of Bhutan. Tthe Japanese experts engaged in the project received special awards from His Majesty the King for its contribution to the sustainable development of farming in Bhutan.

Rural Enterprise Development Participants of the country focused training “Community Entrepreneurial Capacity and Rural Enterprise Development” carried out test programs using the Decentralised Hands on Exhibition Approach (DHOE) at Trongsa. The DHOE approach which the participants learnt sthrough their month long training in Japan and Thailand is an exhibition of products and services at the production site so that producers can show their products and resources as well as give an opportunity for the visitors a hands-on experience.

In the year 2014, a total of 15 participants from central government agencies, local government agencies, business development service providers and community enterprise took part in the training course organized by JICA.
