Cole Undefeated At Knobbys

Tyson Cole turned in an undefeated performance at Knobby’s 9 & Under 8-Ball event on February 6th.

Cole’s run included wins over Birthday Boy Bruce Hirose, Frank Alvarez, Scott Perry and then Burt Balancad in the hot-seat match.

On the left side of the board, Scott Perry was riding high after defeating Ed Scott with an 8-ball break at hill-hill. He followed that up with a 2-1 win over Balancad to earn another shot at Cole in the finals.

Cole kicked off the finals with a break and run, and then won game #2 for a 2-0 win and first place in the event.

The Arizona Women’s Billard Tour (AWBT) kicked off their 2015 Season on February 28th at Skip and Jan’s in Tempe with twenty eight play-ers representing Phoenix, Tucson and Prescott, as well as California, New Mexico and Nevada.

First round surprises saw tour veteran Susan Williams taking a first round forfeit loss as she couldn’t make it to her match in time. Susan was joined on the one loss side by Jaye Succo after a first round loss to Veronica Poore and Tracie Hamman who lost to Donna Taylor.

As Saturday play narrowed the field, the winners side came down to four players. Bernie Store and Sara Miller were heading towards a face off on one half of the bracket, while Veronica Poore and San Diego’s Cynthia Haefner were setting their sights on each other on the other half of the bracket.

As Saturday play ended, Claudia Justus elimi-nated Susan Williams 7-6 in 9th place. Other late Saturday matches saw Jodie Villegas eliminate Tami Hathcock 7-5, Barbara Lee beat Cathy Kel-ley 7-5 and Tina Hess defeating Beth Orth 7-4.

Sunday play began on the winners side where Bernie Store snuck by Sara Miller 7-6 and Cyn-thia Haefner sent Veronica Poore to the one loss side 7-3.

The one loss side saw Barbara Lee defeat Tina Hess 7-6 and Jodie Villegas eliminate Claudia Justus 7-3. Lee then went on to end Poore’s tournament in 5th place while Sara Miller was sending Villegas to the seats in 5th place to join Poore.

Barbara Lee kept her strong play going as she

eliminated Sara Miller 7-4 and then went on to send Haefner back to Cali-fornia in third place 7-2.

As strong as Lee had been playing, she had no answer for Bernie Store in the finals, as Bernie cruised to a one-sided 9-3 win in the extended final match.

Sixteen players came back on Sun-day to compete in the second chance tournament, which saw Heather Cortez (formerly Torpin) complete an undefeated run with a hill-hill win over Justine Bishop in the finals for first place.

Tour staff expressed their thanks to Natalie and her great staff at Skip and Jan’s for host-ing their season opener. Thanks were also given to the “friends of the AWBT” who added $100 to the main event and $50 to the second chance tournament, as well

as Las Gloria Grille for adding $100 to the main event.

The AWBT will be at Bullshooters in Phoenix for their next event in April 25th and 26th.

A new tournament format and new sponsors helped to draw eighty six players to Skip & Jan’s Sports Bar in Tempe, AZ on February 7th and 8th for the Arizona State Barbox 10-Ball Championship and season opener of the new Diamond Pool Tour presented by Casino Del Sol Resort (formerly the Desert Classic Tour). With the field divided between “A” players and “B” players, the “A” bracket held twenty nine of the top players from Arizona and New Mexico. This bracket was won by Scott Frost, who had tough matches with Arizona bar table special-ist Jon Smith and local hot-shot Bobby Emmons at the end of his quest. On the one loss side, Donivan Pedroncelli scored impressive wins over Smith and Donald Mangahas before falling to Emmons. The “B” bracket held a whopping fifty seven players with no clear cut favorites in sight. The bracket was won by New Mexico’s Linn Vissage, who defeated recently crowned AZ State Senior Barbox Champion Guyle “Tom” Fielder 7-2 for the hot-seat. Fielder then dropped a lopsided 7-0 decision to Spike Aiardo on the one loss side. The two brackets combined on Sunday afternoon and Frost took the final hot-seat with a 7-2 win over Vissage. On the one loss side, Emmons ran over Aiardo 7-1 and then sent Vissage back to New Mexico with a 7-4 win. This left Emmons and Frost facing off for the tournament win. The first set went to Emmons 7-4, but Frost looked to have the advantage in set #2. Emmons came back from an early deficit though, and tied the score at 6-6, setting up one game for the title. Emmons would get out of line during a fairly routine out in that final game and Frost pounced on the unexpected chance back at the table. Frost effortlessly ran out the remaining balls for the title. Thirteen players came back on Sunday to compete in the Neil’s Garage Cabinets Second Chance tournament. This event would see Burt Balancad put together an undefeated run with wins over Matt Gagne, Bernie Store, junior player Nick Kline and Steve Blackburn in the finals for the win. Blackburn would finish in second place and Kline would take third. Kline was also the winner of the “top junior” bonus, sponsored by the Phoenix APA league. The Greenmail Top Female Finisher bonus went to Bernie Store and there was no winner of the Greenmail Bounty, as 2014 Desert Classic Tour season finale winner Mitch Ellerman was not in attendance at this event. The Greenmail Bounty will be on Frost at Stop #2, on the 9’ tables at Bullshooters on March 14th and 15th. Event organizers expressed their thanks to Natalie at Skip & Jan’s for hosting this great event, Cassie at Skip & Jan’s for being a complete rock star in putting up with all of the players over two days, Rick Schmitz for the great photos and “Fast” Lenny Marshall & George Teyechea for the great job of streaming both days of the event. Tim Page & Amanda Pulley joined Eric Lervold & Priscilla Hernandez in the winners circle on Valentine’s Day to celebrate a split of first and second place at Skip & Jan’s Jack & Jill Scotch Doubles event.

Tim & Amanda met Eric & Priscilla in the match for the hot-seat, and scored a hard fought 6-4 win.

Brian & Veronica Poore were on a roll on the one loss side. After eliminating John Dial & Tami Hathcock 6-4, they went on to then eliminate Cathy Kelley & Terry Nichols 6-3.

The Poore’s would have to settle for 3rd place though, as they dropped the semi-final match to Eric & Priscilla.

By the time the finals were ready to start, Valentines Day was long over, and both teams agreed on a split instead of playing out the matches.

Reich Wins One Pocket Madness

Brian Reich came back from an early loss to Jake Powell and won Bullshooter’s One Pocket Madness event on February 14th.

Reich’s 2-0 loss to Powell came in the final four on the winner’s side, but it would not be the last that Powell would see of Reich on this day.

Powell would go on to play for the hot-seat, but he lost that match 2-0 to Bernie Pettipiece.

Reich put together a one loss side winning streak with wins over Paul Feltman Sr., Terry Osborne and then Powell 2-0.

The finals was one race to three and it came down to the wire with Reich scor-ing a 3-2 win over Pettipiece for first place.

Complete Payouts:1st Brian Reich $2302nd Bernie Pettipiece $1703rd Jake Powell $1104th Terry Osborne $70

The Arizona Ratings Committee held their first meeting of the new year at Bullshooters on Feb-ruary 22nd.

New business included welcoming Steve Black-burn as a new player rep, and voting to accept Jim Digregorio as a representative for the Mari-copa area.

In order to combat the problems in getting new ratings out to members, the committee had cre-ated a members only website back in December that allowed members to search for players and their ratings. A vote was taken and the committee decided to make that website public for anyone to search. That website was moved to azpoolrat-ings.com.

A rule was reimplemented at the meeting that will see a member removed from the committee for missing two straight meetings without a valid excuse.

The following players saw their ratings change at the meeting…

Ken Eberhart Lowered from 9 to 8Charlie Heun 6 to 7Susan Wilbur 7 to 8Brad Johnson 8 to 9Scott Dunham 5 to 6Dave Lowley 6 to 7Geoff Olsen 6 to 7Dave Wilson 5 to 7Percival Hauregui 7 to 8Abie Padilla 5 to 6Perfecto Diaz 6 to 7Robbin Grammatico 5 to 6Christ Aiardo 8 to 9Tami Hathcock 6 to 7

APA Phoenix Metro will be sending three 8 ball mixed scotch doubles teams, Two Jack & Jill 8 ball scotch doubles teams and one 9 ball mixed doubles team to the Las Vegas APA National Championships for their respective events later this year. 8 and 9 ball doubles events will be held at the Riviera Hotel and Casino during the April National Singles Championships while the Jack & Jill doubles will be held at the APA’s new home, the Westgate Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, during the APA’s National Team Champi-onships in the month of August. This year’s participants for the Jack & Jill Scotch Doubles are Joe Shipley and Gwen Kaiser from the Stadium Club in Chandler. Both Joe and Gwen play on the same 5 player team from that home bar. They both played exceptionally well in the qualifier tournament that won them the trip to Vegas. Each year on or near Valentine’s Day, APA Phoenix Metro holds a qualifying event called the Jack & Jill Valentine’s Day Tourna-ment to allow one team to qualify for this Cham-pionship event. In other qualifying tournaments, Joe Shipley and Keven Hutson Qualified for one of the three 8 Ball Doubles spots and Sandeep Sharma and Martin Rosales Qualified for the only 9 Ball Doubles spot. These players have played against each other for many seasons and now they have the chance to play together on the same team in a National Event held in the Las Vegas spotlight. All of the qualifying tournaments were held in Mesa at Main Street Billiards, APA Phoenix Metro’s east valley home bar. The staff at Main Street Billiards always makes us feel at home, said Gina Nowlin, the APA league operator here in Phoenix.

Each team receives their entry fee paid for and a traveling expense to help with the expenses of driving and staying in Las Vegas. We still have one Jack & Jill spot and two more 8 Ball Doubles spots to be filled. There is an 8 ball doubles division that will be finishing up their session later this month to give us one slot and the same with a Jack & Jill weekly division played at Bullshooters in Phoenix. Another event that sends teams to Las Vegas is our annual Southwest Challenge Tune up and Qualifier Tournament. This tournament is a three person team event that sends the winning team to Las Vegas for the 8 Ball Southwest Challenge. This event has been a popular tournament among the APA players throughout the Southwest region of the United States for over 20 years. This tournament is also held at the Riviera Hotel and Ca-sino and is as much of an experience for the players as any of the National Championships. This year APA Phoe-nix Metro will be sending 3 players who have been part of our league for several years. Brad Andrews, Martin Rosales and Oscar Herrera will repre-sent us this season.

We will all of our teams and players attending the events in Vegas this year lots of luck....

The American Cuesports of Arizona league held their 11th Annual Arizona State Singles and Teams Championships, once again at Bullshoot-ers in Phoenix, on February 20th - 22nd with over 100 players looking to earn state titles. By the end of the weekend, two brand new state singles champions joined two new state team champions, with the exception of one player who repeated his win from last year.

The Open Singles division looked to belong to Jake Mulville, from the Sharks League, as he ran through the winners side and captured the hot-seat with a win over Robert Thomas, from the Sharks League. Little did Jake and Robert know, but Chris Carpenter, from the Sharks League, was on a mission after losing his first round match to Brian Shepherd. Chris came through the one loss side with six straight wins and then double dipped Jake in the finals for his first ACSA State Championship.

The Ladies Singles division would see no late heroics as Tina Hess ran through the field un-defeated. Hess defeated fellow Sharks League player Teri Curtis for the hot-seat and then de-feated Jennifer Engles, from the Mohave League, in the finals. The win was Tina’s first ACSA State Championship.

The Open Team event saw defending Singles and Teams Champion Tyler Fleishman bring four new teammates with him to help win another ACSA State Title. Tyler and his teammates (Craig Goodman, Jeff Roe, John Homerding and Eric Ontiveros) made up Bad Attitude, from the Strokers League. Bad Attitude took the hot-seat with a win over Tuff Breaks (Bill Huddard, Glen Croker, Walt Moros, Filberto Reguenb and Genovevo Lucio). Tuff Breaks would then lose

to the Nugget Misfits on the one loss side and settle for third place. The Nugget Misfits (Teresa Eisner, Terry Walker, Abel Saenz, Glenn Lampe and Brian Shepherd) had lost to Bad Attitude once already in this event, but redeemed that loss with a win in the first round of the double elimination finals. The rubber match to deter-mine State Champions would go to Bad Attitude with Fleishman repeating as a member of the State Champi-onship team.

Without the defending Champions or runners up com-peting this year, the Ladies Team Division was wide open for a new team of Champions. Early on, that team looked to be Focused (Laura Newton, Sue Goodman, Michelle Miller and Becky Zimmer), from the Prescott Billiards Association. Focused took the hot-seat with a win over the Deli Avengers (Jodi Hirning, Shelly McCormick, Trisha Ochsner and Robbin Grammatico). On the one loss side, Those Girls (Windy Breck, Jean Snow, Sharon Anderson, Becky Onnembo and Linda Nichles), from the East Valley Legacy League, were on a roll after losing their first match of the day. Three matches later, Those Girls had defeated the Deli Aveng-ers and were looking to double dip Focused. They would get those two wins to defeat Focused and earn their first State Title.

Tournament directors Lee White and Jodi Hirning expressed their thanks to Mike and Julie Bates, as well as their great staff, for hosting another successful state championship.

Pettipiece over Young for One Pocket Win

Bernie Pettipiece ended the day with two hill-hill wins over Eric Young to win Kolby’s Handicapped One Pocket event in February 28th.

The first time Bernie and Eric met was for the hot-seat, where Bernie scored a 2-1 win.

The one loss side was a veritable minefield of obstacles with Scott Frost losing an early match to Pettipiece and Bobby Emmons losing to Bret Huth early on. Emmons would eliminate Frost 2-1 and then get revenge over Huth 2-0. Em-mons would have to settle for third place though, as Eric beat him 2-0 in the semi final match.

The finals was a rematch between Pettipiece and Young, with Bernie scoring the 3-2 win for first place.

Traveling for Pool Tournaments: The Cost and Rewards

By Carl StewartBCA Certified Instructor

I recently attended the 7th Annual Chuck Markulis Memorial Tournament at Hardtimes billiards in Sacramento, CA. The event fea-tured the format Chuck used and made very popular of having a one-pocket event and then follow up with a 9-ball event. I played in the 9-ball portion. As I reflect on my trip, traveling is expensive and I seem to be doing it less and less. Living in Phoenix, we are so lucky to have many great tournaments and even tours just across town.

I do think traveling for pool tournaments offers rewards though. There is nothing like playing in front of people that have never seen you play. If you have a good, great, subpar or even a poor match, no one knows if that is your true game. I played and met players for the first time from all over the world. In addition, Hardtimes has the best, toughest and most well-maintained equipment I have ever seen. I noticed the dif-ference between the gold crowns (which Hard-times has 30 plus of them) and the diamond tables I have fell in love with. I also noticed how out of practice I am on the 4.5x 9 tables after playing on so many Baby Diamonds.

How to justify the cost of airfare, rental car, hotels, food etc. I start with the fact that you

only live once and I try to live life to the fullest. Nevertheless, as I mentioned earlier, I find my-self not going as much with the higher costs. I try to plan for the most bang for the trip. Chuck at Hardtimes started the jamboree format know-ing players were already making the trip and most tour stops have designed a second chance event following days of the main event.

Another benefit from traveling is meeting new friends and with Facebook these days, it is much easier to compare notes for tournaments. I met the operator of the Behind the Rock Tour. This tour has a new format with you playing the ghost. Check it out at www.behindtherocktour.com. It is a very interesting format playing the ghost.

Always keep pushing forward, as part of ad-vancing your game is stepping out of your com-fort zone, which means traveling to new rooms and playing new players.

Conceding Game Balls

By Roger LongCertified Instructor

What began as a common courtesy seems to have turned into a common sharking technique.

I’m sure we’ve all seen instances in matches where a seated opponent will concede the game with a “that’s good” to the shooting player when that player has run out a rack and left himself a short, straight-in shot on the game ball. This has become a very common occur-rence in tournament matches, money matches, and fun matches; but its existence sometimes causes more problems than it avoids.

Let’s take a look at how and why this practice got started and what it seems to have evolved into today.

I believe that the initial intent behind conced-ing balls was to show a courtesy to the shoot-ing player. It was a show of respect. Why have a player shoot a short, straight-in game ball? It was a waste of time. It also seemed a bit disrespectful to require a person to shoot such an easy final shot when he had just fin-ished pocketing several tougher shots leading up to that final ball. To that end, game-ball concession was a decent act.

But now we’ll look at some of the other ways ball concessions are used.

Twenty-some years ago, I was playing in a tournament down in Florida and early in the match my opponent started conceding balls to me. And it wasn’t just the game ball being conceded; at times it was more than half the rack. Now my opponent was an extremely good player so I knew he wasn’t conceding balls out of respect for my ability. Somewhat perplexed, I went over to a mutual friend and asked him if he knew why his buddy was conceding games to me. His answer was, “He doesn’t want you to get in stroke.” That’s when I first realized that game concessions could mean more than a show of courtesy and respect. My opponent was just trying to keep me off guard until such time that he could get to the table and lay some confidence-wrecking safeties on me and then really take over the match. And he did, too! Obviously, there was no courtesy or respect intended in that match.

Since that time in Florida, I’ve seen some strange things happen. I’ve seen professional players miscue on easy game balls; which means it’s a good thing for their opponents that they didn’t concede those games to them. That would be one argument against ball conces-sion. This would be another: I’ve seen players make their opponents shoot the first game ball in a set — then concede the next few — then

go back to making them shoot all balls again. That’s ridiculous. Alternating between conced-ing and not conceding game balls accomplishes nothing more than to get inside the shooter’s head. It makes him think, “He gave me the last one, why isn’t he giving me this one?” Of course, that’s exactly what the seated player wants to happen!

Pool is a game of skill and its very nature requires a clear-cut winner. This is especially true in games where there is something at stake. And unless it’s a social game between two non-gambling friends, there is always something at stake.

Conceding balls in pool taints the spirit of the game; it bends the rule that says the person sinking the game ball on a legal shot wins the game. But yet, we see this rule being bent all the time. We don’t see concessions being made in any other sport, so why do we see them in pool? For instance, in basketball, you don’t see someone conceding a free throw to a player just because he is a 98% free throw shooter. No, you make him earn that point! I’ve seen ball concession become just one more chink in pool’s armor. It has become more of a shark-ing technique than a courtesy. Recently, I saw a match between two of my friends almost turn into a physical fight because of a dispute over whether or not the game ball was being con-ceded. Is that what we want in pool?

I can think of no good reason to concede balls in pool, can you? The simple solution to avoid-ing fights, disputes, and confusion, is to get in the practice of shooting all balls, all the time.

Winkler & Moore Win at Kittys

Dennis Winkler & Randell Moore teamed up to win Kitty’s 13 & Under Scotch Doubles event by the smallest of margins.

Dennis & Randell took the hot-seat with a hill-hill (8-6) win over Emmitt Webb & Laura Boothroyd.

Emmitt & Laura didn’t stay on the one loss side for long though, as they scored a hill-hill win over Joseph & William to earn another shot at Dennis & Randell in the finals.

Dennis & Randell looked to be running away with the match at 7-2, but then watched Emmitt & Laura win four straight games to tie the match at hill-hill again. Unfortunately for Emmitt & Laura, this match went the same as the hot-seat with Dennis & Randell scoring the hill-hill win.

William “Wizzard” Daniel & Rich Calvery scored a hill-hill win over Eric Caulkins & Jacob Sanchez for the hot-seat at Kitty’s 12 & Under Scotch Doubles event on February 21st, but neither team would find the final winners circle at the end of the day.

William Weiss & Paul Santori lost to Eric & Jacob in the final four of the win-ners side, but that would be their only loss as they defeated Eric & Jacob 7-3 in the semi final match and then defeated Wizzard & Rich 7-2 and 7-3 in the double elimination finals.

Team Bishop at Stingers

Evans & Justine Bishop don’t get out to play many scotch doubles tourna-ments together. The field of teams at Stinger’s 15 & Under event on February 21st found out how hard it is to beat the Bishop’s when they do get out to play though.

Evans & Justine came out ahead of the field of 28 teams and took the hot-seat with a hill-hill (8-4) win over Juan Silva & Phillip Salas.

The one loss side was owned by Tucson’s Aaron Purdy & John Schramm as they came back from a second round loss to win six matches in a row. Aaron & John would finish in third after losing to Juan & Phillip 5-4 in the semi-final match.

After the long wait for the finals, Evans & Justine wasted no time in taking a quick 7-0 lead over Juan & Phillip. Juan & Phillip would manage to win one game, but dropped the match 8-1 and settled for second place.

McGee and Balancad Split

Brian McGee made the most of his new “7” rating by plowing through a field of thirty players and splitting first place at Stinger’s 8s and under 9-Ball event on February 28th.

McGee rode the winners side and capped things off with a dominating 7-2 win over Burt Balancad for the hot-seat.

Balancad went to the left side of the board where he scored his second win of the day over Hopell Ampongan, to send Hopell to the seats in third place.

The double elimination finals saw Balancad score an 8-1 win over McGee in the first set and both players agreed on a split of first and second place instead of playing out the second set.

Foos PulseFoosball News

By Jim King

Greetings once again Foosers of Phoenix! Last month I proclaimed that Arizona Foosball activity was reaching a deafening crescendo as the 2014/2015 Arizona Foosball Fall/Winter League and the inaugural season of the Phoe-nix Tour were both reaching their apex. Well, I’m downright ecstatic to report that due to both the Hall of Fame Warm-up and the 2015 Hall of Fame Classic tournaments that activity is closing in on a fever pitch and it’s time to delve into the details.

League The culmination of the season was finally real-ized when both Eastern and Western confer-ence champions met at Foos Bowl XIII hosted by Stingers Sports Bar & Grill on February 21st. A funny thing happened on the way to the finals; both first place teams successfully defended their top-of-the-heap rankings. The western wild card playoffs had the fourth place Boobs & Balls easily (4-1) defeating the third place Foos Brothers. Likewise, Boobs & Balls was easily defeated (4-1) receiving their first loss of the season against second place I Felt It Go In, who ended up losing to The Steve Matthews Band in a nail-biter (3-2) overtime win. On the east side of town, fourth place Abusement Park squeaked out a win (3-2) over third place European Connection. However, second place T.G.A won a seesaw battle (3-1) over Abusement Park only to get defeated in another OT nail-biter (3-2) by first place That’s What She Said. The championship match had The Steve Matthews Band winning the coin toss to receive ‘home field’ advantage. The home team did win the first round of Doubles but ended up tying on points, which could, and did, prove to be detrimental. That’s What She Said came back to take the second round of 1 on 1 Battle and, more importantly, pick-ing up 12 points. The next round, Rollerball, was a tie with both teams picking up 12 points respectively. Essentially, it came down to The Steve Matthews Band needing to win the Team Roto round to send the match into overtime, however that was out of reach when That’s What She Said took a decisive 7-0 win in the first game of 1 on 1 Roto, resulting in a 2-1 championship win. Congratulations to Jac-queline d’Estries, Jason Collicott, and Daniel Blech for becoming the winners of Foos Bowl XIII!

Another awesome component of every Foos Bowl is the seven individual playoff matches determining the title winners for each of the below categories. Each category/game type constitutes the games played in a typical match. Won/loss records are kept throughout the season and the winners of both conferences face off in a best of three match format to determine the true champion for each category. Due to the extremely effective handicap sys-tem that the league utilizes, it levels the play-ing field and allows beginners to have a shot at these titles. I’ve listed the player’s classifica-

tion in the below summary so everyone can see how each level of player faired.

League Stud (best winning percentage of all games played): Brian Salke (Expert - W*) defeated Jim Sherman (Expert-E*)Goalie War: Rulon Smith (Beginner - E) de-feated Holly Minnig (Amateur - W)Forward Shoot Out: Tim Friesen (Beginner - E) defeated Miles Johnson (Amateur - W)Singles: Rick Weirman (Beginner - W) de-feated Jason Collicott (Amateur - E)Doubles: Brian Salke (Expert - W) defeated Jim Sherman (Expert - E)Rollerball: Brian Salke (Expert - W) defeated Paul Lopes (Amateur - E)5 Bar War: Mike Lawrence (Expert - E) de-feated Mark Proctor (Amateur - W)*Western / Eastern

In addition to the above individual titles, Kenny Oglesby won Hired Gun, which is the best overall winning percentage of a substitute. And beginner Colton Dusenberry walked away with the Most Improved Player recognition.

And finally, there was a lot of blood, sweat, tears, and beers that went into making this season’s league very successful. So, with that in mind I’m using the following excerpt from ArizonaFoosball.com, written by coordinator Bill Nolan, since I’m not sure everyone read it online.

“Thanks to all league players, coordinators, and sponsors for helping to make the 2014 Fall/Winter League a big success.

Everyone knows the league is both a fun time and a great way to break up a long week with a little foos action and camaraderie. But the AZ Foosball League has become more than that - it has become something special. I don’t believe there is anything comparable across the nation right now, and we are getting bigger and better each season. This could not happen without each and every one of you, so thanks again!

That said, I would like to thank several people in particular for their extra efforts this season.

Nolan Gorney: Thanks to Nolan for his ongo-ing work in expanding AZ Foosball around Phoenix, including procuring one of our coolest new venues this season, the Hob Nob Sports Grill in Chandler. (This is not just a typical pitch - anyone who has hung out there knows that Yianni and his hockey buddies know how to run a sports bar and to sell a gyro!)

Rulon Smith - thanks to Rulon for taking over the management of the league statistics, and helping with coordinator duties. This has proven to be invaluable, and is sure to lead to many good things to come.”

I’m going to add a very, very special thanks to Bill for being instrumental in the league’s suc-cess. I think we all know that without ‘Billy Boy” being at the helm of our foosball ship we definitely wouldn’t have the foos-following and achievements we currently enjoy.

Phoenix TourThis inaugural event came to an end at Sting-ers Sports Bar & Grill on January 31st. As mentioned in last month’s Foos Pulse, the Phoenix Tour is an ongoing event where play-ers compete at events around the Phoenix area and are rated for overall performance during a three month stretch of tournaments. To date, there have been 81 contestants vying for two main prizes, one for the overall champion, and another for the highest placing rookie. Each earns the right to wear a championship jacket embroidered with their names and dates of the title, and the overall champion also collects a $100 bonus.

Well, I’m here to report that Bryan Hendricks walked away as numero uno as the overall champion, beating out Adrienne ‘Age’ Mc-Cormack by 14 points. However, not all was lost for Age as she ended up in the top rookie slot. Both Brian and Age are waiting for their embroidered jackets to show up. Despite the warm temperatures in Phoenix, don’t be surprised if you see these two wearing their jackets proudly in the coming months.

ETC.I mentioned in my opening the Hall of Fame Warm-up and the 2015 Hall of Fame Classic tournaments. As I sit here writing this month’s Pulse, there are several individuals readying the tables for the start of Hall of Fame Warm-up tourney taking place at Jester’s Billiard’s in Gilbert. The tourney runs three days, February 27th – March 1st. I’ll report on the results of it in April’s Foos Pulse.

Most of us ‘foosers’ realize that when you see ‘Warm-up’ as part of the tourney name you know there’s a bigger event fast approaching. Well, that event is the 2015 Hall of Fame Clas-sic being held at the Flamingo Hotel in Las Vegas March 11th – 15th. Prize money totals $60,000 and will feature a Johnny Lott High Stakes Rollerball event valued at $16,000, with first place walking away with a comfortable ten grand. There will be hundreds of players descending on Vegas in their attempt to capture ‘their’ portion of the $60K. Included in those hundreds will be a contingent of valley foosers headed north to test their skills against others from around the country. Last year’s group did very well and for fear of leaving anyone out who placed in the multiple events I will forgo attempting to list those individuals. Sorry foosers! However, please note that April’s Pulse will provide all the gory details of how Arizona faired against the rest.
