April 1st is kind of a bad day to keepa deadline for anything. Please turn inyour scholarship application before April 1, 2014.

Hey students, we know how difficultit is for schools to get federal grants to

keep the programs running and how expensive it is toget a degree in welding, as well. According to the USlabor bureau, we will be experiencing a shortage ofskilled labor in the welding industry for the next 10 years. That is pretty good news for recent graduates!

The Welding Industry has shown strong demands inseveral industry sectors for many years and is continuingto grow for many years to come. Many have decidedto follow a career in welding by enrolling in Universities,Community Colleges, and Technical Schools. Your AWSDetroit section wants to help eligible students receivescholarships.

AWS Detroit section distributed over $37,500 last

year. This remarkableachievement would nothave been possible withouta partnership between theAWS Detroit section andAWS Foundation. This year Praxair has announced tohave more funds available for AWS Detroit section todistribute. That is good news for you!

Take a moment to look at our website and review the announcement letter and online application. It never hurts to get that information in early! The due date for applications is April 1, 2014. If you receive our bulletin and know of a student who may qualify, please suggest they apply, more information can be found under awsdetroit.org. If you have friends in college or community colleges around the Detroit area, let them know to download the scholarship application and turn them in before April 1, 2014.

Q:

A:

Ask the Welding EngineerBy Donald F. Maatz, Jr.

I’m spot welding on a finished surface andappearance is important. What electrode weldface shape is the best?

To help answer this question, I have reached out to fellow AWS-DetroitSection Executive Board member Dan Wellman of OBARA CorporationUSA. Dan is their Vice President-Sales and Marketing.

“The key to welding a finished surface and not damagingit is heat distribution. Spot welding can be completed with

little or no damage to the surface. To spread the heat out over thesurface you would want a flat or radius cap tip. There are severaldifferent weld face configurations available, and the way they arecalled out can vary between the RWMA (Resistance WeldingManufacturing Alliance), ISO and the Asian (JIS is most common)standards:

Using the radius cap (F or R) gives you the best opportunity toachieve a no-marred surface. On the opposite side of your weldyou would need the appropriate configuration to meet the nuggetsize required, clearance, etc.

For the exact part number you can refer to the electrodemanufactures listed at www.aws.org/rwma/members/all.htmlthese companies are very knowledgeable in applications, sizing, materials and configurations.”

Alex Pazkowski has graciouslyagreed to be our first intervie-wee. Alex is pictured to the leftwith fiancé, Hannah.

Hello Alex, tell us a little bitabout yourself:Hi, I’m Alex Pazkowski. I am aLab Tech for the welding department at Washtenaw Com-munity College. I also work as awelding instructor, doing spe-cialized weld training for outside

companies through the workforce development departmentat the college. I like to help people learn. The best part of myjob is when someone says “Thanks” for the help. It sounds likea small thing to love most about my job, but it makes myday!

Why did you join the AWS Detroit Section?I joined the AWS Detroit Section because I like to support peo-ple that do good, and share a common interest.

What is your favorite AWS event? My favorite AWS event, by far, is the FABTECH show. Thereare so many cool things every year. It also seems to get big-

ger and bigger every year.

What other interests do you have?I love playing video games. I’ve played Xbox my whole life. It’s how my friends and I hang out most of the time. If I’m notdoing that, I love to go rock climbing. I only climb indoors, though. When I finally get more time, I’d like to go on a tripand climb outdoors. I write music, too, and no, I don’t sing, Iwrite electronic music. It’s my creative outlet. I don’t reallyshare that with people too often. But, I use it to zone out andde-stress when I have time.

Do you have a most memorable moment? My most memorable moment was, by far, winning the silvermedal at the World Skills competition. That was pretty cool.

Who are your mentors and why? There are a few people I have to credit for my mentoring inwelding. My high school instructor, Dave Jodway, gave me areally good start in welding. Glenn Kay, and Joe Young, bothof whom are responsible for training me and teaching meeverything I know. And my dad, he always taught me to staycalm. It was a pretty stressful experience doing what I did. Ididn’t notice until after (the competition) but I don’t really getupset or frustrated very easily. This is something I credit mydad for teaching me.
