“Do you have an old iPod laying around? Please donate it, along with the charger, to our KSU Campus Wide iPod Drive! These iPods will go to the Music and Memory Project, benefiting older adults suffering from the crippling effects of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. “ - Addie Van Zutphen, junior, Social Work and Gerontology. For more informa-tion about our iPod drive and to learn more about Music and Memory see page 6.

Interested in a career in aging and have a competitive side? If so, the Amazing Ca-reers in Aging Race is just for you! During this knock-off of CBS’s The Amazing Race, teams will compete in various challenges across campus in an attempt to reach the finish line first. This event offers students an opportunity to learn about exciting careers in gerontology and have a ton of fun while doing it. You’ll also be compet-ing for some great prizes and getting to know other gerontology students in the meantime! Come out and join the fun!” - Lauren Graber, senior, Public Health Nutri-tion and Gerontology. More info can be found on page 3.

“One of the most influential books I’ve read associated with the work we do at the Center on Aging was Dancing with Rose. It helped me to understand what constitutes good caregiving for persons with dementia and it was written by Lauren Kessler. She’s

our first speaker for Personhood and Dementia, our day-long conference on April 24 and I can’t wait to meet her! Our afternoon speaker is Dave Roth who is a great advo-cate for Music and Memory, a program that uses music to enrich the lives of persons

with dementia. Dave is a Broadway performer and is bound to bring us a memorial message. Music and Memory has gotten a great deal of press lately having just been

featured in the ABC nightly news. This conference will appeal to all of us who are searching for ways to better connect with loved ones suffering from cognitive loss.”

-Gayle Doll, Director. Read more on page 7.

“Have you ever met a 100-year-old tennis player? How about an 86-year-old pole vaulter? Here’s your chance. Come see this award-winning PBS documentary about older adults who triumph over the limitations of aging.” - Casey Leister, junior, Nutri-tional Sciences and Gerontology. Find more about the documentary on page 4.

“Skydiving has been on my bucket list for as long as I can remember, so when I heard Ruth had the same dream I just knew she would have to be my mentor! Taking the big leap with someone who I’ve grown close with over this semester will make it less terrifying. However, I’ve told Ruth that more likely than not she’s going to have to shove me out of that plane, which doesn’t seem to bother her. She’s fearless! Want to come see us skydive?” - Paige McMahon, sophomore, Busi-ness Administration and Gerontology. Find out additional info on page 8.

“Do you love to run? Do you love to have fun? If you answered yes to either question, I encourage you to sign up to participate in our Senior Prom 5k run on campus on

Friday, April 11, 2014 at 5:45 pm. Prom attire is required. Bring your friends and family with you!” - Julie Otto, senior, Communication Sciences and Disorders and Gerontology.

Amazing

Careers in

Aging Race

Monday, April 7, 2014 from 4-6 pm

The Amazing Careers in Aging Race is the KSU Center on Aging’s version of

the CBS show, The Amazing Race, where teams are pitted against each other to

trek around campus in search of four destinations. At each destination teams

will compete in a challenge – some physical and some mental – learning about

careers in aging along the way. Only when the challenge is complete will the

teams learn their next location. The competition will start at the Center on

Aging office and teams will earn points by being the first to arrive at the

destinations. Points will also be awarded to the challenge winner at each

location. The team with the most points at the final destination will be

declared the winner and receive the grand prize. In the event of a tie, a final

tie-breaker challenge will determine the winner. Those that sign up will be

provided further information about contest details and rules.

Sign up by: March 28 Final Teams Announced: March 31

Participate, learn about careers in aging, have fun, & win prizes.

Email Dana Hunter ([email protected]) to sign up. Any KSU student is eligible to participate.

They will be challenged to run in prom attire: GIRLS: dresses, tiaras, and corsages. GUYS: tuxes, suits, ties, or cumberbun, etc. The flashier

and tackier -- the better. Throughout the race there will be stops where runners can dance to hits – both past and present. There will of course be ample photo opportunities at each stop. The first male and female that cross the finish line will be crowned our Prom King and Queen. For our younger racers, the first little guy and gal to finish will be christened Prom Prince and Princess. This race will be open to all ages to truly make it an intergenerational event. This is an untimed event.

Do you have an old unused iPod?

Dave Roth

In preparation for our Personhood and Dementia event on April 24, 2014 from 9-3 pm at the Alumni Center, we are collecting iPods to present to one of our keynote speakers. Inspired by the documentary “Alive Inside” that follows the work of Dan Cohen and the Music and Memory Organization, Broadway musician and Kansas State University alum Dave Roth created the Broadway Alzheimer’s iPod Drive (www.daveroth.com).

The MUSIC & MEMORY℠ organization (www.musicandmemory.org) helps elders in care facilities suffering from a wide range of cognitive and physical challenges find renewed meaning and connection in their lives through the gift of personalized music. Our “KSU Campus Wide iPod Drive” will be partnering with the Broadway Alzheimer’s iPod Drive by collecting iPods for the Alzheimer’s Association.

If you have an old unused iPod, please consider donating it to make a difference in the life of an elder. All you need to do is deactivate the iPod, power it off, and include the cord charger. Drop off the iPod at our office, Justin Hall 253 or keep your eye out for our drop booths around campus throughout the month of April. Contact Dana Hunter with questions at [email protected].
