There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear; for fear has

to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not reached

perfection in love. We love because God first loved us.

1 John 4:18-19

In the 1986 movie, The Fly, actress Geena Davis’ character utters the

line: “Be afraid, be very afraid.” This line has transcended the original

movie and is used in various forms within our culture often shortened to

simply, “Be Afraid.”

This popular message of fear contradicts Jesus’ frequent admonition

to have no fear. Last December as I was preparing for Christmas Eve

worship, I was struck by the number of times I heard the message of fear

in our culture. Frankly, I’m getting tired of it! This message is

communicated in all sorts of ways:

Time is running out! Hurry in and save big before it’s too late.

The fiscal cliff is coming—look out for the next recession!

Global warming, asteroids, flu, end of the Mayan calendar…

Church membership is in decline, churches are closing

Some Christians use the fear of hell and eternal damnation to

apparently motivate people to repent and to believe that Jesus is the

savior of the world as though Jesus’ sole purpose for coming was to judge

the world.

Yet Jesus himself said, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and

destroy. I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.”

(John 10:10) And “I do not judge anyone who hears my words and does

not keep them, for I came not to judge the world, but to save the

world.” (John 12:47) Jesus has restored our relationship with God, the

source of life. Believe it and…have no fear! We gather for worship to

hear this news week in and week out else we’re led astray.

Our Lenten theme this year is, “No fear. Here.” based on the above

scripture passage from 1 John: “perfect love casts out fear.” God has most

fully revealed God’s love for creation through the life, death and

resurrection of Jesus Christ. The Easter morning good news of the empty

tomb resonates throughout history. Sin and death are destroyed! God’s

love for us is infinite and eternal, enabling us to love others. In love

there is no fear. So the next time you experience anxiety or fear remind

yourself that in Christ you are loved and then respond to your fear with

love.

Join us on Wednesday evenings during Lent to hear more about living

fear-less lives and be sure to invite a friend or two to hear the Good News

of Hope and Joy Easter Sunday Morning, March 31st. For sure that day

there will be No Fear. Here!

Living with courage and love,

Pastor Tom

Rides to Church

It has come to the attention of the Witness

Ministry that there are individuals who are

unable to attend church services because of

lack of transportation or the inability to drive.

We are looking for members that would be able

to provide transportation to and from church

services once a month. If you need a ride or are

willing to provide a ride, please contact the

church office, 694-5050, or Rhonda Brennan,

Care for Creation

March Recycling Opportunity

March has arrived! Can thoughts of spring cleaning be far behind? When cleaning out your

closets this month please set aside any athletic shoes that have come to the end of their useful and safe

life. You can bring them to church anytime during the month of March and deposit them in the

collection tub in the entry hallway. Please bring only athletic shoes (no sandals, flip flops, high heels, etc.).

Your Care for Creation team will deliver them to Nike where the components of the shoes will be ground

up for reuse. Nike Grind Rubber from the outsole will be used in track surfaces, interlocking gym floor tiling,

playground surfaces, and new Nike products. Nike Grind Foam from the midsole will be used as a cushion

for outdoor basketball and tennis courts. Nike Grind Fabric from the shoe upper will be used in the creation

of cushioning pads for facilities like indoor synthetic courts and wood courts.

If your athletic shoes are gently used and have life left in them as shoes (such as when a child outgrows

them before they wear out) please donate them to Good Will or another organization. But if it’s time for them

to be recycled for their components please drop them off at church this month. Keep them out of landfills.

Give them new life. It’s just another way you can care for creation.

Kenosha Green Congregations

Everyone interested in attending the next meeting of the Kenosha Green Congregations is invited to join

us on Sat., March 2nd, from 8:30am to10:00am. The meeting will be held at Bradford Unitarian Universalist

church located at 5810 8th Ave. in Kenosha. Please enter through the downstairs southeast door as another

group will be using the sanctuary. You will need to ring the bell and someone will be there to welcome you

in. The main speaker will be Ross Astoria who will give a presentation on the Citizens’ Climate Lobby.

Flower and Bulletin Donations

Would you like the opportunity to honor a loved one or

celebrate a loved one’s birthday or anniversary? Please

consider sponsoring a bulletin for $15 or donate flowers for the

sanctuary for $13 per bouquet. Your gifts of generosity help to

enrich our worship experience. You can sign up in the

Gathering Space and place your monetary gift in the collection

plate or leave it in the office.

Pastie Sale Results

I would like to thank all the people who made pasties,

Roberta Andersen, Sue Briese, Donna Dezoma, Phyllis Dibble,

Judy Glover, Linda Mc Kinney, Dawn Ollila, Jane Schmidt,

Mary Siebert, Audrey Steel and Margie Slavik. All of these people

made the 400 pasties that were brought. Thank you Judy and

Jim Glover, Tammy Sorenson, Audrey Steel, Diana Shidagis

and Mary Seibert for putting together Fat Tuesday when we

ate at the church. This has brought $2,000.00 into the church.

We will put $1,300 into Worship and Music and $700 into the

Soup Kitchen. Thank you all for your support. Linda Kluck

Bake Sale Results

goods at last month’s bake sale. We made $377. $220 will go to

Dear members of Trinity,

January was a tough

month for paying bills—

short in both Unified and

Mortgage.

In January we had the

large bill of $2,260.49 to

repair the broken water

pipe, but in February we

received some funds for the

repair. Thank you all for

giving.

Please try to keep up your giving for the Building Debt Reduction. We have a couple of months in

reserve, but that goes fast if we do not keep it up. Please remember now our expenses will increase a lot

with the winter heating bills. Thank you all for keep up with your Unified Giving and Debt Reduction.

Also, keep everyone in your prayers; they help!

Thanks,

Financial Stewardship

The Social Ministry and CUSH committee will

meet on the first Sunday of the month, in the

church library between services at 9:10am. The

next meeting will be on March 3rd.

Please remember CANS FOR CUSH on March 3rd.

Please drop off any bagged aluminum cans in the

back hallway of the church on the first Sunday of

each month. The recycling money will benefit CUSH.

CUSH continues important advocacy work

through their various task forces. CUSH continues

to work on the statewide initiative to use state

funding for treatment programs for non-violent

offenders instead of incarcerating these individuals.

This is the CUSH 11 X 15 Campaign.

CUSH has two buses going to Madison for the

PEOPLE OF FAITH UNITED FOR

JUSTICE day on Thursday, March

14th. This is a day-long gathering to

learn, discuss, pray and advocate together for social

justice issues of importance to all people of

Wisconsin. If you are interested in attending this

event, there may still be room on the bus. You may

contact the CUSH office at (262)564-8223 or

[email protected]. There are flyers on the

table in the hallway as you enter the Gathering

Space. Bus and lunch are provided for $35.00.

Social Ministry has the following events during

March: Cupboard Bound food ministry and the

Electronic Giving News

Since people no longer carry cash or checkbooks like they once did, Trinity is making it easier to give

offerings, donations and gifts using debit and credit cards through two exciting options.

The first option builds on the Simply Giving program offered through Vanco Services (where offerings

are given through automatic deductions from one’s checking account). With Sheri Viller’s expertise, we

are adding a ‘Give Now’ button on our website using Vanco’s secure website features. When a person

selects the ‘Give Now’ button, they will be redirected to Trinity’s giving page on Vanco’s secure website

where debit/credit card information is then provided and the transaction made.

The second option uses a card reader provided by Square, Inc. to receive offerings, and financial gifts

at worship services and ministry events using debit/credit cards. These gifts are deposited directly into

Trinity’s checking account.

These changes reflect our times. Please take a moment to explore them as they become available.

More details will follow as we ‘test out’ these new giving methods all to the Glory of God and for the sake

of God’s mission of life for the world.

Invitation To Serve: Identity

Hi, my name is Kendall Dobnikar, I am currently going to Trinity

Lutheran Church in Kenosha, Wisconsin. I recently went on a church

retreat up in Waukesha. Being new to the church I wasn't sure how it

was going to go. I hadn't been to a church since 2nd grade; I don’t even

think I picked up a Bible. But, my good friend Katie welcomed me to

one of the church services, and I've been going back ever since. When

Katie mentioned the retreat, I was eager to attend. It was inspiring

listening to everyone’s stories and how it impacted their lives.

On the second day we were there, each church went their separate ways and did some

community service. Our job was to go visit a lady’s home. It was so fascinating learning about

her life, and it made me realize that not everybody’s life is as easy as it seems.

One of the nights we were there, they had a big piece of paper shaped as the cross and in

sections we would put up one word that described ourselves. Looking at the paper, reading

everyone’s words, it made me think of how people are totally different on the inside then they

appear to be on the outside.

Once again, choosing to attend the retreat with Katie completely changed the way I look at

things today. I made so many friends and really felt like I belonged. It was like we were one

big family. I am going to continue going to Trinity Lutheran Church for a long as I can. It’s a

blessing to be a part of these services.

Who are you? No, not your name. Who are YOU? Recently, four girls from our youth here at

Trinity went on a retreat all about our identity in Christ. They learned about how, with God’s

help, you can be anything. They visited a woman at the Waukesha catholic Workers house. At

this house, they bring in many refugees. She taught us to never give up on something you

believe in. The girls were asked to write the thing they disliked most about themselves, and

pin it to the cross. At the end of the retreat, all of the insecurities were ripped up. Symbolizing

that we don’t have to feel like we don’t fit in because God made us perfectly in his eyes. Rachel

Kurtz and Elijah Renju performed for the crowd and have great sermons. All in all, the whole

weekend was a very fun and life changing event for all those who attended. And by the end of

the retreat, everyone knew who they were, and whose they were.
