If you did not attend the General Membership Meeting on Feb. 16, you missed an opportunity to get a good picture of what will be taking place throughout the year. Some brief highlights were:

The kitchen renovation is complete and the first day of service for the new kitchen was on Valentine’s Day. The kitchen’s staff seems very happy to be in their new home and out of the smaller banquet kitchen. Although the banquet kitchen was small, they still managed to provide some 2,885 meals while maintaining great quality. Let our executive chef, Artie, know how much you appreciate their efforts the next time you see him.

Financially, 2011 was a challenging year but we did manage to generate a small profit as much of our expenses were for one time maintenance and repair projects to put our facilities in good condition. This year we expect once again to have a very similar budget to last year’s results. Your Board of Directors and I have been going over club finances and budgets extensively looking for any reduction of expenses that make sense. We knew going into this year that 2012 would be a very tight year as we pay down the remaining balance of the Ivan loan. Most of the benefits of the loan payoff will not flow to operations until very late in the year.

Dave Hoffman’s article on pg. 13 regarding the General Wilson really brings to mind the great heritage of PYC. We point with pride that we have been a club since 1908, but understanding our club’s history puts meaning behind over 100 years of being a yacht club. I urge you to take some time and browse through the PYC Heritage Room and soak up some of our club’s history.

Please mark the following important dates on your calendar. March 2nd we will have a “Kick Off Party” for the Regata Al Sol with a Mexican Buffet. Come join the festivities and learn more about this unique regatta. The following evening on March 3rd, will be the PYC Country Western Round-up with RavenHawk—if you missed the Louisiana Saturday night party, you don’t want to miss the Round-up for a good time. Coming up on the first of April is the Blessing of the Fleet, which is always a great day at PYC. Look for more announcements of activities for this day as the date approaches.

Each year the Florida Council of Yacht Clubs honors two “Yachtsmen of the Year” for the west coast. This year for the first time ever, one yacht club (PYC), will receive both awards. This is quite an achievement considering there are 36 yacht clubs in the FCYC and 18,000 members. Bob and Vicki Riggs and John and Mary McGill will be presented with the awards during the March FCYC meeting at the Sarasota Yacht Club. Our congratulations go to both couples. Thanks for bringing this level of recognition to our PYC cruisers!

I am pleased to announce that the kitchen renovation was completed on schedule. Our new kitchen is now fully operational. The dust is still settling on the budget, but we are projecting that the final outcome will be very close to what we anticipated. Not only do we have our regular

kitchen with new appliances, but the original ones are being used in the satellite kitchen for added utility when needed. I’d like to thank Commodore Jere Allen, Fleet Captain John Buziak, Walt Smith, and Club manager, Jim Warwick for managing the project. I’d also like to thank Chef Artie, and the whole staff for their expert flexibility in maintaining kitchen services under very cramped working conditions from the satellite kitchen. The transition from one kitchen to the other was seamless, and what a joy it was to eat off a REAL plate during the Valentine’s Dinner. Approximately 2,885 dinners were served on paper plates without sacrificing quality. That is a real testament to the dedication of our very talented staff. If you would like the opportunity to see the kitchen improvements in person, please contact Mr. Warwick. See photos to the right.

Junior parents, Kirby and Kathy Smith could be seen wielding paintbrushes and rollers on a recent weekend. They were adding to the improvements of the Junior Clubhouse to make it a really special place for our youngest sailors to gather. The new paint coupled with the other building upgrades make the facility look great. Many thanks to Kirby and Cathy for their volunteer efforts!

For those of you that hold a ham radio license, you will

recognize this as a call sign. Most Members probably did not know that W4PYC is our Club’s ham radio call sign. We also have our own “radio shack” next to the Heritage Room. PYC’s Ham Radio Club meets in the Heritage Room on the fourth Tuesday of every month at 6:00 PM. All members interested in radio are invited to attend whether they are licensed hams or not.

W4PYC has been invited to assist the Race Committee in the Regata al Sol this May. Details are to follow, but our Ham Radio Club will need some manpower from our ham licensed Members. We look forward to seeing you at the meeting!

nights have been moved to Friday. As we all know, PYC is a hopping place on Friday nights! The first of these will occur on March 2nd and the next will be on March 30. They are scheduled on the last Friday possible for applications to be considered for the next Board meeting. The agenda is for members to bring prospects to the club for a meet and greet prior to a Friday night dinner. We will meet in the Lighthouse Room upstairs between 1800 and 1900 with plenty time to enjoy the Friday night cuisine and collegiality. But remember, you do not have to wait for a prospective member night to bring a friend to the club!

We all have a vested interest in maintaining membership levels. Think of who you know that might enjoy PYC and bring them to visit so they can see for themselves that we are the “South’s Finest Yacht Club”.

Cruising South Florida& the Okeechobee WaterwayFor the First Wednesday Program this month on March

7th, Bob And Vicki Riggs and John and Mary McGill will present a PowerPoint Program on their adventures Cruising South Florida last year. The program will cover the Gulf Crossing to Florida’s West Coast and the trip to Fort Myers where the West to East crossing of the Okeechobee Waterway begins. Locking through the five waterway locks and crossing the lake will be discussed. Arriving at the waterway’s Eastern port of Stuart Florida, the discussion will continue with a description of the voyage from Lake Worth through Fort Lauderdale and Miami and a Hawk Channel transit to Key West. The presentation will conclude with a narrative about the open water South West Gulf crossing to the beautiful city of Naples and back to San Carlos Bay at Fort Myers to complete the trip.

Have you ever thought of PYC as an incubator for emerging One Design Racing Classes? Many people around the country are starting to see us this way. The first edition of the Intergalactic

Keel Boat Round-up included boats from as far away as Canada and Virginia, sailing in Trip 26s. This is one of the rare opportunities this class has had to assemble in recent years, and they made the best of it. Over seven races in two days the winning boat had four 1st place finishes. “TrippNautic”, also had a fourth and a fifth, a testament to how tightly these boats were packed at the finish. To prove local knowledge was not king, “Slapshop,” from Port Stanley Sailing Squadron (Ontario), posted a 1st and 4 deuces to place second overall. “Rogue Tripp”, helmed by David Eames came over from the Beach to place 3rd and uphold the honor of the bay.

Sharing the course with the Tripps were Melges 24s and the hot new VXOnes. In the case of the VXs, this was the 1st organized event the class has sailed in. While we only had a three boat class, with just 20 plus boats in existence, this was a good turnout. The fast pace gave them plenty of opportunity to shake out some bugs and learned the intricacy of their new boats. Another new boat on the water was the Prochaska’s new Melges 24, “Vespers”. Two Melges over from Fairhope made this another fun and competitive fleet.

If you are reading this at the bar you make look up and see the now familiar site of the Flying Tiger crews. They are back for their East Coast Championship March 2-4. We will be sailing Maxine 1 in conjunction with the ECC on Saturday the 3rd. Keeping with the theme of growing One Design Classes the U20s will be in town May 17-20 for their North American Championships. Registrations on for this event are on track for break 20 boats, a milestone of some importance for the class. Once again we are attracting sailors from all over the country east of the Rockies.

Our new Sailing Director, Scott Tillema is aboard. Scott is an admitted lake sailor, but he did not lose any time getting wet with Hunter on “Rodent” for the Beach’s Valentines Day Regatta. We are looking forward to a long and rewarding tenure for Scott in his new position.

Closer to home, the annual Blessing of the Fleet will occur April 1st. Hope to see you all out in your boats for this one!

The junior clubhouse renovation is moving ahead. To date, the clubhouse has been prepped to paint and the benches have been removed to be refurbished. Paint has been purchased and application

is planned to begin on Wednesday February 15. The painting should be complete at the time of this publication. Next the flooring will be ordered and installed. Additionally, other installations and repairs are targeted to be complete by the end of the month and the facility will be usable while some final touches are being made.

Despite it being winter and the temperatures actually feeling like it...PYC Juniors are sailing!

The PYC and FYC Red, White and Blue Optimist sailors (Phillip Dobbins, Dominic Leccese, Margaret Ollinger, Gorham Partington, Mitch Powell, and Kirby Smith V) have been training for the Gulf Coast Championships at FYC with great coaching by Ellis Ollinger and Bruce Partington.

Sunday Junior Sailing has been happening on Sundays starting at 1:30PM conditions dependent and there have been some where Dominic Johnson has led the juniors in conditioning and rigging drills on land

and/or Bruce Partington provided racing strategy chalk talks.

Opti Green Fleet practice has been attended by Jonathon Bradley, Ian Ford and Evan Smith. Jonathan has also been working with Dominic Johnson on moving up into a Lasers and Evan Smith sailed an Opti around Robertson Island this past Friday under parental direction.

The Laser sailors (Dodge Rees, A. J. Pereira, Harrison Prochaska, and Derek Riddle) have been out too having some racing clinics with coach Al Ravelo. Caroline Johnson and Michael Rice have been out sailing 420s with Bert Rice Jr. coaching.

The new PYC Sailing Director Scott Tillema is making himself at home. Take the opportunity to seek out Scott and welcome him to the PYC/PYC Jr. He is already getting acclimated and the timing is great to work together for a wonderful year including sailing camp!

It has been a great start joining the wonderful Pensacola Yacht Club family. I am getting to know people already and enjoying their warm hearted welcome. I look forward to getting to know more people this spring.

I have been racing for over 25 years and am still enjoying the sport. It is a big transition for me to be in the Gulf as I have never raced in salt water before racing only on lakes, including the central Florida lakes. My first true taste of salt-water sailing came in the Valentine Regatta. I grew up on a small lake in Lake Lotawana, Missouri just east of Kansas City. I have been primarily a ‘scow’ sailor, coming from the Inland Lake Sailing Association (I.LY.A). For those not familiar with a ‘scow’, the difference is that it is a flat bottom boat with ‘lee boards’, not a centerboard. Melges Boatworks, of the Melges 20, 24 & 32 boats is the sailboat manufacturer.

As the new Sailing Director, I am looking forward to the exciting 2012 sailing season here at PYC. A few of the big regattas PYC is hosting will be the Flying Tigers Eastern Coast Championship, the U20 Nationals and the Jr. Olympic Festival. It is always great to see other sailors coming to PYC to enjoy our hospitality.For the local Gulf sailing, one of my goals

for this season is increase participation. I will be onboard for the Pensacola Bay Racing and will try to post the results quickly for each series. Wednesday night sailing will be a high priority for me trying to get everybody out sailing and having good racing that will be talked about the next day. Thursday evening’s big boat ‘informal’ racing will be a good way to get new crews out onto the boat to experience the fun and to meet new people off the water.

The Junior Sailing is going to be another exciting activity for the PYC. The summer sailing programs with sailing schedule(s) should be out as you read this. If you do see a program that you want to sign up your children or grandchildren in, please don’t hesitate to do so. This will benefit the instructors in advance as to the number of boats to have ready. Another activity for the Juniors will be the Wednesday evening sailing. Wednesday sailing will be a great opportunity for the kids and parents to go out racing together. PYC will have a lot to offer this season and with these programs it will be interesting to see who will be the next sailing champion coming out of the PYC.

For many years the Hospitality Com-mittee has worked hard to raise money for the renovation of the PYC kitchen. To date the Committee has raised over $22,000 from Friday night split ticket sales and the Ladies Luncheon and Fashion Show

ticket sales. This effort has provided monies to replace worn out kitchen equipment prior to the major renovation that was just completed. Since the renovation the Committee has purchased tables and additional equipment for the kitchen. Our Committee will continue to raise money to support this fund providing for the unexpected needs of our kitchen. We appreciate your support of this effort.

Co-Chairs EJ Jackson and Quinlyn Bray have been busy planning our Spring Fashion Show and Ladies Luncheon scheduled for Wednesday, April 25. The latest in Spring fashions from Linda Merting’s Ladies Quarter in Gulf Breeze will be modeled by PYC members. Linda will be showing a variety of wonderful styles and accessories to add to your spring, summer, and party wardrobes. She will also provide a boutique in the Commodore’s room for you to shop before and after the show. As always the social starts at 11am and the Fashion Show Luncheon at 12noon. Reserve a table and bring your girlfriends out to the Club for this fun event.

Bob Fleege is still hanging out on his boat in Key West. Pictured at the southern most point only 90 miles from Cuba the question is will he come home or sail on to Cuba???

Recently Scott and Julie Harrell and their girls flew from Costa Rica to Orlando to visit Mickey Mouse. From their photo it looks like they all had a grand time in the Magic Kingdom. Apparently they are now embarking on new adventures in Central America but they don’t plan to miss the Regatta Al Sol and party in Isla Mujeres.

Cruisers Larry and Ann-Marie Bowyer are back on their boat having adventures daily with ATMs and panic attacks over whether their credit card is going to work. Larry has taken to styling women’s hair to make extra money!!! The picture at the right is evidence.

Closer to home on Pensacola Bay Bernie and Barbara Knight enjoyed a day on their sailboat, Avalon. In the photo notice who has the wheel. Also Jeff and Ellen Hunt were out enjoying a sail on the bay in the unusually warm winter weather.

The Annual Miami Boat Show is always a big attraction for many of our PYC members. Ron Bray, Julie Denton, Kristin and Cliff Roberts made the road trip from Pensacola to Miami to enjoy the show last month. They had little sleep and a great time.

We all wish Dan Owczarczak, Mary Stitt, and Bob Lee a speedy recovery from recent knee surgery and Libba Dennis a quick mend of her broken wrist. We look forward to seeing them all back at the Club very soon. Earlier this month we were happy to see Ned Mayo out and about after having just recovered kidney surgery.

since the New Year’s Day brunch but that does not mean that all our boats have been tied to the dock. There have been several impromptu

weekends on the hook and the day sailing has been great!

We had great participation in the planning meeting and everyone is ready for an exciting boating season. This year each raft-up will be hosted by a different person. Many thanks to all our volunteer hosts. We will venture to some new places as well as our favorite anchorages. Our long distance cruise this year is planned for the Labor Day weekend when we will head west to Panama City. We will visit Panama City Yacht Club and Bay Point Marina during our stay. More about that trip later in the year. As I write this, everyone is looking forward to a weekend at Lulu’s, hosted by Johnny and Ruth Smith. In March, Chuck & Peg Minnick are leading us to Ingram Bayou. Watch your email for details. PYC Cruisers take a fun and impromptutrip to Orange Beach

A detachment of nine vessels from PYC’s cruising fleet enjoyed a fantastic late January sojourn to Orange Beach Marina. Located in Terry Cove and just off Perdido Pass, the beautiful facility evokes a Bahamian charm which caused those berthed there to forget they were only twenty short miles from Pensacola.

The assembled crew enjoyed happy hour Friday evening aboard Bob and Vicki Riggs’ trawler “Si Como No” and later walked to Calypso’s Restaurant for a dinner of coconut crusted shrimp and other seafood delicacies.

Saturday’s gorgeous weather afforded opportunities for dingy rides, walking, biking or just relaxing. The evening’s dock party coordinated by John and Mary McGill offered an array of culinary delights and was enjoyed by all hands.

This informal voyage once again demonstrated how fortunate we are to be able to enjoy the splendid cruising grounds of the upper gulf coast and the camaraderie of great PYC friends!

Commodore Allen has requested I write some more articles on club history, so here goes! Most members know that PYC used a retired WWI transport ship moored in Bayou Chico as its clubhouse from 1922 to 1932. Photos of the ship can be seen in the Heritage

Room and in local business around town. However, research by former PYC member Cynthia Green Dean has brought to light a couple of new items of interest.

First, a 1922 article from the St. Petersburg Times explains PYC purchased the General Wilson for use as a clubhouse that could be moved from place to place. The club leadership expressed the idea that they could take their members and their clubhouse to Mobile or Biloxi for the Lipton Cup races each year! Think of a raft-up or cruise where the kitchen, bar, dining room and entire staff comes along! However, that probably never happened because the ship was too expensive to operate even for a U.S. Navy budget.

Second, as the first photo to the right shows, the ship/clubhouse did make at least one voyage. The hurricane of 1926 was so strong it blew the ship off its moorings and then up the bayou until it lodged against the train trestle. In the 2nd photo you can see that the large PYC sign is bent and damaged, but still visible. I imagine the short return down the bayou to its pier across from our current clubhouse was its final cruise until the entire ship was destroyed by fire in 1932.
