President’s Message – Ray Shute

I hope everyone is looking forward to Spring and the warmer weather that should be arriving shortly. I

personally have had enough of Old Man Winter for this year.

If you missed the Annual Section Educational Foundation / Suppliers Night on February 22, you really

missed a Great Event. We had an excellent turn out, lots of exhibitors and attendees, an enjoyable dinner and a

presentation by our incoming President-Elect, Russell Broom. To those of you that did attend, I want to offer my

sincere thanks for your support as this event helps to fund scholarships for students who are our future members

of SPE.

On March 23rd

(note the new date), we are planning on a technical meeting and dinner, Plastic Part Design

with Ansys and Moldex 3D, presented by Rick Fischer. For April 13th

, we have lined up companies that supply to

and provide products and services for an Injection Molding roundtable discussion. Watch for an announcement

and check the Section’s website for further information and details to attend this exciting event. On May 11th

, we

will host our Awards Night where we will be honoring our past presidents and those hard working individuals that

keep your Section running. We are hoping to have a political speaker for that evening’s event. Of course, in June

we will be back on the course for our Annual Golf Outing, which will again be held at White Pines Golf Club during

June. Check our out website for further details about these meetings.

Unfortunately, I have some bad news to share with you, 2 of our Past Presidents and long time members

of the Section have passed away and I wanted you to be aware of their passing and ask for your prayers and

condolences for their families in this time of sorrow.

Joseph F. Valenta, passed away on December 31 and condolences can be sent to his son, James Valenta

who can be reached at [email protected]. Jack E. Glatt, Past President and another long time section

member passed away, March 4. Services will be held on April 17 at Davenport Funeral Home in Barrington, IL.

Further details may be found in this newsletter.

We can always use a little help with running the Section, so if you have a little time each month that you

could volunteer to a great cause, please contact me or any of the other board members. Please read the monthly

newsletters, check the website, and attend the meetings so we can grow the Section and make it meaningful to

you, our members.

Our next board of directors meeting will be held right before the technical meeting on Tuesday, March

23rd

and you are always welcome to join us and participate in the planning for upcoming events. Future board of

directors meetings will move to the 2nd

Tuesday of the month, immediately preceding our Section Meeting. Give us

a call or check out the website http://www.4spe.org/technical-groups/sections/chicago.

Looking forward to seeing you on the 23rd of March at the Holiday Inn –Elk Grove Village for our

Technical Seminar - Plastic Part Design with Ansys and Moldex 3D.

March Event

Do not miss the SPECS March dinner meeting with keynote speaker Rick Fischer discussing the

benefits of FEA and Mold Flow analysis. See page 5 in this newsletter for more information.

Thinking Summer

We had a great turnout for last fall’s golf outing and the feedback was good as well. That

doesn’t mean it can’t get better! Please send any and all suggestions my way and we’ll make

this year’s (June) outing the best we’ve had in years.

Plastic Part Design with Ansys and Moldex3D,

with Rick Fischer

March 23, 2010 at 6:00 p.m.

Cost: $25 Members, $30 Nonmembers

Location: Holiday Inn Elk Grove

Description: The design of plastic parts can benefit from the early use of structural finite element analysis (FEA). This software can be used to determine stresses caused by service loads so that the part can be designed to sustain those loads and perform as expected. Similarly, early use of mold-filling simulation can help ensure moldability and a robust process. When the two are used together, their combined results can produce additional benefits. This presentation demonstrates this effect when the Ansys FEA program and the Moldex3D eDesign mold-filling simulation program are used in the design of some features often found in plastic parts.

Speaker: Rick Fischer is a mechanical engineering professional with over 20 years’ experience in plastic part design, structural FEA, and mold-filling simulation. He holds a BSME from the Illinois Institute of Technology, and a certificate in Plastics Engineering Fundamentals from UMass.
